Honoring Ryan Seitz, A Fallen Firefighter

On September 24, 2010, alumni Ryan Seitz '04 was killed in the line of duty. Last year, a Dist-inguished Service Award from the Vinton County Fire Department and community was presented to Seitz's family as a way to remember his remarkable sacrifice.

Seitz was a young firefighter and had been a member of the McArthur Fire Department for just two months when he responded to a call for mutual aid at a Londonderry brush fire. More than 100 firefighters were working through hot, windy conditions when a pressurized tank exploded striking Seitz in the chest, killing him instantly.

The 26-year-old had a friendly smile, an outgoing personality and an enthusiasm for life that made him well-liked by everyone who knew him. He earned an associate's degree from Hocking College in Computer Networking.

"Ryan epitomized what it means to be part of a community. He was kind to others, he was willing to reach out and do something for another person, even if it wasn't convenient for him. He wanted to be a good neighbor and a good citizen," Brandi Betts, Vinton County Marketing Director, said.

The Vinton County community is remembering Seitz in a variety of ways. A plaque has been dedicated to him, along with a 5K run/walk to raise money for the Ryan Seitz Memorial Fund. A portion of Route 50 was also renamed in his honor.

Alumni Spotlight

Alumna Fulfills Lifelong Dream

Hocking College graduate Laura (Bauer) Lytle '02, has followed her passion and fulfilled her lifelong dream of being a travel nurse.

Lytle decided to enter the nursing field because of her best friend's mother's important role in her life. Lytle's mother passed away when she was young, so her best friend's mother encouraged her to enter the nursing field. Little did she know, this field was her life's calling.

She entered travel nursing because she loved the prospect of going to travel and see the world while doing what she loves, nursing.

"It seemed like a dream come true, and it was! I was not disappointed with anything about traveling. I got to spend my free time exploring my area, meeting new friends, experiencing the culture and soaking in California's coast," Lytle said.

Lytle remarked that Hocking College taught her the values of nursing and respect for the classroom. Her favorite thing about Hocking College was the "old-school" feel to it.

According to Lytle, "The teachers instilled the old-school traditions, such as offering your seat to a physician, and the demand for respect in the classroom. I also liked that it was small, not a large university like OU is down the street. I felt like a person, not a number."

Lytle's best experiences in the field have been travel nursing and working in critical care.

After enjoying post-grad life, Lytle is now focusing on being a mother to her one-year-old daughter and a wife to her husband.

School of Natural Resources Honored with Heart of Hocking Award

Hocking College School of Natural Resources was honored to receive the Heart of Hocking award during the 49th Annual Winter Hike, held recently at Hocking Hills State Park.

The Heart of Hocking Award is given each year to an individual or organization that expresses their passion for the Hocking Hills State Park by dedicating numerous volunteer hours to improve and maintain the area. After decades of involvement with Hocking Hills State Park, Hocking College was recently honored with this award.

"Many of the special events or projects that have been conducted here at Hocking Hills could not have been completed without their assistance and the support of the Hocking College staff and administration," the award submission noted.

The college has worked on projects from repairing steps and bridges to completing nest surveys and wildlife mapping.  Major events held at the park, such as the Maple Sugaring Festival and the Frontier Hike, were also made possible through the direct help of Hocking College students.

Kenneth Bowald, Dean of the School of Natural Resources and Kenneth Temple, Natural Resources Law Enforcement, accepted the award on behalf of the school at Cedar Falls, the halfway point of the six mile hike from Old Man's Cave to Ash Cave.

Bowald, with great appreciation for this honor, said "Hocking College is fortunate to have one of Ohio's premiere state parks right in our backyard.  Not only does it provide great opportunities for our Natural Resources students, but many of the staff are Hocking College graduates.  We share not only a name, but a tradition of conservation, education, and recreation. This award is a great honor!"

Hocking Adjunct Faculty Publishes New Collection of Poetry

"God's Will," the latest collection of poetry by Hocking College adjunct English faculty Scott Urban, has been published as part of a new line Mad Rush Books.  Far from a religious polemic, the collection features cutting-edge verse that examines loss, death, faith and, more rarely, redemption.

Urban said, "Inspiration from my poems comes from a variety of sources - stories that friends tell me, items I read in the news and personal experiences. My imagination is caught by individuals in extreme situations, because I feel you get a glimpse of another's soul when you see how he or she reacts to the unexpected." The centerpiece of this collection is the multi-section title poem, which memorializes the victims of the 2006 West Virginia Sago mine disaster.

"When I first read about what those miners endured - and their heroism in the face of soul-crushing horror - I knew right away I had to deal with it through my writing," Urban said.  "Both the best and the worst of humanity can be seen in this tragedy - fear, greed, hope, bravery and sacrifice."

The book is available at Athens Book Center and can be ordered through
Lulu.com . Urban's previous collections include "Alight," "Skull-Job," and "Night's Voice."
