Alum Reaches Goal of Joining Peace Corps
Hocking College Alumnus, Matthew Fitzpatrick '11, is taking a very unique and rewarding route, moving to Zambia, Africa for 27 months with the Peace Corps.
Before beginning the Forest Management program at Hocking, Fitzpatrick had no idea what it entailed. As he progressed through college, it seemed more and more logical for him to join the Peace Corps, Fitzpatrick said. "I have a passion for helping people and the environment as well as a great desire to live in an environment foreign from my own and the Peace Corps seems like a great organization to do these things." During his time in Zambia, Fitzpatrick will work as a Forestry Agent. The tasks he will face are varied, but concentration is on increased food production and agribusiness. He will assist rural communities to adopt agricultural technologies and techniques that will lead to increased food production. In agribusiness, he will help community members to increase their incomes and income-generating opportunities. Fitzpatrick believes his knowledge from his environmental degree helped him get in the Peace Corps. He spent most of his summers during school working for a nonprofit forest conservation organization, Western Wildlife Corridor in Cincinnati, Ohio. His work in the Peace Corps seems vast and varied, and he will not know what all it will entail until he is there, said Fitzpatrick.

The Elevator Speech Marketing Tool
When you're on the search for a new job, it's important to pull out all the stops. The competition for jobs is fierce; in order to stand out amongst the crowd you have to market yourself in the best way possible. For some of us, that doesn't come as easily as others but creating an "Elevator Speech" concisely stating who you are and your most valuable assets can get you on the right track.
For those of you who haven't heard of an Elevator Speech, it's a speech designed to sell an organization or individual's brand to someone in the amount of time it takes to ride in an elevator with a stranger from the top of the building to the bottom floor. It should be engaging, persuasive and brief so that you could theoretically tell it to anyone you meet for career networking, job fairs, during job interviews if asked to talk about yourself, or in everyday situations where you might meet someone and describe what you do in your professional life.

She also led a discussion at a center-sponsored symposium where she described for her peers how she teaches remedial English to fire science students by using material that relates to their work - known as "high-interest material." This lesson can apply to instructors at other two-year colleges around the state, even if they are not teaching fire science students, according to Pittman.
