Alumni Spotlight
Wildlife Management Alum Tries to Save Toledo Public Schools Program
Bill Hoefflin, alum of the Hocking College Wildlife Management program, is making tremendous efforts to keep the Wildlife Management Program in Toledo Public schools alive.
The Wildlife Management Program has been around for over 30 years, offering hands on experience in learning skills and basic natural resource knowledge.
According to Hoefflin, the enrollment in the program has been declining for years and is now down to just seven students. If students do not become more involved for the 2013-2014 school year, the program will be at risk.
Hoefflin is extremely passionate about his career and finds it to be very rewarding. "You are not taking tons of notes or carrying around a stack of text books. There is usually a short lesson, and then we immediately apply what we've covered with hands on experience" he stated.
Hocking College student Alex Kocher credits his excellence in his first year at Hocking to the Toledo Wildlife Management program. Most of what was covered in his initial semesters was familiar to him because of the high school program he was involved in. "It would be absolutely tragic if we lost that program," Kocher said, "because once students get started, they fall in love with it. You don't bury your head in a book; you are outside learning by doing things. It lets you go take the reins."
Kocher credits Hoefflin for bringing his knowledge and wealth of experience in the natural resource field directly to the classroom, workshop, or field study. "It helps so much that the teacher knows exactly what he is doing," Kocher said. "He has been out there working in the field and has done just about everything we cover."

Culinary Students Assist with Circle Round the Square
Circle Round the Square is an intensive summer-arts enrichment program for students in the Nelsonville-York City School District (NYCSD) presented by Paper Circle. This year, the children visited McClenaghan Center for Hospitality Training's Kitchens. Part of the camp will focus on teaching the Nelsonville-York area youth how to cook with local and sustainable ingredients. Hocking College students assisted with this program.
Roughly 60 children participated. Half of the children learned to cook while the others did activities such as theater workshops and arts and crafts. The Hocking College Foundation arranged for several scholarships to be granted to students for this program. Rhapsody Transformation: Restaurant Gets New Menu and New Look

McClenaghan Center for Hospitality Dean, Chef Alfonso Contrisciani reports that work on renovation and revamping of the Rhapsody restaurant is moving forward. He and his staff have started transforming the menu selections at the practicum training restaurant.
The new menu features local products from the area with portions that are bigger and focused more on casual style bistro fare. Price points are reduced and more appealing to local clientele.
Chef Contrisciani also reports that revenue is slowly climbing, and the trend is moving toward more walk-in business. Customer feedback is great thus far.
Chef Contrisciani states that the renovation is key to the restaurant's continued success and his goal of $500,000 in sales next year.
The final new lunch and dinner menus are currently being developed as well as a bar menu. Look for further updates as renovation continues.

Register today to receive their regular e-newsletter. Here's an article that appeared in their recent issue: Landing Your First Professional Job: It's About More Than Getting an Interview
Finding a job is not as easy as handing in a resume and waiting to be called for an interview. In this competitive market, employers are seeking the most skilled and confident people to fill their open positions. How do you gain this confidence? For recent graduates new to the professional job scene, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, start sooner rather than later. Nina Mattson, Coordinator of Career Services at Montgomery County Community College, emphasizes the importance of getting work experience during college. In other words, don't wait until you have a degree to put those skills you are learning into action. In resumes, as well as during job interviews, Mattson encourages recent grads to interpret past experiences in ways that convey value. Describing how you applied what you learned in college will definitely elevate your status in the mind of the employer. "While they may have been small cogs in the wheel -- for example, delivering pizzas or answering the telephone -- emphasizing an awareness of overall operations is bound to make a good impression," Mattson shares. Also, you must come to the interview prepared. Tara Wainwright, Perkins/KEYS Advisor at the College, says it is important to know the ins and outs of a company before you even set foot in the interview office. "It's embarrassing if you know nothing about the place you're applying to," hints Wainwright. By taking the time to research, you can tailor your interview responses to better communicate how your skills, talents and values are a match for the company. But don't just list your talents; show them. "If you say you're a good communicator or you're comfortable with technology, you have to have proof," Wainwright said. Both she and Mattson suggest bringing several concrete examples that demonstrate, specifically, how your skills enhanced a company, service or product. The key is to focus on results and accomplishments. Both career service professionals also stress the importance of highlighting contemporary skills, especially proficiency with emerging technologies and social media. Most importantly, new jobseekers need to have a positive attitude! Wainwright suggests that instead of looking at this process as a "job search," consider it your personal "campaign." "Using the term 'campaign' brings to light the importance of branding yourself, creating your professional image, and marketing your greatness to others. It also includes the fact that you need to network, talk to people, and get the word out about your skills and your interest in working," explains Wainwright, who learned about the idea from Career Coach and Author Jay Block. Campaign materials can include your resume, online presence and profiles, and portfolio, among other materials. "It's almost like a dating website profile; you are putting together your description for someone to be interested in you!" shares Wainwright. She also points out that the process of looking for a job is a skill-set in itself -- one that none of us is taught. "New job seekers need to learn the necessary skills to conduct a successful campaign. On-the-job skills are not enough," she says.

HC Learning Program to be Highlighted at ACCT Conference
The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) is working with the Ohio Association of Community Colleges (OACC) on a video about the development of student success and completion efforts in Ohio's community colleges, and a Hocking College contextualized learning program will be included.
The developmental Fire Science/English contextualized learning course started by Scott Mong, Public Safety Commander, and Kathy Pittman, Associate Professor, has enjoyed great success since its start four years ago. This program uses high interest Fire Science materials to help developmental Fire Science students improve their reading and writing skills. Data results indicate that for students who attend both the technical and the English class consistently, 92 percent of them will be successful in passing the developmental English course.
The ACCT/OACC video is a part of the Governance Institute for Student Success initiative that was piloted with the governance boards of Ohio's community colleges in 2010. This video will debut at ACCT's annual conference in October 2013, and also will be available on the websites of OACC and ACCT.
