null All Employee Learning Day Cancelled
How are you liking this weather?  (Don't you love it when people say that to you -- especially folks living in Florida!!)

The last couple weeks have been quite challenging.  I know many of you are concerned about how we can deliver our coursework in the reduced time due to the weather related closings.  So, we have decided it is in the best interest for our students to use February 26 - All Employee Learning Day - as a class day. Please remind your students that classes will be held that day.

The assessment plans and curriculum maps are still due to me by end of that day.

Also, I wanted to say thank you to all of the faculty who have used MOODLE during this time of weather challenges to stay connected with our students.

School of Natural Resources Honored with Heart of Hocking Award
Hocking College School of Natural Resources was honored to receive the Heart of Hocking award during the 49th Annual Winter Hike on Saturday, January 18, 2014.

The Heart of Hocking Award is given each year to an individual or organization that expresses their passion for the Hocking Hills State Park by dedicating numerous volunteer hours to improve and maintain the area. After decades of involvement with Hocking Hills State Park, Hocking College was recently honored with this award.

"Many of the special events or projects that have been conducted here at Hocking Hills could not have been completed without their assistance and the support of the Hocking College staff and administration," the award submission noted.

The college has worked on projects from repairing steps and bridges to completing nest surveys and wildlife mapping.  Major events held at the park, such as the Maple Sugaring Festival and the Frontier Hike, were also made possible through the direct help of Hocking College students.

Kenneth Bowald, Dean of the School of Natural Resources and Kenneth Temple, Natural Resources Law Enforcement, accepted the award on behalf of the school at Cedar Falls, the halfway point of the six mile hike from Old Man's Cave to Ash Cave.

Bowald, with great appreciation for this honor, said "Hocking College is fortunate to have one of Ohio's premiere state parks right in our backyard.  Not only does it provide great opportunities for our Natural Resources students, but many of the staff are Hocking College graduates.  We share not only a name, but a tradition of conservation, education, and recreation. This award is a great honor!"

Fifteen Passenger Van Policy Change
Hocking College recently received a notice from our insurance provider, Alteris Insurance Services, alerting us to a safety risk within our campus fleet regarding the use of 15 passenger vans. Alteris recommends using school buses with trained CDL drivers at all times to transport students; 15 passenger vans do not meet the National Highway Safety Transportation Board Standards required for school buses.

In accordance with these recommendations, Hocking College will be replacing all 15 passenger vans with with smaller buses over the next year. However, effective Monday, February 10, 2014, the rear seat in all 15 passenger vans will be removed, allowing no more than 10 passengers to be transported. We recognize this operational change impacts many of our educational programs and ask that you consult with your dean(s) to plan off-campus trips accordingly.  As of today, Fleet Operations will only release vehicles meeting the new policy standards.

Due to this policy change, faculty, staff and students may choose to use their own vehicles and/or transporting other individuals. Nothing prohibits the use of one's personal vehicle for any academic or education related trip. However, please be advised that INSURANCE FOLLOWS THE VEHICLE. This means that even though you may be on a Hocking College sponsored or required event, if you are in a personal vehicle, and there is an accident, Hocking College is not responsible for damages to the vehicle or any person.  The person who owns the vehicle is responsible for carrying adequate insurance, and it would be that insured owner who would be responsible for any damage should something unfortunate happen. It is always a good idea when traveling in someone's personal vehicle to make sure they are a licensed driver with no restrictions and that they are adequately insured.

Knowingly using vehicles that do not meet all National Transportation Safety Standards exposes Hocking College and our drivers to increased liability. Use of these vehicles also puts our students at a greater risk of injury in the event of an accident.

If you have any question, please feel free to contact Myriah Davis, Vice President of Administrative Services.
Presidents List 13
2013 President's List Recipients
President's List Application Available
Students with a 3.5 or higher accumulative grade point average and a minimum of 30 Hocking College credit hours will receive an invitation to apply for consideration for the President's List.  Students are asked to apply online this year via this survey. Those selected for the President's List demonstrate outstanding leadership and service, and maintain the highest academic standards.

Faculty and staff endorsements are critical in the selection process.  Endorsements with specific information, completed by staff that work closely with a student and have first-hand knowledge of leadership skills and service activities, are a powerful point of consideration in the process. If you cannot provide specific information on leadership and service, please refer the student to another staff member for endorsement.

Students are ineligible for consideration if endorsement forms are not part of their portfolios at the time of review.  This year's endorsements are due March 1, 2014. The selection committee will meet during March to select those fitting the criteria.

Reminder: Black Tie Tea to Benefit Student Emergency Fund
The Hocking College Foundation will host a formal afternoon tea to benefit the Hocking College Student Emergency Fund. The tea will be held at Rhapsody Restaurant in Nelsonville on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Cost is $25 per person.

The Hocking College Foundation is working to create a Student Emergency Fund to help students with needs through small aid amounts or with emergency loans.  Many Hocking College students work and have families to support while attending classes. An unexpected financial emergency - the loss of a job, a health crisis, rising rent or childcare cost - often forces a student to leave their dream of a college degree behind.

Reservations are available for 2 p.m., 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. tea times. Business attire is requested. Reservations are required by February 13, 2014. For further information or to reserve a tea time, contact Chef Katie McGushin at mcgushink@hocking.edu or 740.753.7608.
Alumni Spotlight

Hocking Alumnus Retires After 40 Years
After an extensive and rewarding career as a firefighter at the Athens Fire Department, Hocking alumnus, Robert Troxel plans to retire after 40 years. Troxel's career began in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, and later shifted into a career as an electrician at the Athens Mental Health Center, as well as a paramedic for the Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Service.  After being encouraged to pursue firefighting and receiving an outstanding score on his firefighting exam, he was offered a position with the Athens Fire Department.

Troxel graduated from Hocking College in 1979 with an Associate of Science in Fire Science. He also acquired his Bachelor of Science in Fire and Safety Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He later returned to the Athens area to obtain his Master of Science in Environmental Studies at Ohio University.  The knowledge and experience given to him during his time at Hocking and throughout his life allowed him to become chief of the Athens Fire Department after just 13 years on the job.

Troxel currently holds a position on the Hocking College Board of Trustees, which he has held since September of 2011. Besides his responsibilities as a board member, he also has a passion for educating others on the outdoors. Although he has made the decision to retire from his long and successful career in firefighting, he is grateful for the memories and opportunities he experienced during his time in the profession.

In honor of his service, Troxel will be presented with the Public Safety/Military Hometown Hero award at the American Red Cross of Southeast Ohio's Hometown Hero Breakfast at the Athens Community Center on February 11.

For more information, see the recent Athens Messenger article about Troxel.

Snowden workers cut through 8 inches of ice to prepare for the Polar Plunge.

Lake Snowden Hosts Polar Plunge

Great job to the Lake Snowden staff for braving the cold and getting ready for the Polar Plunge!

More than 100 volunteers jumped into the mainly frozen Lake Snowden on Saturday. More than eight inches of ice was cut through a small section of the lake the day before to allow participants to jump without hitting ice. The Polar Plunge is a fundraiser for Special Olympics Ohio; this year's event raised nearly $25,000. Read more about this year's event in The Athens News.
