null Annual Shrimp Sale Announced
The annual shrimp harvest and sale at the Hocking College Fish Hatchery at Lake Snowden, harvested by Hocking's Fish Management and Aquaculture students, will take place on Friday, September 27. The fresh water shrimp will also be for sale the following day, Saturday, September 28 at the Athens Farmers Market located on East State Street.

The Seafood Institute has classified the Cultured Fresh Water Shrimp as a 'green' product. The shrimp look like regular sea shrimp but are milder in flavor. The mild flavor is also easier to season compared to sea shrimp. Fresh water shrimp are often preferred because people with allergies to sea shrimp are able to eat the fresh water variety.

The public is invited to come on Friday morning and observe or take part in the harvesting. Shrimp will be sold at noon or after the pond is harvested. If interested in purchasing the shrimp, bring a cooler, and the ice will be supplied. The shrimp will die after they are put on the ice, allowing for the freshest product available.

In case of thunderstorms, the rain date for the harvest and sale is Friday, October 4. The hatchery is located off State Route 50 West on County Road 80. Follow the "Shrimp" signs to the site. Please call 740.698.1925 for more information.

EdMap Pilot Continues in Autumn 2013
Hocking College and EdMap will continue their pilot eTextbook project through autumn semester 2013. The pilot will provide students a cheaper, online option for textbooks. If the pilot is successful, Hocking College will adapt the policy campus-wide.

The college is still evaluating the results from the summer 2013 trial. The autumn semester pilot includes Transfer Module courses.

The Schools of Hospitality and Allied Health will become part of the pilot for spring semester 2014.

EdMap provides many benefits to students and the environment. Etextbooks cost about half as much as their print counterpart. Students can save this money by simply paying a modest course fee, which will include their eTextbook. Along with saving money, eTextbooks are environmentally friendly and help prepare students for entrance into the high-tech world where we now live.

For a free trial, visit www.coursesmart.com and sign in with a student or faculty email.

Short but Significant Safety: Tip #2
The second set of tips is here! This week's safety tips will be on staying safe when outside the home or running errands.
  • Walk or jog with a friend. Avoid jogging after dark. If you must, stay in well-lit areas; walk midpoint between curbs and buildings and away from alleys and bushes.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you will return.
  • Do not fight back if your purse or wallet is snatched. Turn it over to the thief rather than risk personal injury and immediately call the police. Be a good witness and get the best description that you can to aid in the apprehension of the suspect and the recovery of your property.
  • Be careful when using ATMs. Accessing ATMs in remote locations, particularly after nightfall, could expose you to risk of robbery and personal injury.
  • Avoid working alone in a public-access building at night.
Now that staying safe at home and away from home have been covered, defending property will be the next topic. For more on safety, visit http://www.hocking.edu/campussafety/prevention.
Hocking College's LGBT Community Seeking Volunteers
OUTlook, Hocking's LGBT club, had their first meeting of the academic year on Thursday, September 12, 2013.

The club will be fundraising soon and they are looking for faculty or staff volunteers. The fundraiser will involve students and staff voting, with donations, to determine which member of OUTlook will dress up for a day. Each volunteer will have a jar labeled with his or her name and costume; the jar that has the most money at the end of the day determines who has to dress up and in what costume.

If you are willing to be a part of the fundraiser or have questions, contact Brittany Turner at turnerb10972@hocking.edu
