From the Provost
The Future of Moodle
We would like to provide an update on some recent conversations concerning the campus Learning Management System (LMS), Moodle. More specifically the usefulness of Moodle as our institutional LMS.
As you may recall, the move from WebCT to Moodle occurred about two years ago. Moodle was selected after a comprehensive investigation into other LMS solutions. Compounded with Blackboard ending support for WebCT and knowing that WebCT was antiquated, the college needed to secure a stable LMS solution that empowered the institutional and fostered future online growth. As with any transition we knew that there are going to be speed bumps along the journey. The college has made the best of it through faculty and staff innovation along with countless hours of hard work from many colleagues, most notably, Jesse Henestofel, Carolyn Tripp, James Rice and Todd Whited. While the LMS started as a medium for online course delivery, it has since transcended into a platform that all college courses utilize. Set as a directive by the Provost last year, and with the help of all the LMS users, expansion of Moodle services will continue to evolve.
Many rumors may be floating around campus that we are moving to a new LMS. While we continue to evaluate online course delivery methods, this rumor is not true. Our approach will be to enhance and address issues within the Moodle environment. We fully understand the massive amount of work it would take to change our LMS. Frankly, it would be a painful process. Nevertheless, we do not want to leave problems unaddressed.
We have an opportunity to migrate our Moodle LMS from its current hosted environment to our local servers. The move would provide us with a greater amount of control over the LMS and allow us to address known problems directly.
This is where we also need your help. The plan will be to survey faculty staff and students to hear comments on how our LMS services the campus community. With your comments and suggestions, we will continue to do our best to address problems. If we reach a point where we have exhausted all options to solve problems without success, then we will feel warranted to look at a new LMS. That time is not now.
For now, Moodle is our LMS and we will continue to work on improving its capabilities.

New Online Admission Application Launched
The Web Development Team, in conjunction with Marketing, Institutional Research, Admissions and the Registrar's Office, is excited to announce a new online Hocking College admissions application for U.S. applicants.
Prospective students will no longer complete any paper admissions application. They will need to simply login to apply.hocking.edu, create a user account and then complete the application. The new system will enable applicants to save their information as they complete the application, if they decide to finish and submit it at a later point. Applicants can also use this system if they are readmitting for a different term.
We hope that the new online application will streamline the process, and make it easier for applicants. Also, in an effort to alleviate additional barriers to application, application fees have now been eliminated! Thank you to everyone for your help in building this new system, and let us know if you have any suggestions for future improvements.

June 13 Proclaimed Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Athens County Commissioners will proclaim June 13, 2014, Elder Abuse Awareness Day. They will make the official proclamation on Tuesday, June 10.
The day serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations and communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect and exploitation of elders.
Athens County is home for nearly 7,000 individuals 65 years of age and older. In 2013, Adult Protective Services (APS), with frequent assistance from the Athens County Sheriff's office and the Athens City Police Department, investigated 110 reports of elder abuse, neglect, self-neglect or exploitation.
APS, which is administered by Athens County Job and Family Services, is required to investigate and evaluate all reports of suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults age 60 and older in Athens County. These adults may be handicapped due to aging, or they may have physical or mental impairments that prevent them from providing for their own care and protection.
Elder abuse is an under-reported problem that can have devastating or life-threatening consequences. It is estimated that for every reported case of elder abuse or neglect, as many as 23 cases go unreported.
What can you do to help prevent elder abuse?
- Know how to report suspected abuse or neglect. Call 740.677.4208. All referrals are confidential. There is no cost for the investigation to the client or family.
- Sign up to be a volunteer guardian. Family members aren't always available or the most appropriate people to help when a senior citizen is deemed incapable of making his or her own decisions. For more information, call 740.677.4208.
- Join in recognizing this day on June 13 by wearing purple, the official color of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
To learn more about issues related to public services and poverty, visit jfs.athensoh.org.

Student Raises Awareness of CFKudos to Hocking College paramedic student Danie Dane for her work to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis. May was Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Awareness Month, and Dane took the initiative to organize a campus-wide fundraiser to not only raise money for the cause, but to also raise awareness. Dane organized the release of 65 balloons in honor of those affected by this disease. This is the first step in her elaborate scholarship application for the AbbVie CF Scholarship. After the event, Dane received a letter from State Senator Lou Gentile thanking her for her efforts. CF is a genetic disorder that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system and currently affects an estimated 30,000 children and adults in the United States. To learn more about Danie's mission, or to help support it, please contact her at daned@hocking.edu.
