null The Joy of Possibilities
Two of my best friends adopted a little baby girl. She is just precious. She was born on July 5, but they got her on July 8, which is my birthday. Her name is Emma; my mom's name is Emma (insert Twilight Zone theme here). WOW. Needless to say when I met her we were instantly bonded. Babies do that to me.

So there we were . . . six well-educated, established professionals going crazy over this baby, this Emma. Funny how this peeing, pooping, and crying being can just change your whole world. But what was truly amazing was watching these individuals look at this baby, this Emma and build these wonderful scenarios for her. How we dreamed for her and hoped for her. And as I wrote about this in my journal - I realized what "it" was that made me love this moment so much. "It" was the JOY of POSSIBILITIES.

"Look at how long her fingers are, she is going to be a piano player, going to Juilliard and be a concert pianist!"

"Look at how her face moves when she sleeps. She is going to be very smart; she is a thinker!  She is going to Harvard and change the world, maybe even be the first African American female to win the Noble Prize for Physics."

"Look at how she moves her arms. She is graceful; she is going to be a dancer, a ballerina. She is going to command the stage."

"Hear that cry!! She is going to be a singer and perform at Carnegie Hall."

And as we continued to dream and hope for little Emma and all the possibilities for her, our hearts filled with joy. Knowing that we could be the spark to encourage her, the strength that supported her, the shoulder that consoled her and the love that believed in her everyday of her life. AMAZING.

So when you step into the classroom, are you filled with the Joy of Possibilities? Do you see the possibilities in every single student -- even the students that may not see the possibilities in themselves? Do you share that joy with your students everyday to encourage them, support them, console them, and believe in them?  I hope you do, and I hope that fills you with joy.

'Cause if there is no Joy in Possibilities - why are we here?

So remember my fellow educators - find the Joy of Possibilities in everything you do - in and out of the classroom.
Tobe Gillogly Receives Honorable PTA Award
Tobe Gillogly, Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) faculty, recently received the highest award a PTA can receive: Recognition of Advanced Proficiency.

Gillogly received this recognition in education this year and received the same award in pediatrics last year. She also was awarded the Pediatric Clinician of the Year Award, which is awarded to only one PTA in the United States.

For this award, Gillogly had to complete rigorous requirements including: five years of teaching experience, completion of 180 hours in the last year, 60 hours of continuing education in physical therapy within the last five years, 45 hours in the area of education alone, above average job performance evaluations, three activities that demonstrated leadership and she had to show contributions to her employer, profession and community.

Gillogly hopes this award will benefit her patients and students.

"I love teaching and I love my kiddos that I treat. It is an honor to be able to impact lives on multiple levels. I am constantly striving to better myself so that I can impact this world in a positive way that changes things, hopefully for the better," Gillogly said.

Short but Significant Safety: Tip #5
The last of the Short but Significant Safety Tips is for faculty and staff to share with students. Spread the word on how to stay safe in residence halls.

Students can stay safe by:
  • Locking their room door when they leave, no matter how long they will be gone. Students should not give out the code to anyone.
  • Students should not leave money or valuable items in their room. If they must, lock it in a secure area such as a safe.
  • Students should never let anyone they do not know into the building.
Join the efforts of Hocking College's Police Department and take measures to stay safe. For more on safety, visit http://www.hocking.edu/campussafety/prevention.

Alumni Spotlight

Alumni Food Vendor Hopes to Get on Four Wheels
Hocking College alumni Sam Canterbury is working to get Spork Truck rolling in Charleston,
South Carolina. Canterbury graduated in 2010 with an Associate's Degree in Culinary Arts. He has recently moved to Charleston and got this idea after experiencing the usual food options for lunch, dinner and late night.

Canterbury bought a used truck and has worked to repair and outfit the vehicle in preparation for its role of becoming a mobile restaurant.

"We all eat, but dining is an experience," he said. "It's all about the experience of your food." Canterbury plans to expand his menu to include sandwiches, salads and soups in addition to beef, chicken and pork tacos once he raises enough money to get the truck on the streets of Charleston.

The name stems from the spork utensil. Everything at the truck can be eaten with a spork or bare hands.

To help raise money, he has started an online crowd funding campaign. Individuals who donate to the campaign can receive discounts and merchandise with the Spork Truck logo, starting at a $10 donation. Part of the idea behind the crowd funding campaign is to give residents a sense of ownership and pride that they contributed to something new in the city, Canterbury said.

To find out more about Spork Truck, visit the Spork:Truck Facebook page or follow on twitter @sporktruck.
Reminder: The Bookstore is Currently Closed
The Hocking College Bookstore is closed for the move to its new location. It will reopen Monday, October 14, 2013 on the second floor of Davidson Hall. nullThanks for Help with Hocktoberfest

Many thanks to everyone who assisted in a successful first annual Hocktoberfest over the weekend.  From the planning committee, to those who organized the 100 plus volunteers, to the various alumni and staff members who donated their time, this year's event was truly a group effort!

A special thanks to Libby Villavicencio and Jestinah McDonald who spent countless hours organizing the inaugural event, and without whom Hocktoberfest would not be possible.

Great job to everyone involved!
