Hocking College Sponsors First Annual College Readiness Forum
On Tuesday, April 9, 2013, Hocking College sponsored the first annual College Readiness Forum with a focus on readiness in reading and writing. One of the major goals of the forum was to provide an opportunity for collaboration and sharing of ideas to better meet the academic needs of the underprepared college student.

The event took place at the Inn at Hocking College and provided a lunch prepared and served by the Culinary Arts students. More than 50 high school and college educators came prepared to discuss problems and solutions for incoming college students. A total of 14 high schools and four colleges were represented.

Presenters included Dr. Sherrie Gradin from Ohio University English Department, Deb Nickles from Ohio University Chillicothe campus, Kathy Pittman with Hocking College ABIT faculty and Tami Hartman from Eastland-Fairfield Career Center.

The event was organized by Arts, Business and Information Technology (ABIT) Dean Jeff Daubenmire, ABIT Associate Dean Sarah Parker-Clever, English faculty Sue Fletcher and Professional Development Director Linda Deeds. It also received support from Ohio University Appalachian Writing Project. Special thanks to all of the Hocking College faculty and staff that participated and helped make this event a success!

Native Youth Olympics: Telling the Story
Native Youth Olympics: Telling the Story
Alumnus Leads Alaskan Competitors to the Gold
Brian Northup, a native of Bidwell, Ohio, is a 2012 Hocking College alumnus from the Fitness Management program. Northup has had quite an adventure since his graduation from Hocking College. When his wife accepted a teaching job in Alaska, he had to find a unique way to utilize his skills. Living in a village of Eskimos is intensely different from roaming the hills of Hocking College.

While in Alaska, Northup was asked to coach the school's athletic teams for the Native Youth Olympics (NYO), a culturally prominent event taking place annually in Anchorage. The events are relevant to Alaskan heritage including some interesting athletic challenges like the seal hop and Alaskan high kick. See the video above for information about the NYO.

"It feels great that I'm making a difference and changing lives. This is crazy, and I love it!" Northup said in an email to Bill Finnearty, one of his former instructors at Hocking College.

The teams Northup coached trained all year for the competition. The weekend of April 5-7, 2013, Northup's team competed in a total of 10 events, broken down by gender and age groups. The junior high team placed second, while the high school team won first overall.

"My biggest satisfactions come from stories like yours. I need not tell you how proud I am of you. Keep living the dream and thank you again; this is why I teach," Finnearty replied to Northup in an email after hearing about the students' success at NYO.

After the competition, Northup was asked to coach basketball. He looks forward to working with the school's students again and continues to keep in contact with his favorite instructors at Hocking College.

The program will offer different modules to participants that will prepare them for future certification courses by teaching concepts in the classroom and applying their skill sets in various training exercises.

The Ohio Youth Fire and EMS Training Academy is sponsored by the Ohio State Firefighters' Associations Youth Programs Committee. For more information, please visit www.ohioyouthfire.org, or contact Vicki Miller at 740.685.1053.

Instructor Volunteers Time to Help Girl Scouts

On Saturday April 13, Police Science instructor Larry Hatem volunteered to help Girl Scout Troop 2275 from Hocking County earn their Secret Agent Badge. During his time with the Girls Scouts, Hatem taught the girls about crime scene procedures, taking fingerprints and cast moldings.

Hatem also set up a "crime scene" for them to collect evidence using the proper procedures he taught them earlier in the day. After their investigation, they had the opportunity to watch the 36-Hour Fire class in the burn building. The girls ended the day saying, "This was the best day ever!" and "Mr. Hatem is really cool!" Great job, Larry, and April Maffin sends her thanks for volunteering his time to help her Girl Scout troop.
