Paramedic Alum Explores Dance Passion
Josh Hines '10 pursued his plans to obtain an associate's degree in Firefighting and Emergency Medical Services from Hocking College, but he has also been committed to his other passion -- dancing.
"There's something about it," Hines said. "I can let go of everything and put it all out on the dance floor." Hines found this passion in high school because a friend needed a partner for swing-dancing lessons, to which Hines obliged. Throughout his time at Hocking College, Hines would dance several nights a week and compete on weekends, while maintaining his grades and career in firefighting. "It's about how each person has more than one identity - that people change from identity to identity throughout life." We hope all our students and alumni follow Hines lead to remain dedicated to their passions in and outside of their experience at Hocking College. Read more about Hines' experience with dance on the Columbus Dispatch website.

Hocking Proud Paints Snow Plow Blade

Hocking College's student spirit club, Hocking Proud, spent some time painting a snow plow blade with a Hocking College design recently.
For the first time, the Ohio Department of Transportation District 10 partnered with area schools on the Paint the Plow project, which allowed schools to decorate a plow blade. Hocking Proud members Kiara Ivory, Jenna Ferguson, Katelyn Croghan and Alexis Nixon spent time over three days, including more than four hours on the third day to finish the design, painting the 4 foot by 11 foot plow blade. The members were excited for the chance to paint the plow blade, and said they really had fun doing it. Group members represent a variety of programs in the college, and this project gave them a chance to spend time together designing and painting. They wanted to take on the project because it was good publicity for the college and for their club. The Hocking Proud school spirit club has done various projects since their start, including a fund raising Pie-A-Thon in October. Meetings are held Mondays at 4 p.m. in the Student Center. For additional information, contact Hocking Proud President Kiara Ivory. |

Alum Finds Her Place After Earning Nursing Degree
Hocking College alumna Diana Dick '07 found out devastating news at age 17; she was losing her hearing. For the past 12 years, her hearing loss has been gradual. The experience was very traumatic for Dick, "I knew what it was (like) to hear. I was going to movies with my friends. That's what was important to me. I was devastated," she said.
Six years ago, Dick started to find her place. She earned a nursing degree from Hocking College and began working at Fairfield Medical Center. She then took a job at the Ohio School for the Deaf in Columbus. When she began working with the deaf, she also began running again. Dick ran cross country and track while in high school at New Lexington. After entering and winning a 5K in Lancaster, Dick realized she had a talent. She was selected as a member of the U.S. Deaf Track Team and began training for the international competition in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 2013 Summer Deaflympics was held in Sofia, and Dick was one of 12 athletes from nine different countries to attend. Although she did not win a medal, she learned from the experience. "I found myself," she said. "There are so many people just like you. They are hard of hearing or deaf and they have a passion for their sport."

The Anatomy of Resilience
Earlier in 2013, Hocking College AIS student Grace Wyatt gave a moving speech during the STARS ceremony about her addiction to alcohol. She recently wrote an essay on The Anatomy of Resilience that reminds faculty and staff why they are important in students lives. On St. Patrick's Day of 2012, Wyatt almost lost her life in a bicycle accident. She had a traumatic brain injury and was in a subsequent coma. After recovery, she returned to Hocking College with the specific intention of being as involved as possible both in and out of the classroom. "In the classroom, I learned the value of teamwork from group projects, the art of communication from the best instructors, problem solving from my most challenging coursework and leadership skills by presenting in class and tutoring students in need." She quickly gained traction and became a leader in the freshmen orientation program, joined student government and became a STARS student, where her communication skills were put to the test when she had to speak on her alcohol addiction that led to her near-death accident. "In the Hocking College classroom, we are constantly reminded of the importance and benefits of creating a positive environment to assist our patients in recovery." Wyatt still wrestles with her addiction to alcohol, but is able to fight back with the support of her community and college. "By taking advantage of every resource on campus, I provide my injured, recovering and addicted brain with all that it needs to take me to my career goal of becoming a dedicated health care professional and providing the same level of excellent care that was given to me."

Hocking College Partners with Atco for Riding Lessons
Hocking College and a local horse farm owner are providing therapeutic horseback riding lessons for area adults with developmental disabilities and creating educational experiences for college students.
Tami Harter, who spearheaded the program, is a certified riding instructor through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International and a workshop specialist at Atco. Heath Harter, Tami's husband, accompanies her on this journey to campus to provide these lessons. "They feel a sense of happiness when working with an animal," Tami Harter said, describing the feedback she's received from the adults at Atco. "A horse doesn't judge them because they may have a disability. It can appreciate getting attention while the individual is learning a new skill." Sarah Baker, the owner and manager of EMBE Acres Horse Farm, donates the use of her facility for the program. Both Tami and Heath say they hope to see the program expand. Tami said she'd like to see weekly riding opportunities for the adults enrolled with Atco. Heath would like to see a Hocking College class dedicated to therapeutic riding. The next weekend workshop is being scheduled for sometime in the fall of 2014. Read more about this program on The Athens Messenger.

Students Take "Memorial Voices" Trip to Washington, D.C.
Over the 2013 Veterans Day weekend, students from Susan Fletcher's Research Skills class visited Washington D.C. as a part of the annual Memorial Voices trip. This year's trip marked the fifth year. Students visited various memorial sites and museums around the nation's capitol. Seventeen students went, and many talked about the impact the trip had on them. The students encountered a number of veterans at the different memorials and said the personal stories they heard were "not something you would ever read in a textbook." One vet shared his experience in Special Forces, working with K9 "super dogs." This story prompted the class to do some additional research to learn more about this Army program. At the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, one veteran talked about the lack of respect Vietnam vets received when they returned home. The students also learned that, in addition to the number of soldiers killed in any conflict, a number of veterans lose their life after returning home due to mental health issues, drugs and suicide. The group visited the Holocaust Museum, which they said was "scary and sad," and included a room filled with shoes recovered from the camps, which reminds viewers to remember the individuals lost. Several programs are represented in the class, and the students said before the trip they didn't talk to each other much. While on the trip, the students talked each evening about their experiences. Following the trip, the Research Skills class is working on a project to interview a veteran or currently active service member. For more photos from the trip, see the Hocking College Flickr page.

Two New Members Selected for Board of Trustees
Tom Johnson and Joseph Ogden, both of Perry County, were selected to serve on the Hocking College Board of Trustees by a caucus of school board presidents from Athens, Hocking and Perry counties. Johnson and Ogden will complete the unexpired terms of Dr. Larry Rentschler and Darlene Wells, both of Perry County, who resigned from the board before the completion of their terms, which end August 31, 2015. Due to regulations restricting the number of government agency employees who may serve as trustees, Johnson will not be sworn into service until the March Board of Trustees meeting. Johnson is the Mayor of the Village of Somerset and retired Vice President from a career in international banking. He is now devoting his time to public service efforts in local civic and economic development, historic preservation and the arts and heritage tourism. Johnson is a graduate of Ohio State University, and has an MBA from Henley Management College in England. Ogden is President of family-owned Ogden Insurance Agency. He has served on several boards, such as the New Lexington Board of Education and the Lions Club. He also attended Hocking College.
