Award-Winning Author on Sex-Trafficking to Speak of Experience
Award-winning author Theresa Flores will visit Hocking College to speak about her experience with sex trafficking on Tuesday, November 19 from 1 - 4 p.m. in the Student Center.
Theresa Flores is a survivor. As a 16-year-old girl in a well-to-do white suburban neighborhood, Theresa survived two years of being trafficked to men in their 20's and 30's. Theresa will speak out on the reality of human trafficking in the U.S.
Flores has visited multiple universities as well as made appearances on the 700 Club, the Today Show and MSNBC's Sex Slaves-The Teen Trade segment. Her book was the best-seller list in the categories of family law, child abuse, women's studies and political science. Her books will be available for sale before and after the event.
Faculty and staff are invited to attend, as well as to bring entire classes of students and student organizations.

Fitness Management Students Excel
On November 2, 2013, Dan Neundorf, a second-year Fitness Management student, competed in the "Backyard Meet of the Century II" located in Sacramento, California. He placed second overall in this meet and boasted a pro-qualifying total.
He totaled 1,824 pounds with his personal best lifts on squat: 744 lbs., Bench: 358 lbs, and Deadlift: 722 lbs. This competition was held by Animal Pak, an extreme body-building gym that focuses on sacrificing the body to the sport and lifestyle of weightlifting.
In related news, Austin Keith, a second-year Fitness Management student, recently competed in body building contests in Austintown, Ohio and took second place in his group. This was his first competition and he is currently training to compete again. Keith also placed second in the Youngstown Cardinal classic that was held in September.
In addition to those winners, Klint Connery placed second in the Pittsburgh Pro Weightlifting Competition last May. Carri Woodgerd placed first in novice open class and took the overall win, as well.
Connery is a second-year Fitness Management student. Woodgerd is a Physical Therapy Assistant Program graduate from summer 2013. Keith, Connery and Woodgerd posed at the Hocking College Weightlifting Competition held on November 7.

November Book Drive to be Held for Better World Books
During the month of November, four bins will be located throughout on Hocking College's main campus for faculty and students to donate their books. The bins will be located in Oakley 312, the library, Concourse and the last is to be announced. Thanks to your help, throughout the 2012-2013 school year, 4,700 pounds of books were collected toward this literacy effort with Better World Books. Better World Books collects and ships these books across the U.S. to support worldwide literacy work. any book, even used or old books as long as it is in readable condition can be donated. Magazines, journals, trade publications and similar items cannot be donated. If you cannot find books to donate, you can help in other ways such as emptying the bins, counting the books, packing and strapping up the shipping boxes and affixing labels. Some students have already signed up to help, but more hands are always needed. Please contact Carla Ryan-Hirst with any questions.

Spring Registration Dates
Advising for spring semester 2014 will begin on Monday, November 18. The course offerings will be available on WebAdvisor and departments will have block schedules for students.
Priority registration for spring semester 2014 will begin on Monday, November 25 and run through November 27.
Open registration will begin on Thursday, November 28.
Spring 2014 QuickStart will be held Friday, December 6 at 9:30 a.m.

 Schools Host November Food Drive
The School of Allied Health and the School of Nursing are holding a food drive during the month of November. The food will be donated to the Hocking College food pantry for students.
Boxes will be placed in DVD 309 and DVD 217 for faculty, staff and students to donate.
Some nutritious, non-perishable foods include:
- Meals in a can (stew, chili, soup)
- Tuna and canned meat
- Peanut butter
- Canned foods with pop-top lids
- Low-sugar cereals
- 100% fruit juices
- Canned fruit packaged in juice
- Canned vegetables
- Chili with beans
- Cereal, popcorn and granola

November is Diabetes Awareness Month
November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes is a condition where the body fails to utilize ingested glucose properly. This could be due to lack of the hormone insulin or because the insulin that is available is not working effectively. According to the American Diabetes Association, 25.8 million children and adults in the United States - 8.3 percent of the population - have diabetes.
Anthem has provided some valuable information that we will be sharing throughout the month.

