Change in Payment and Scheduling Policy

This semester, students who do not submit some form of payment will no longer automatically have their class schedules dropped due to non-payment.

Any student that wants to withdraw from autumn semester classes must complete the withdraw process by Sunday, August 24, 2014 to receive a 100 percent refund. Tuesday, September 9, 2014 is the last day to withdraw at an 85 percent refund. Anyone withdrawing after September 9 will owe the full amount of any charges due.

By the first day of class, each student must sign and submit a Hocking College Registration Terms and Promissory Note (link) and establish a method of payment. You can download the Registration Terms and Promissory Note and submit the form to the Cashier's Office in the Student Services Concourse. Please note that the Hocking College Registration Terms and Promissory Note is different than the Master Promissory Note required to receive federal student loans.

If you have not established a method of payment for the 2014 autumn semester, please contact the Cashier's Office in person or at cashiers@hocking.edu indicating your planned method of payment.

Smart Start 2014

Smart Start 2014

Thanks to everyone who participated. Remember you can come back next year as a peer mentor. We hope you had the time of your life!
Tips For Starting College
  1. Go to class. Students who succeed show up!
  2. Find out how you learn. Some students take notes, some students record lectures. Others work best by studying in a group or with a buddy. Many students find that breaking up their studying into small chunks helps them learn. Find out what works for you!
  3. Get a planner. Get a book or use an on-line calendar to schedule your class times, appointments, due dates for homework and papers. Schedule time to work, study and play.
  4. Get involved, get active and eat right! Join a club, get involved in sports, climb, go to Student Government, check out TLC or see if the Access Center is right for you. Students who get involved have friends and support groups to help them get through college! Make working out a part of your routine. Avoid fast fast food and include fruit and vegetables with every meal to help your body and mind.
  5. Get help early. If you are having problems in a class, talk to the instructor about your options. See if tutoring is available or perhaps a student who is doing well in the class can help you out.
  6. Make a budget and stick to it. Plan out your weekly income and anticipated expenses. Do all you can to stick to your budget.
  7. Avoid using credit cards if you possibly can. Some students have run up huge bills on credit cards which have forced them to drop out of school.
  8. Drugs and alcohol:  Make sensible choices and do the right thing. Too many students have their college careers cut short because of the decisions they make in these areas.
  9. Do you have issues that need to be addressed? Are you lonely, depressed, dealing with anxiety or going through a hard time? Make an appointment with our counselors in Oakley 204. Take care of small problems before they become big problems.
  10. Stay in college whatever it takes! You will have a more rewarding career and a better life with a college degree. Make the commitment now that you are going to graduate from Hocking College.

Nelsonville Roundabout Project Complete
Hocking College Landscape Management students and Campus Greens staff recently partnered with the City of Nelsonville and Rocky Brands to beautify the roundabout near Dorr Run.

Andy Freeman, director of physical plant operations, drew up the plans for the roundabout landscaping and presente
d them to Nelsonville City Council for approval.

The Hocking College Landscape Management students and Campus Greens staff planted trees and shrubs, as well as placing large granite boulders in the area. A sign will also be installed welcoming visitors to historic Nelsonville.

"This is kind of a gateway into the city of Nelsonville," Freeman said. "It's going to be very appealing to the eye but safe as you're going around the roundabout."

Earlier this year, Hocking College landscape students also helped with the landscaping at the double roundabout in Logan.

Hocking Students Place Third in Global Dialogues Contest
Five students at Hocking College placed third in the national 2014 Global Dialogues contest. The team of five talented students consisted of Victoria Moyer of New Lexington, Lakota Boetcher of Rockbridge, Courtney Carsey of Albany, Jeff Barnes of Circleville and Clarence David Harris of Glouster.

Global Dialogues is an organization that strives to encourage creative young people to cultivate empathy, compassion and unity through the power of media. The organization hosts yearly contests to empower young people across the world to speak out about serious taboo topics such as child abuse and sexuality. The contest gives participants creative freedom to write fiction or non-fiction, create a video, play, poem or short story; but all creations must be related to a given subject.

The team created a narrative called, "The Story of Ronnie," for a college psychology course. The story was about Ronnie's transgender life journey. The students divided the work, each concentrating on a segment of Ronnie's life to focus on the challenges and supports that Ronnie would face as she matured. The students mixed their segments together to finalize the story, ending with Ronnie's wedding and eventually finding true happiness.

Hocking College student Ndeye Penda Leye of Senegal, was also selected as one of the 20 international winners of the contest. Penda wrote the heart wrenching, fictional account of the circumcision of a five-year-old girl. This was Penda's second year placing in the top 20 of the Global Dialogues contest.
