null New and Familiar
Creating a new relationship with someone with whom you are already familiar is a great concept I learned on one of those darkest, brightest days of my life.

My mom passed away two days after Thanksgiving, on her wedding anniversary.  We were all devastated, but we lived through it, like you always do.  We had the year of struggles with each passing event...first birthdays, first Easter, first Fourth of July, first Halloween.  These days were all so different now.

But Thanksgiving the next year was going to be tough, and we all knew it.  My brother and sister both decided that Dad needed to get out of the house that day.  So they each planned Thanksgiving at their homes with their families -- which of course started a big war between them.  "He should come over here." "No, he should come here."  The back and forth made Dad crazy, so he decided to just stay home.  And since I was coming home, we decided to have our own Thanksgiving and make our own dinner.

Dad and I never had a good relationship.  I never thought he accepted me, and thought he was disappointed that I was not the manly son he needed.  He felt I did things to intentionally hurt him.  We were both so wrong, and we never knew it, until the darkest, brightest day.

I got home the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.  We went grocery shopping to get the goods.  And we had no idea what we were doing.  Although now I am a pretty good cook, then I could burn water.  And the only meal Dad made was franks and beans, the traditional father favorite.  We were making our shopping list based on our memories of Mom.  And we did the cooking the same way.  And the whole time we laughed, talked, reminisced, drank, burned, cried and learned about each other.  He told me about his first date with Mom; I told him about all the trouble I got into in college that he never knew about.

We ate our Sushi Turkey (we coined the phrase because the turkey was black on the outside, and raw in the middle), dry stuffing, crunchy mashed potatoes and lumpy sweet potato pie in style.  I realized that Dad was funny, intelligent, classy and sentimental.  He learned that I was creative, silly, enthusiastic and smart.

So although the day was darkest, for we both missed her so much, there was brightness because we learned great lessons about each other.

New and familiar -- not starting over, because the past is there, starting new and changing the path.

As this new year begins, I challenge all of you to create "new and familiar" relationships with those people with whom you work, lead, motivate and educate.  Because in that "new and familiar," great things will come to all of us.

Reminder: Black Tie Tea to Benefit Student Emergency Fund
The Hocking College Foundation will host a formal afternoon tea to benefit the Hocking College Student Emergency Fund. The tea will be held at Rhapsody Restaurant in Nelsonville on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Cost is $25 per person.

The Hocking College Foundation is working to create a Student Emergency Fund to help students with needs through small aid amounts or with emergency loans.  Many Hocking College students work and have families to support while attending classes. An unexpected financial emergency - the loss of a job, a health crisis, rising rent or childcare cost - often forces a student to leave their dream of a college degree behind.

Reservations are available for 2 p.m., 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. tea times. Business attire is requested. Reservations are required by February 13, 2014. For further information or to reserve a tea time, contact Chef Katie McGushin at [email protected] or 740.753.7608.

student-walking-hallway.jpg Counseling Center Offers New Mental Health Groups
The Hocking College Counseling Center now offers two mental health focused groups every Wednesday for the remainder of the spring semester. Both groups will meet in Oakley 204 and will be facilitated by Kathleen Kutsko, M.Ed, LPC. The groups are open to any and all interested students.

The first group, Using Positive Psychology to Manage Your Stress, will be offered from 5 - 6 p.m. each Wednesday. This mental health group focuses on developing coping skills and techniques to manage stress levels for students.

Following the stress management group, from 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. the Women Supporting Women group will meet to help female students discover keys to healthy relationships, improving self-esteem, developing assertiveness and handling crisis in life.

Additionally, in an effort to raise awareness about mental health campus wide, Judith Wymer, M.Ed., PC/CR is recruiting students to start an Active Minds student chapter at Hocking College. The objectives of this organization are to promote positive mental health and wellness, educate administrators and students about signs and symptoms of mental health disorders, as well as encourage struggling students to reach out and seek help. Active Minds chapters are focused on promoting and educating on positive mental health. Chapters are not peer support groups and do not provide any form of counseling or other mental health service.

For more information please contact Judy Wymer. For information on all of the services offered by the Hocking College Counseling Center, visit their webpage.

Alumni Spotlight

Alumna Fulfills Lifelong Dream
Hocking College graduate Laura (Bauer) Lytle (2002), has followed her passion and fulfilled her lifelong dream of being a travel nurse.

Lytle decided to enter the nursing field because of her best friend's mother's important role in her life. Lytle's mother passed away when she was young, so her best friend's mother encouraged her to enter the nursing field. Little did she know, this field was her life's calling.

She entered travel nursing because she loved the prospect of going to travel and see the world while doing what she loves, nursing.

"It seemed like a dream come true, and it was! I was not disappointed with anything about traveling. I got to spend my free time exploring my area, meeting new friends, experiencing the culture and soaking in California's coast," Lytle said.

Lytle remarked that Hocking College taught her the values of nursing and respect for the classroom. Her favorite thing about Hocking College was the "old-school" feel to it.

According to Lytle, "The teachers instilled the old-school traditions, such as offering your seat to a physician, and the demand for respect in the classroom. I also liked that it was small, not a large university like OU is down the street. I felt like a person, not a number."

Lytle's best experiences in the field have been travel nursing and working in critical care.

After enjoying post-grad life, Lytle is now focusing on being a mother to her one-year-old daughter and a wife to her husband.
Mission

Hocking College provides a unique, innovative, and quality education in a supportive experience- based learning environment, preparing students for employment and transfer education opportunities, while teaching the value of lifelong learning, promoting diversity and developing citizens who are engaged in their local and global communities.
