Short but Significant Safety: Tip #4
This week's article will be longer than usual, since the subject is cars. Since cars are so frequently used, tips are included to protect your from criminals and prevent vehicle theft. To protect yourself: - Check the back seat before entering.
- Keep your vehicle doors locked at all times, even when driving in the daylight.
- Keep enough gas in your tank for emergencies.
- Do not offer rides to anyone you don't know, even if he/she claims to be a student.
- Honk your horn if someone suspicious approaches your vehicle. Criminals do not like attention.
- Lift the hood, put on flashers and wait inside the vehicle with the doors locked if you break down. Ask people who stop to call the police or AAA for you. Do not accept a ride with anyone you do not know. Do not stop for standard motorists. You are of greater help to them by calling the police or highway patrol.
- Keep valuables in the trunk of your vehicle, not on the seats or floor.
- Park your car in well-lit areas.
- Remove all keys from your vehicle. Thieves look for keys.
To prevent vehicle theft follow the rules above, as well as the following:
- Always lock your vehicle.
- Never leave your vehicle running while unattended.
- Install an anti-theft device that is highly visible, hard to defeat and that renders the vehicle inoperable.
- When parking curbside, turn your wheels sharply to the curb and apply the emergency brake.
- Engrave Owner Applied Numbers on stereos and navigation equipment.
Be sure to pass these tips along to students. For more on safety, visit http://www.hocking.edu/campussafety/prevention. |

Health Care Reform
In 2014, the health care reform law creates a new type of online marketplace for purchasing health insurance coverage. This marketplace is referred to as a Health Insurance Marketplace, or an Exchange. You are not required to purchase coverage through the Marketplace as Hocking College will continue to offer health coverage.
Hocking College is taking extra steps to make sure you understand your health insurance coverage options that will be available starting in 2014.
If you purchase coverage through a Marketplace, you may be eligible for a federal subsidy that lowers your monthly premiums or reduces your cost sharing. To receive these federal savings, you cannot be eligible for health plan coverage through Hocking College that is affordable and provides "minimum value."
For more information on this health care reform, visit http://www.hocking.edu/humanresources.

Alumni Finds Her Place After Earning Nursing Degree
Hocking College alumni Diana Dick found out devastating news at age 17; she was losing her hearing. For the past 12 years, her hearing loss has been gradual. The experience was very traumatic for Dick, "I knew what it was (like) to hear. I was going to movies with my friends. That's what was important to me. I was devastated," she said.
Six years ago, Dick started to find her place. She earned a nursing degree from Hocking College and began working at Fairfield Medical Center. She then took a job at the Ohio School for the Deaf in Columbus. When she began working with the deaf, she also began running again. Dick ran cross country and track while in high school at New Lexington. After entering and winning a 5K in Lancaster, Dick realized she had a talent.
She was selected as a member of the U.S. Deaf Track Team and began training for the international competition in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 2013 Summer Deaflympics was held in Sofia, and Dick was one of 12 athletes from nine different countries to attend. Although she did not win a medal, she learned from the experience. "I found myself," she said. "There are so many people just like you. They are hard of hearing or deaf and they have a passion for their sport."

Special Thanks to Fleet Staff for Bypass Fundraiser Help
Kudos to Will Alder and all of the staff in Fleet for their help with the Route 33 Bypass fundraiser held this past Saturday! From Athens City Engineer and Hocking College Trustee Andrew Stone:
Will,
On behalf of Nelsonville Mainstreet, Athens County Big Brother Big Sisters, and Nelsonville- York Athletic Boosters, I want to thank you and your staff for the outstanding support with the busses during the US33 Opening Run/Walk/Bike event this past Saturday. Your punctuality, flexibility, enthusiasm, and professionalism were on full display. There were many moving parts of the event, but the bus transport of runners from the square to and from the 5k course was truly the DECISIVE POINT of the operation. Many things could have gone wrong with that, but because of you and your drivers, it was flawless.
Your performance brings great credit to Nelsonville, and to Hocking College in particular. We had nothing but great comments from participants and volunteers. Please pass on my thanks to the other drivers. I look forward to working with you in other capacities in the future.
Thanks again, Andrew B. Stone, PE

Paramedic Students Achieve 100 Percent Pass Rate
Kudos to Hocking College paramedic students - the class has achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam.
The students had an excellent initial pass rate of 82 percent. Two students took the exam again, and now all students have passed. According to Michael Whittemore, the school's Student Affairs Coordinator, "No faculty or staff can remember when the last time that has happened, especially with a class that size. We are all pretty excited about it!"
Congratulations to everyone who helped our students with this achievement!
