Alumnus Leads Alaskan Competitors to the Gold

Brian Northup, a native of Bidwell, Ohio, is a 2012 Hocking College alumnus from the Fitness Management program. Northup has had quite an adventure since his graduation from Hocking College. When his wife accepted a teaching job in Alaska, he had to find a unique way to utilize his skills. Living in a village of Eskimos is intensely different from roaming the hills of Hocking College.

While in Alaska, Northup was asked to coach the school's athletic teams for the Native Youth Olympics (NYO), a culturally prominent event taking place annually in Anchorage. The events are relevant to Alaskan heritage including some interesting athletic challenges like the seal hop and Alaskan high kick. See the video below for information about the NYO.

"It feels great that I'm making a difference and changing lives. This is crazy, and I love it!" Northup said in an email to Bill Finnearty, one of his former instructors at Hocking College.

The teams Northup coached trained all year for the competition. The weekend of April 5-7, 2013, Northup's team competed in a total of 10 events, broken down by gender and age groups. The junior high team placed second, while the high school team won first overall.

"My biggest satisfactions come from stories like yours. I need not tell you how proud I am of you. Keep living the dream and thank you again; this is why I teach," Finnearty replied to Northup in an email after hearing about the students' success at NYO.

After the competition, Northup was asked to coach basketball. He looks forward to working with the school's students again and continues to keep in contact with his favorite instructors at Hocking College.

Public Safety Degree Leads to Local Career

Sgt. Ed Kurtz has been affil-iated with the Nelson-ville Police Department for almost 24 years. A 1989 grad-uate of the Police Science program at Hocking College, Kurtz exhibited true potential for a public safety career.

Kurtz grew up in a family that was accustomed to police work. His father was a deputy for the Marietta Police Department, and he knew that his communication skills and ability to interact with others would prove successful in a public safety services career.
"Since I've been around so many years, a lot of people know me here in town, on and off duty. I have a good relationship with everybody - other than the criminals," Kurtz said.

Kurtz has held a supervisory role at the Nelsonville Police Department since 1995, with his main role being Chief of Police. Kurtz currently works part-time and spends his spare time with his wife, son and stepdaughter. For more information, please see the Athens Messenger profile.

Music Students Create Video Sequence "Robbins Crossing"

Students in the Hocking College School of Music are creating a new series of videos entitled "Robbins Crossing" for their Music Business Synthesis class. The project requires students to create a music video series showcasing artists in a unique way.

Similar to "Black Cab Sessions," a video series based in London where artists performed an original song while cruising the streets of the city in a black taxi-cab, the students will create a sequence of videos showcasing artists in a regional setting. The series will feature five episodes, each with different touring artists performing four to five songs in the nineteenth century historic settlement of Robbins Crossing on the Hocking College Campus.

The artists scheduled to participate in season one of the Robbins Crossing web series are City Lights, Schematic, Squid the Whale, Envoi and Adam Remnant of Southeast Engine. Each artist is a regionally and/or nationally touring act with a strong fan base. The purpose of the project is to gain understanding of the music industry by participating in the production of a music video sequence that could possibly attract national appeal.

"I wanted students to realize they can utilize the surroundings that we have - a really cool unique village on campus - to develop something that can have regional and national traction," instructor Josh Antonuccio said.

Natural Resources Students Help Clear Trees in Trimble Township Community Forest

Hocking College students from Jonathon Hutchinson's Basic Chainsaw Operations class helped clear three trees blocking the Trimble Township Community Forest walking path. The trees have been down since the Super Derecho storm that hit in the summer of 2012.

Joe Brehm of Rural Action realized this was not a job that could be done easily. He invited Hutchinson's class to utilize the work as a learning opportunity. The students cleared a 100-year-old white oak and two smaller red oaks.

Once the trees were clear, the students used the white oak to build a bench. It is now positioned on a hilltop overlooking the city of Glouster. For more information, please read the full article in the Logan Daily News
