Hocking Alum Serves Lunch at Local Athens Restaurant
Hocking College graduate, Josh Hinty is recognized as the lunch chef for 9 Tables on North Shafer Street in Athens. He received a culinary arts degree in 2013, but has worked his way up in the dining industry for 20 years.
He was recently featured on the Athens Messenger where he was interviewed about his new position at 9 Tables Express. He mentioned that the training he received at Hocking College helped him learn what he hadn't been able to learn elsewhere. "There are teachers there that have forgotten more than I know," Hinty said.
His mom was a waitress at a restaurant in Chillicothe when he was younger and he always helped her out. "I probably wouldn't have the passion that I do without my mom," Hinty said.
9 Tables was a reservation-only restaurant, which only served multiple-course dinners. Hinty's wife, Courtney previously spoke with the owner, Bill Justice to get the family a spot on the menu. After Justice spoke with Courtney and observed Josh's work, the restaurant offered the Hinty family a spot to serve lunch. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and is known as 9 Tables Express.
Courtney is in charge of the business aspects and Hinty has a small lunch menu including a variety of dishes. The menu ranges from mussels in white wine, to pulled pork and hamburgers and a signature sherry-soaked trifle for dessert.

Hocking Alum Takes On Executive Chef
Athens native Jared Bennett is reaching forward this year with his newly announced promotion to executive chef at a Cincinnati local restaurant, Metropole.
Bennett is a graduate of Hocking College with a degree in Restaurant Management that led him to become a line cook at Daveed's, Nectar and Orchids, where he continued employment until Metropole opened. After holding the sous-chef position at Metropole, Bennett has announced his promotion to chef de cuisine this year.
Metropole is located in Cincinnati's new 21c Museum Hotel and offers a new twist on traditional fire cooked meals and techniques. The menu focuses on dishes cooked in a traditional custom built wood-burning fireplace. Bennett expresses his excitement for the new position but explains the style of the restaurant will stay the same.
"Metropole is about letting food speak for itself and that will not change," said Bennett.
Some dishes that Bennett has contributed to this unique menu include a potato gnocchi with guanciale, escarole, oyster mushrooms & feta and a chilled corn soup containing charred corn, green onions and summer sausage.

Students Place Third in Global Dialogues Contest
Five students at Hocking College placed third in the national 2014 Global Dialogues contest. The team of five talented students consisted of Victoria Moyer of New Lexington, Lakota Boetcher of Rockbridge, Courtney Carsey of Albany, Jeff Barnes of Circleville and Clarence Dave Harris of Glouster.
Global Dialogues is an organization that strives to encourage creative young people to cultivate empathy, compassion and unity through the power of media. The organization hosts yearly contests to empower young people across the world to speak out about serious taboo topics such as child abuse and sexuality. The contest gives participants creative freedom to write fiction or non-fiction, create a video, play, poem or short story; but all creations must be related to a given subject.
The team created a narrative called, "The Story of Ronnie," for a college psychology course. The story was about Ronnie's transgender life journey. The students divided the work, each concentrating on a segment of Ronnie's life to focus on the challenges and supports that Ronnie would face as she matured. The students mixed their segments together to finalize the story, ending with Ronnie's wedding and eventually finding true happiness.
Hocking College student Ndeye Penda Leye of Senegal, was also selected as one of the 20 international winners of the contest. Penda wrote the heart wrenching, fictional account of the circumcision of a five-year-old girl. This was Penda's second year placing in the top 20 of the Global Dialogues contest.

Hocking College Partners with Nelsonville and Rocky Brands to Beautify Roundabout
Hocking College Landscape Management students and Campus Greens staff recently partnered with the City of Nelsonville and Rocky Brands to beautify the roundabout near Dorr Run.
Andy Freeman, director of physical plant operations, drew up the plans for the roundabout landscaping and presented them to Nelsonville City Council for approval.
The Hocking College Landscape Management students and Campus Greens staff planted trees and shrubs, as well as placing large granite boulders in the area. A sign will also be installed welcoming visitors to historic Nelsonville.
"This is kind of a gateway into the city of Nelsonville," Freeman said. "It's going to be very appealing to the eye but safe as you're going around the roundabout."

Hocking College Offers Physical Defense Classes for Women
The Hocking College Police Department (HCPD) will offer free Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) Systems classes for women this September.
Each class will be three days long and will run from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. each evening. The class schedule is as follows:
- Class One: September 2, September 3 and September 4
- Class Two: September 8, September 9 and September 10
- Class Three: September 16, September 17 and September 18
- Class Four: September 22, September 23 and September 24
The primary focus of the system is designed for women to become aware of self-defense options during situations of possible or actual assaults. According to R.A.D. Systems, the crime of rape is reported so infrequently that society in general has become unaware of such incidents. Until it happens to 'them' or someone 'they' know and love, its just another headline, just another crime that happens to someone else. In order to overcome this common view, R.A.D. Systems' purpose is to empower women through key elements of self-defense; educate women on the topic, encourage self-dependence and teach the importance of decision-making and understanding physical power.
Hocking College Chief of Police Al Matthews has worked with the HCPD to invest in training its personnel in the instruction of R.A.D. physical defense principles and is excited to offer basic self-defense classes for the women of the community. "We're looking forward to offering several classes each semester, each year. Looking to the future, we plan to offer the women of our community more advanced R.A.D. classes to continue their education and fine tune their skills," Chief Matthews said.
The nine-hour class sessions will teach participants important sexual assault definitions, risk reduction strategies, date rape information, weapon safety, defensive movements and motions, and other self-defense knowledge to prevent future harm. This is a course of carefully selected defensive tactics with helpful guidelines for continued personal growth.
There is no registration fee, but class sizes are limited. Email Angela Perrigio or call 740.753.6598 for registration or more information about the classes.
