ETextbook Initiative Update
The eTextbook initiative will continue to expand this academic year. Students will be offered additional classes with print textbook, eTextbook and application options through our online bookstore. Preparing  students for a digital workplace and reducing costs for students remain the primary long term goals. A few changes will be implemented that will hopefully result in a more effective autumn term.

The most significant change is in the student purchasing model. Course fees will no longer be used to automatically purchase learning resources for specific classes.

Students will have a choice of learning resources to purchase through the online bookstore, just as they do at the regular Hocking College Bookstore. Students will notice resources defined as either "ground bookstore," "online bookstore" or "no text" listed in their class Moodle site. Employees at ED MAP and Hocking College have partnered to make the experience simple and easy by integrating Moodle into the process. All students need to log into Moodle and then their individual classes to see the established book and eTextbook options available to them.

Students will also see used and rental book options through the online bookstore. These are new to the project, but as stated before, they are student choices.

Looking forward, the implementation team is trying to create a fast and convenient way for students to use their financial aid at the online bookstore. Currently, students enrolled in classes using learning resources available through the online bookstore will see a link in Moodle allowing them to request a financial aid voucher to use towards their learning resources. If the learning resources are available through the regular Hocking College Bookstore, students will be able to use their financial aid directly in the Bookstore as previously offered.

The Hocking College Bookstore staff is the primary point of contact for any questions and/or service needs. Please encourage students to stop by DVD 224 or call 740.753.6188 for assistance.

College to Help Beautify Nelsonville Roundabout
Hocking College will play a role in beautifying another local roundabout, partnering with the City of Nelsonville and Rocky Brands to beautify the roundabout near Dorr Run.

Andy Freeman, director of physical plant operations, detailed some of the plans at a Nelsonville City Council meeting. During the meeting, Council granted a revocable license for a possible sign and landscaping to be installed inside and around the roundabout.

According to Freeman, the plan is to plant trees and shrubs and to place large granite boulders in the area. There is also the possibility that a sign will be installed welcoming visitors to historic Nelsonville.

"This is kind of a gateway into the city of Nelsonville," Freeman said. "It's going to be very appealing to the eye but safe as you're going around the roundabout."

The installation of the landscaping and boulders is expected to happen the week of Aug. 11-15, Freeman said. Hocking College grounds employees and landscape management students will be helping with the work.

According to the Athens Messenger, traffic may be rerouted during some of the work, but the details have not been finalized yet.

Earlier this year, Hocking College landscape students also helped with the landscaping at the double roundabout in Logan.

Love Blooms at Nelsonville Music Festival
Hocking College student Justin Brumley married Elizabeth Atwell after meeting at the Nelsonville Music Festival in 2009.

Brumley was a student studying nursing at Hocking College when he met Atwell, both were volunteering at the festival. Brumley and Atwell were introduced after Brumley's friend Wendy started their conversation. Atwell left for a year to study at the Republic of Georgia, but as soon as she returned, the couple met up. After spending time together getting to know each other, a relationship finally sparked.

Brumley knew he wanted to marry Atwell just a few years later. At the 2013 Nelsonville Music Festival, the couple went on a walk and Brumley proposed to Atwell. They were married on May 10, 2014 and celebrated together at this year's festival. The new couple plans to enjoy their year together as a long honeymoon, living without any responsibilities.

Wayne National Forest Announces Temporary Trail Closures for Bridge Replacements
The Wayne National Forest Athens Ranger District announces plans to start replacing 12 bridges on the Monday Creek Off-highway Vehicle (OHV) Trail System in the Dorr Run area in Hocking County. Trail riders can expect some closures with reroutes starting early August and continuing through the end of the trail riding season.

Depending on weather conditions, the first section of trail system to be closed is identified as the Bowl Trail, located between intersection 75 (Company Road/Bowl Trail) and intersection 53 (Paramount Loop North/Bowl Trail). The trail is expected to be closed Monday, August 4 to Friday, August 15, 2014.

Once completed, the second phase of the bridge replacement project will begin on the northern portion of Dorr Run Loop. The area is scheduled to be closed from intersection 42 (Door Run Loop/Timber Road Trail) to intersection 43 (Dorr Run Loop/Dorr Run Short Connector). The trail is expected to be closed Monday, August 18 to Friday, September 12, 2014.

Riders are reminded that Paramount Loop North is currently closed, and will remain closed until the bridge is replaced.

Smokey Bear Celebrates 70th Birthday
Burr Oak State Park and Wayne National Forest invite the public to celebrate Smokey Bear's 70th Birthday on Saturday, August 9, 2014 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Burr Oak State Park Beach.

"Since his "birth" on August 9, 1944, Smokey Bear has been a recognized symbol of conservation and protection of America's forests," Gary C. Chancey, Wayne National Forest public affairs officer, said. "Wayne National Forest is happy to join Burr Oak State Park in celebrating Smokey Bear's Birthday. We look forward to celebrating many more birthdays of our beloved icon."

Families will get an opportunity to get pictures with Smokey Bear and enjoy an up-close look at a fire engine, participate in children's activities, and meet some of Smokey Bear's Forest friends. They will also get a chance to learn more about wildfire prevention.

This event is being held along with many others around the nation by the U.S. Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Ad Council.

Smokey Bear's message about wildfire prevention has helped to reduce the number of acres lost annually to wildfires, from about 22 million (1944) to an average of 6.7 million annually today. However, wildfire prevention remains one of the most critical issues affecting our country. Many Americans believe that lightening starts most wildfires. In fact, 9 out of 10 wildfires nationwide are started by humans. Wildfires sparked by humans are most commonly caused by campfires left unattended, trash burning on windy days, careless discarding of smoking materials, BBQ coals, and operating equipment without spark arrestors.

"Our Wildfire Prevention campaign has helped children and adults throughout the country understand their role in preventing wildfires," Tom Tidwell, forest service chief, said. "For 70 years, Smokey Bear has empowered people to make a difference; his message of personal responsibility continues to be as critical and relevant now as ever."

Smokey Bear is the center of the longest-running public service advertising (PSA) campaign in U.S. history. Since 1944, the Ad Council, ad agency FCB West, and the U.S. Forest Service have been helping Smokey communicate his well-known message, "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires." To help reward and thank those that take steps to help prevent wildfires, Smokey is giving out bear hugs online, using #SmokeyBearHug.  He's also directing fans to his website, www.smokeybear.com, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter for more information about wildfire prevention.
