Hocking Student Wins 2013 Global Dialogues Narrative Contest
Hocking College student, Ndeye Penda Leye of Senegal, was named one of the 20 international winners of the Global Dialogues National Narrative contest.

Nearly 13,000 entries were received from countries around the world. Participants had creative freedom to write fiction or non-fiction, create a video, play, poem or short story, but all had to be of the same subject: violence or HIV/AIDS and sexuality.

2013 is the first year youths from communities in the USA were invited to contribute.

Penda's story was written in excellent English, Penda's third language. Her fictional story was titled "Tears of an Angel" and it depicted the horrific mind games played by child sex abusers and the strong, exemplary response of a compassionate and loving parent.

Winners of the Global Dialogue's international contest are eligible to receive a cash prize and the top two or three entries worldwide will have the opportunity to see their stories made into films.

The Global Dialogues contest is an annual event. Global Dialogues strives to make sure youth's voices are heard through their own form of empowerment. Global Dialogues also pride their organization on the ability to promote global public health and societal well-being.

Moodle Upgrades
Moodle has recently been upgraded from version 2.2 to 2.4. The overall look and feel of Moodle has not changed, however, there are some features offered with the upgrade. The following are some highlights of the changes made:
  • Assignment tool - you no longer have an option from the course page to choose advanced uploading of files, online text, upload a single file or offline activity. You are given a single assignment choice that will contain all of the same settings as the old four, but they are now combined into one assignment module.
  • You can now make entire sections restricted based on assignments. Edit the summary of a section and you are given settings for restricting that section based on past assignments or other criteria.
  • New Activity chooser - This will give you all your assignment and resource options within a popup. When you click on an option you are given a brief description. The activity chooser can be turned on/off if you like by clicking the "Activity Chooser On/Off" link under the settings block.
If you have any questions or experience any issues contact James Rice at [email protected].

Reminder: EdMap Pilot Project Continues in Autumn 2013
Hocking College and EdMap will continue their pilot eTextbook project through autumn 2013. The pilot will provide transfer module students a cheaper, online option for textbooks. If the pilot is successful, Hocking College will adapt the policy campus-wide.

The college is still evaluating the results from the summer 2013 trial.

The fall semester pilot continues to be a trial of only the transfer module courses. No other programs will be affected during the trial stages.

EdMap provides many benefits to students and the environment. Etextbooks cost about half as much as their print counterpart. Students can save this money by simply paying a modest course fee, which will include their eTextbook. Along with saving money, eTextbooks are environmentally friendly and help prepare students for entrance into the high-tech world where we now live.

For a free trial, visit www.coursesmart.com and sign in with a student or faculty email.

Thanks to Everyone Working on Student Registrations!

As we welcome students to campus, a big thank you goes out to all of the faculty and staff who have been working to get students registered for autumn 2013.

The number of registered students is currently trending flat from last year, which is good, and a lot of hard work by a lot of people went in to making that happen. Kudos to all!
