Perez Wins "Dancing with the Athens Stars"
Congratulations to Nate Perez, Office Coordinator at the Student Center, who won the Dancing with the Athens Stars competition on April 13 at Stuart's Opera. Perez competed against 10 local celebrities in the fourth annual Dancing with the Athens Stars competition, a fundraiser for the American Red Cross of Southeastern Ohio.

The 10 local celebrities had no experience in dance and were paired with professional performers to show them the ropes. Perez performed a swing dance with professional partner Jane Tomkins. Perez and Tomkins made the final round as the Judge's Choice and were then voted to return for next year's show.

"The dance moves demonstrated bordered on acrobatics as Nate threw Jane in the air, flipping and twisting his way through the most entertaining night of the year," Giles Lee, Hocking College Director of Co-Curricular Activities and one of the judges in the competition, commented.
"Nate Knows" Intro Video

To win the competition, participants had to raise the most money for the American Red Cross. Guests received a single ballot with the purchase of their ticket, but were able to cast another vote in a different round with the purchase of another for $10. All proceeds from the event went to the American Red Cross disaster services provided in Athens, Gallia, Meigs and Vinton counties.

Great job also to our Broadcast Production and Engineering students who shot the introduction videos for all the contestants!  See Nate's video above.

"Since I've been around so many years, a lot of people know me here in town, on and off duty. I have a good relationship with everybody - other than the criminals," Kurtz said.

Be Mindful of Cancer Warning Signs

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, although it may be the most preventable. The best way to stay informed is to be aware of skin type, time spent outdoors and personal or family history. Be aware of the warning signs, which may include red, irritated patches on the skin, shiny bumps of any color or sore bumps that itch, bleed, crust over and repeat the cycle.

Men over age 65 are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Women 55 and older are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Be aware of the warning signs that may suggest a problem. Talk to a physician immediately if a concern appears.

For more information, see the attached flyers about skin cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer warning signs, from our healthcare provider, Anthem.

Risk Reporter Features Faculty Member

The Church Mutual Insurance tri-annual newsletter, Risk Reporter, recently featured a question and answer article with the Hocking College National Ranger Training Institute coordinating instructor, Bill DeWeese. The issue focused on aspects of safety in schools, weapons training and risks accompanying school security.

"The risk of a campus being attacked is statistically very rare, plus, you can't assume that having an armed officer on-site guarantees that bad things won't happen. But an armed officer is like a fire extinguisher - better to have it and not need it than vice versa," DeWeese said.

In DeWeese's opinion, qualifications for a school safety officer need to include professional law enforcement training, with 400-800 hours at the academy, field experience and refresher training. Officers are trained to make decisions quickly and decisively. For more information, see the Risk Reporter
