Hocking College Partners with Circle Around the Square
Hocking College Culinary Arts program recently collaborated in a free summer art camp called "Circle Around the Square."

The program took place on the square in downtown Nelsonville for half of the program, while the other half was held at Hocking College. Barbara Campagnola, owner of the Nelsonville business Paper Circle, started the camp nine years ago after she learned the elementary and middle schools in Nelsonville did not offer art programming.

From July 15-26, 60 campers had the opportunity to learn, create, accomplish and be recognized. Each day the students worked at Hocking College in the kitchen with Chef Kathryn McGushin. They prepared their own lunch using ingredients from the Chesterhill Produce Auction or picked earlier in the day from the church garden. After lunch the students spent time at the college's fitness center swimming, climbing the climbing wall or playing ping pong.

Four high school graduates had the opportunity to intern with Circle Around the Square. They were each given a scholarship to Hocking College.

The campers' art work was displayed during the July Nelsonville Final Friday at the Stuart's Opera House.
School of Nursing Receives Funding of Perkins Grants
Through the Perkins Grant process, Hocking College's School of Nursing has received the funding to purchase equipment for the proposed Nursing Simulation Lab that is in development.

Two SimPad System 12" Patient Monitors were purchased that are compatible with the nursing lab's two medium-fidelity manikins. Simulation engages the learner in an active form of thinking and providing care to patients in the safety of a laboratory setting allowing practice of skills and clinical reasoning without risk to the patient.

This project aligns with Hocking College Strategic Plan by providing broad and innovative options to help the student achieve positive learning outcomes and meet their educational goals.

The Carl D. Perkins Mini-Grant funded 34 grants to faculty and staff, totaling approximately $138,000. Recipients received individual $5,000 mini-grants for projects emphasizing student learning and success. Applicants were required to complete paperwork detailing necessary supplies and budget for their project. The college hopes to continue a similar process for next year and award mini grants with the Perkins allocation. For more information, please contact Linda Howard at 740.753.6557

Other grants funded through this process will be featured in future Verbatim articles.

Mike Miltner, current program coordinator and instructor, brings a long and varied career in aquaculture to Hocking. "Hocking students get wet and get wet often, and after two years in this program have the passion, skills, sensibilities, and the requisite "slimy thumb" to do aquaculture elbow to elbow with seasoned fish growers in either state, federal, or private facilities," Milter said.
