From the President

null The Heart of Hocking
With the exception of Graduation Day, the first week of
autumn semester is my favorite time of an academic year. The blend of uncertainty and excitement among our new students is almost palpable, as they find their way to class, and their way through life. It is an honor for all of us to support their journey.

Our new and returning students are not the only ones on a journey, however. Our campus community has charted a course to its own future, as articulated in our current 2010-2015 Strategic Plan. Over the next several issues of Verbatim, I hope to address several initiatives that are currently underway to fulfill the plan and position us well for a new five-year planning effort.

I hope that every member of the campus community looks back on this academic year and remembers it as a year where greater engagement, open communication, shared decision-making, and opportunities for employee fellowship created a firm foundation from which to serve our students in more efficient and effective ways. As I said in my opening address, these principles are truly the heart of our campus community.

Have a great year!

From the Provost:
Adventures in Education

Lucky
". . . I would write all over the walls when I was a kid. With markers, with crayons, with chalk - with anything I could get my hands on. I never knew where I got it from, I just did it. When I was seven, my parents gave me the most wonderful birthday present in the world, a chalkboard. I would rush home from school, get my army men and my sister's stuffed animals (they were my students), and I would teach them everything I learned in school that day. I wore that chalkboard out. When the wheels broke, my dad fixed them. When the base broke, he mounted the board on an old shopping cart. When the shopping cart broke, he mounted the board on the wall in the basement. And when the board finally broke, they got me a new one.

How lucky I am to have someone who helped me explore who I am.

Ahhh freshman year . . . it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. The freedom to live your life, the freedom to stay out all night and party, the freedom to miss your classes. Ahhh freedom. Well, I had a bit too much freedom and was placed on probation. This included a special meeting with my parents (who were truly pleasant about this) and the assignment of a new student advising rep, Mark Wilson. Now, I was a big man (still am), but this guy made me look like Gary Coleman. I will never forget his first words to me . . . "playtime is over, young brother - and I am here to make sure that you know that everyday!" I had to meet with Mark every week with completed homework, test grades, and study schedules. I missed an appointment once, and Mark was at my door the next morning. I hated him then, I love him now.

How lucky I am to have someone who did not give up on me.

When I was in college, I would study by going into empty classrooms and writing my notes on the board - once again pretending that I was teaching the material to an imaginary class. On the eve of a very scary Stats midterm, I was in one of the classrooms in Altgield Hall and my professor walked by. He saw me, came in and sat with me in the classroom. He talked with me for what seemed a long time, but was probably five minutes. I was so nervous. He said that I was a good student, and that he was always impressed with how comfortable I was speaking in the classroom. He asked me if I ever thought about teaching. Actually, at that point teaching was one of the few majors that I had not switched to in my two years there. Teaching?!? I never thought of that.

How lucky I am to have a caring educator who took time to get to know me . . .

So I close with a simple question to you . . .
HOW LUCKY ARE YOUR STUDENTS TO HAVE YOU?

nullHocking College Hosts Diversity and Inclusion Training
The One Hocking Diversity Without Division Alliance offered Diversity and Inclusion Training for Hocking College faculty, staff and external K-12 and two-year college participants, from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. on August 29, 2013 at the Inn at Hocking College.

The training enabled attendees to explore their own views, ideas and personal perspectives about diversity while being given some activities to help them recognize and understand more about this subject. The emphasis was geared toward applying gained knowledge and understanding to their professional life.

Toni C. King, Ph.D. was the keynote speaker for the event. Dr. King is an Associate Provost at Denison University where she also holds a joint appointment in Black Studies and Women's Studies. She has also taught at the State University of New York at Binghamton, and at Norfolk State University.

"Because of the college's earlier experiences, we decided to champion the cause of diversity and inclusion and create a new culture here at Hocking College," George Petrovay, Co-Chair of the Diveristy Without Division Alliance, said.

Several local organizations sponsored the training, including The Armistead Group, Holzer, L'Heureux Properties, Nelsonville Home and Savings Bank, Ohio University Credit Union and Rocky Outdoor Gear Store.

The "We Are One Hocking" initiative is an ongoing campaign of the Hocking College Diversity Without Division Alliance. The "One Hocking" initiative reinforces the emphasis on celebrating differences and providing a campus where all students are afforded a safe learning environment.

null Hocking College EMS Program Achieves Outstanding Pass Rates
The Hocking College Fire and Emergency Services program celebrated success after achieving outstanding pass rates on their recent certification exam.

Paramedic students achieved an 82 percent pass rate on their National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam, while EMT-Basic students also earned an 82 percent pass rate on their exam. Nationally, 72 percent passed the Paramedic exam, while 70 percent passed the EMT-Basic exam. Both exams were given on August 4, 2013.

"It was a true cooperation between the faculty and the students that enabled us to achieve this success rate," Curtis Martin, Hocking College EMS Coordinator, said.

The single most important goal of the NREMT is to offer assurance that EMS personnel providing treatment to patients at their highest moment of need are competent. Entry requirements for certification include completing a state-approved EMS education course, and passing the NREMT written and practical examinations. The exam consists of 13 separate stations testing the skills and knowledge of the student, ranging from cardiology, airway management and basic EMT skills.

Alumni Spotlight

Alumni Reaches Goal of Joining Peace Corps

Hocking College 2011 Alumni Matthew Fitzpatrick is taking a very unique and rewarding route, moving to Zambia, Africa for 27 months with the Peace Corps.

Before beginning the Forest Management program at Hocking, Fitzpatrick had no idea what it entailed. As he progressed through college, it seemed more and more logical for him to join the Peace Corps, Fitzpatrick said. "I have a passion for helping people and the environment as well as a great desire to live environment foreign from my own and the Peace Corps seems like a great organization to do these things."

During his time in Zambia, Fitzpatrick will work as a Forestry Agent. The tasks he will face are varied, but concentration is on increased food production and agribusiness. He will assist rural communities to adopt agricultural technologies and techniques that will lead to increased food production. In agribusiness, he will help community members to increase their incomes and income-generating opportunities.

Fitzpatrick believes his knowledge from his environmental degree helped him get in the Peace Corps. He spent most of his summers during school working for a nonprofit forest conservation organization, Western Wildlife Corridor in Cincinnati, Ohio.

His work in the Peace Corps seems vast and varied, and he will not know what all it will entail until he is there, said Fitzpatrick.
Mission

Hocking College provides a unique, innovative, and quality education in a supportive experience- based learning environment, preparing students for employment and transfer education opportunities, while teaching the value of lifelong learning, promoting diversity and developing citizens who are engaged in their local and global communities.