Student Wins Dr. Pepper Tuition Prize
Hocking College student Jonathan Haag won $500 for tuition from Dr. Pepper.
The tuition contest was posted in the Dining Hall. Students could scan a tag on Dr. Pepper cups to enter.
Dr. Pepper is giving away more than $1,000,000 in tuition in 2013 to help students across the country pursue their dreams. Since 2008, the Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway has changed lives by giving away millions of dollars in tuition.

Impact on Wellness also always has information online about health and wellness. It is a quick and beneficial opportunity to research advice on how to live a balanced life.

 Hocking College Organizing Collegiate FFA Chapter
Hocking College School of Natural Resources is organizing a collegiate chapter of the Future Farmers of America Organization (FFA), with the first meeting on Wednesday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the NR first floor lounge.
In order to become involved, students must have participated in FFA prior to attending Hocking College. In this organization, students will be able to further their FFA experience and possibly represent Hocking College at state and national events.
FFA's mission is to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. This organization helps students discover their passion in life and build on that insight to chart the course for their educations, career and personal future.

GeoEnvironmental Students Examine Ohio's Bedrock
GeoEnvironmental Science students recently took a field trip to examine Ohio's bedrock at numerous outcrops across the state. In the required Ohio Geology course, students study the physical attributes, economic significance and geologic origin of Ohio's rocks.
The course provides students hands-on experience with Ohio's important bedrock units, as well as a foundation of Ohio-specific, conceptual geologic knowledge. Most of the projects these students will be involved with during their careers will concern environmental problems that impact or are impacted by Ohio's geologic resources.

The Hocking School of Music, in conjunction with the Broadcast Production and Engineering program, will continue the fourth annual Lunchtime Concert Series on Tuesdays in November. They will take place in the Light Dining Hall, starting around 11:15 a.m. The performers are as follows:

 Student Wins Rocky Brands Giveaway
Congratulations to Brody Smith on winning the Rocky Brands / WLCI 97.5 The Fix Giveaway.
Smith is an Industrial Ceramics Engineering major at Hocking College.
Another drawing was held the week of November 4 for a free SmartStart experience next autumn semester, and a Hocking College hoodie of choice.

 Results of Cornhole Tournament
On November 1, Hocking College's Logan campus held a cornhole tournament. After several close calls, the team of Industrial Ceramics students, Joe Vekas and Daniel Bender, won. They beat six other teams in a riveting double elimination competition.
Congratulations, Joe and Daniel! Way to represent the Engineering Technology School.

Host International Students This Thanksgiving
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it is important to remember holidays that focus so much on family and togetherness may bring special challenges to those who study here as international students. Hocking College has several international students who would love the chance to spend part of or all of Thanksgiving day with you and your family.

Reminder: Allied Health and Nursing Career Fair
Be sure to tell your students about the Allied Health and Nursing Career Fair on November 13 in the Student Center Multiplex, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. This event is free to all students and alumni.
Hocking College has more than 10 programs relating to Allied Health and Nursing. Appropriate dress is required and resume copies are recommended to provide to employers. This is a great opportunity to network in the nursing industry!

Jon Hull Drums His Way Into Music Career
Jon Hull has proved himself to be a professional musician as well as someone with diverse abilities. He is currently the drum technician/backline gear manager for the ever-so-famous Jason Aldean.
In the past, he has been the personal assistant to Rich Redmond, who is part of the Jason Aldean band. Jon has also shadowed Randy Baja, who is the production manager of Keith Urban. Jon has definitely made his way into the big leagues.
He has eight years of diverse professional drumming experience and graduated from Hocking in 1991 in the Music Management program with an impressive 3.76 GPA.

Thanks for Excavator Help at Veterans Memorial
Director of Landscape Operations Andy Freeman thanks Heavy Equipment faculty member Ted Hayes and his students for their help with the Veterans Memorial.
Freeman said, "Thanks to you and your students for taking the time to dig the trench for the drainage at Veterans Memorial Garden. I am happy the two students were able to help out and hope they enjoyed the field experience.
