From the President Hocking to Participate in Community College Survey of Student Engagement
This spring, Hocking College will once again participate in a national survey focused on teaching, learning and retention in community colleges, the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). The project is part of the Center for Community College Student Engagement and the Community College Leadership Program at The University of Texas at Austin.
Research shows that the more actively engaged students are - with college faculty, staff, other students, and the subject matter being learned - the more likely they are to persist in their college studies and to achieve at higher levels. Identifying what our students do in and out of the classroom, knowing their goals, and understanding their external responsibilities can help us create an environment that can enhance student learning and retention.
The survey will be administered in classes randomly selected by the Center to ensure a representative sample and to preserve the integrity of the survey results. In the upcoming weeks, instructors whose classes are selected for the survey will receive specific information from our Director of Institutional Research, Kensey Love. If you would be interested in assisting her with analyzing the survey results and developing recommendations for action, please notify Kensey at lovek@hocking.edu.
Hocking College is dedicated to continuous improvement, and this survey can assist us in efforts to improve course and degree completion rates. To learn more about CCSSE, please visit www.ccsse.org.

Culinary Students will offer big bowls of home-style chili, bean soup, vegetable soup and fresh warm bread for $2.00 in the Hocking College Art Gallery.

Black Tie Tea to Benefit Student Emergency Fund
The Hocking College Foundation will host a formal afternoon tea to benefit the Hocking College Student Emergency Fund. The tea will be held at Rhapsody Restaurant in Nelsonville on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Cost is $25 per person.
The Hocking College Foundation is working to create a Student Emergency Fund to help students with needs through small aid amounts or with emergency loans. Many Hocking College students work and have families to support while attending classes. An unexpected financial emergency - the loss of a job, a health crisis, rising rent or childcare cost - often forces a student to leave their dream of a college degree behind.
According to Libby Villavicencio, Executive Director of the Hocking College Foundation, the only emergency financial help currently available to students is through a loan against the student's next semester financial aid. "This doesn't work for students in their last term or students without financial aid; this new fund can help those students stay in college and cross the finish line," Villavicencio said.
Reservations are available for 2 p.m., 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. tea times. Business attire is requested. Reservations are required by February 13, 2014. For further information or to reserve a tea time, contact Chef Katie McGushin at mcgushink@hocking.edu or 740.753.7608.

Hocking Adjunct Faculty Publishes New Collection of Poetry
"God's Will," the latest collection of poetry by Hocking College adjunct English faculty Scott Urban, has been published as part of a new line Mad Rush Books. Far from a religious polemic, the collection features cutting-edge verse that examines loss, death, faith and, more rarely, redemption. Urban said, "Inspiration from my poems comes from a variety of sources - stories that friends tell me, items I read in the news and personal experiences. My imagination is caught by individuals in extreme situations, because I feel you get a glimpse of another's soul when you see how he or she reacts to the unexpected." The centerpiece of this collection is the multi-section title poem, which memorializes the victims of the 2006 West Virginia Sago mine disaster. "When I first read about what those miners endured - and their heroism in the face of soul-crushing horror - I knew right away I had to deal with it through my writing," Urban said. "Both the best and the worst of humanity can be seen in this tragedy - fear, greed, hope, bravery and sacrifice." The book is available at Athens Book Center and can be ordered through Lulu.com. Urban's previous collections include "Alight," "Skull-Job," and "Night's Voice."

Campus Climate Committee Survey Update
Deni Naffziger-Hackworth recently provided an update on the status of the Campus Climate Committee Survey. Naffziger-Hackworth writes: Your patience as the Climate Committee poured through the survey results has been greatly appreciated. You already know how lengthy the survey was; the feedback, complete with narrative responses, added up to 149 pages. We spent a considerable amount of time reading your comments and identifying patterns in the written sections. Once the summaries were completed, we were pleased to discover that the general comments (patterns that were identified) were reflected in the numerical data.
The 2013 Climate Survey results have been uploaded to the Intranet under Materials / Institutional Research. There you can click on the links for each of the three groups surveyed. A fourth link is also available that presents results for the campus as a whole. Because your narrative comments were anonymous, they have not been posted for everyone to read; however, anyone who would like to read them is welcome to attend the next Climate Committee meeting and a copy will be made available for review at that time.
We ask that you read the survey results carefully, as we did, and consider what measures might be implemented to address some or all of the issues reflected in the data. Ideally, you will have formal and/or informal conversations within your departments as well. Please email your suggestions and ideas (individually or by department) by Friday, February 14 to naffziger-hackwortha@hocking.edu.
Suggestions should be directly related to information garnered from the survey results. The Climate Committee will meet again the third week of February to assimilate our collective ideas and send recommendations to administration, who will then discuss our recommendations and return with a plan of action.

Phi Theta Kappa Celebrates 100 New Members
Hocking College's Phi Theta Kappa Chapters achieved their "100 Member Goal" for 2013! Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for the two year college. Hocking College has three chapters: Alpha Mu Delta Chapter (main campus), Beta Lambda Nu (Perry Campus) and Beta Sigma Omega (Hocking College Energy Institute).
Eligible students have earned at least twelve credit hours at Hocking College and achieved a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Invitations for 2014 will be e-mailed the last week of January and formally mailed the first week of February. Each chapter will hold their annual induction ceremony later this spring for all members who join this school year. For questions, contact advisor Julie Cohara.
Congratulations to the 100 members who joined Phi Theta Kappa at Hocking College in 2013!
WORD OF CAUTION: PTK IMPOSTER! Several HC students have received e-mail invitations to honorsociety.org. This is not Phi Theta Kappa. If the legitimacy of an honor society invitation is ever in doubt, please don't hesitate to contact Julie Cohara. Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in the world, and the only one endorsed by the American Association of Community Colleges. Hocking College's only two honor societies are Phi Theta Kappa (for all students) and Kappa Beta Delta (for business students only).

Honoring Ryan Seitz, A Fallen Firefighter
On September 24, 2010, alumni Ryan Seitz was killed in the line of duty. Last year, a Distinguished Service Award from the Vinton County Fire Department and community was presented to Seitz's family as a way to remember his remarkable sacrifice. Seitz was a young firefighter and had been a member of the McArthur Fire Department for just two months when he responded to a call for mutual aid at a Londonderry brush fire. More than 100 firefighters were working through hot, windy conditions when a pressurized tank exploded striking Seitz in the chest, killing him instantly. The 26-year-old had a friendly smile, an outgoing personality and an enthusiasm for life that made him well-liked by everyone who knew him. He attended Hocking College in 2004, where he earned an associate's degree in Computer Networking. "Ryan epitomized what it means to be part of a community. He was kind to others, he was willing to reach out and do something for another person, even if it wasn't convenient for him. He wanted to be a good neighbor and a good citizen," Brandi Betts, Vinton County Marketing Director, said. The Vinton County community is remembering Seitz in a variety of ways. A plaque has been dedicated to him, along with a 5K run/walk to raise money for the Ryan Seitz Memorial Fund. A portion of Route 50 was also renamed in his honor.
