Hocking College Faculty Featured in Athens Messenger
Hocking College adjunct faculty member, Greg Bikowski, received a spotlight in the Athens Messenger on October 11. Bikowski is a paramedic for Athens County Emergency Medical Services and an adjunct faculty member in the Hocking College Emergency Response lab.

The spotlight was based on his paramedic experience and why he decided on his career. Bikowski mentioned that his favorite thing about being a paramedic is that it has a "constantly changing environment. You never know what the day holds for you or what type of scene you'll respond to."

Congratulations, Greg. Hocking College is appreciative of your service!

moving-boxes.jpg Records Retention Policy
The retention period of a document is the period of time a document should be kept or "retained" electronically and/or in paper format. After the retention period, the document is usually destroyed. The retention period varies for different types of records and takes into account legal requirements and appropriate practices.

The Hocking College Records Retention Policy uses the retention schedule outlined in the manual on Records Retention for Public Colleges and Universities in Ohio, developed by the Inter-University Council of Ohio. The manual defines the five general categories of retention and has a comprehensive model retention schedule, listing record types and the suggested length of retention.

When disposing of records, remember not to shred anything yourself. Box up records to be purged, mark the general contents on the box, mark "Destroy" on the box and have the warehouse pick up the box for destruction.

For any questions regarding records retention, contact Laura Alloway, the Hocking College Public Records Officer.

Alumni Spotlight

Courageous Hocking College Alumni Survives the Unexpected
Hocking College Alumni Doug Reed is known as a hero to anyone who hears his story. Reed is a firefighter, loving husband and father of seven, and a member of the Ohio Army National Guard. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 where his life took an unexpected turn.

April 11, 2010 Master Sergeant Reed and his unit encountered a roadblock and were ambushed. Reed was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade that crushed almost every bone on the right side of his face. His injuries were catastrophic, and he was not expected to survive. His two best friends, Mike Burris and Ty Henry, were at his side immediately.

Due to his injuries, he was put on the hood of a HUM-V that drove him six miles to the hospital. Henry pinned himself on top of Reed, "Physically it was a difficult thing to keep him on the hood, and mentally it was a lot of things going on, your mind is going 10,000 miles per hour, you don't have time to think about emotions or what-
ifs," Henry said.

Reed was air-lifted out of Afghanistan and taken to Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. The doctors did not expect him to live, but his wife, Jana Reed, never gave up hope. "When you can't think of it day at a time, think of it moment at a time," Jana said. Which is what she did, for 55 days while Reed had amnesia. No one knew if he would come out of it, until he saw his children for the first time. Reed had a breakthrough, calling his kids by their pet names.

More than a dozen surgeries and 487 days in the hospital later, Reed was able to go home. When his unit came home from Afghanistan, they did not consider it their homecoming. "My homecoming was when Doug got released from the hospital finally," Burris said. The unit held their very own homecoming with Reed, where he was awarded a purple heart. "We came home as a team minus one. Until Doug got here. So, we are home. We're mission complete  now," stated Burris at their homecoming.

While Reed and Burris were in Afghanistan, they completed their online Associate's of Technical Studies degrees from Hocking College. They helped spread the word about this program and Reed became a National Guard Recruiting Manager where he had recruiters come to Hocking College.

Reed's story is nothing short of a miracle. He is a hero and a fighter. Reed works every day to strengthen himself and live a normal life. He is currently living in his hometown in Jackson, Ohio working with the fire department, ready to once again put his life on the line.

See this YouTube video for more information about Reed's courageous life. http://youtu.be/y4f32UaYnQM

Employee Becomes Official Moodle Contributor

Kudos to Hocking College's Online Application Specialist, James "Jesse" Henestofel. Jesse has recently become an official contributor to the open-source learning management system Moodle. His contribution includes improvement of the system's categorization of courses as well as a simplified and more intuitive user experience.

Becoming an official contributor to an open-source project is a major milestone in any software developer's career, but to become a contributor to such a widely adopted open-source project as Moodle is just exceptional. Well done Jesse!
