From the President

From an "I" to an "A"
I'm very pleased to report that the final report of a Focused Visit conducted last month by Drs. Sue Darby and Diana Doyle has been reviewed and approved by the Higher Learning Commission, our regional accrediting agency in Chicago.

The report states that the evidence provided to the visitors assured them that we have made significant progress in the areas of academic program review, board relationships, learner outcome assessment, communication and shared governance.  Furthermore, no additional reports or visits were deemed necessary before our regular accreditation visit occurs in 2016.

Congratulations to everyone who contributed their time and energy in order to ensure this successful outcome.  A copy of the full report can be found here.
College Preparing Capital Bill Submission
Dr. Myriah Davis, Vice President of Administrative Services, has taken the lead on developing the Hocking College 2015-2020 Capital Plan submission.  In order to allocate the funds, Governor Kasich has formed the Higher Education Funding Commission, co-chaired by Ohio University President Roderick McDavis and Southern State Community College President Kevin Boys.

Capital funds will be distributed across the state-funded Ohio colleges and universities according to how well the requests meet the following criteria:
  • Help build world-class programs.
  • Focus on maintaining the investments the state has already made in existing campus facilities, instead of building new structures.
  • Stimulate creativity by advancing strategic collaborations through partnerships, both on campus and with others in the public and private sector.
  • Reflect the needs of today's student by strengthening their learning environments, ensuring their safety and encouraging new degree and certificate completion opportunities.
  • Increase Ohio's competitive advantage by capitalizing on our existing strengths.
  • Strengthen our ability to respond to new or increased workforce development opportunities in the state.
  • Encourage joint efforts to reduce construction costs and generate ongoing efficiencies.
Hocking College is requesting funding for 23 projects over the next six years, including the Workforce Development and Training Center renovation, at the current Inn at Hocking College; replacement and/or repair of all main campus roofs and HVAC systems, which are in different ranges of deferred maintenance years; campuswide sidewalks and exterior lighting; campus security enhancements; library renovation; music program facility renovation; and equine facility renovation.

In order to compile the list of projects to be submitted, Dr. Davis has relied on colleagues throughout campus to provide consultation, including those in the IT Department, Campus Police, Academic Affairs, Physical Plant, Finance, Hospitality, Catering & Events, Library, Administrative Services, President's Office and Tri-County Career Center.

The final plan is due on November 1, 2013.  Dr. Davis will be presenting the Hocking College 2015 -2020 Capital Plan to the Budget Advisory Committee (BAC) at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 8.  Everyone is welcome to attend the presentation for more details.
