 Culinary Arts Students Take Gold at ACF Knowledge Bowl
Hocking College recently sent a team of six Culinary Arts students to the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Northeast Regional Conference in Verona, New York from March 17-20. During the conference, the team participated in the ACF Knowledge Bowl, a competition much like Jeopardy where participants are quizzed on culinary terms, history, classical methods of cooking, science of ingredients and ingredient identification.
Team coach Chef Kate McGushin led the team to place second out of nine teams in the regional finals. This is the first team from Hocking College to compete in 10 years. The first place winners were last year's first prize team, but Hocking gave them a run for their money.

Employee Excellence Awards Committee Accepting Nominations
Nominations for employees exhibiting excellence in instruction, vocation and community service are now being accepted. Applications should be submitted to the Awards Committee c/o Joe Wakeman by 5 p.m. on April 2, 2013 in Oakley 210, or by electronic submission at wakemanj@hocking.edu.
The Excellence in Instruction Award is given to the nominee that exemplifies the best practices of teaching performance and student advising/counseling. The Excellence in Service Award is given to a non-instructional employee who exhibits exceptional service in their job performance, professionalism and interpersonal skills. The Curtis Miles Service Award is given to the employee that has completed a service project that greatly benefits the community.
Previous recipients will select winners in late April. The awards will be announced at the all staff luncheon on the Monday of autumn Start Week. For more information, contact Joe Wakeman.

Music Students Attend South by Southwest
Twenty music students, led by instructor Josh Antonuccio, attended South by Southwest, the largest music industry conference in the US, from March 12-17 in Austin, Texas. This year Hocking College students experienced a keynote address by a legend in the music industry, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana fame, who offered a poignant and personal testimony of the road to artistic and commercial success.
During the conference, student attendees gained exclusive access to panel discussions, industry surveys, one-on-one mentoring sessions with music industry professionals, as well as interviews with industry notables including Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, famed record label mogul Clive Davis, My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Hip Hop sensation 50 Cent and international superstar Depeche Mode.
South by Southwest showcased thousands of musical acts, from newly formed bands to megastars, including Prince, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Justin Timberlake and Green Day. In many cases Hocking students spent time with the artists before or after the shows, getting a chance to meet and converse with them in the conference center.
"Thank you so much for this opportunity," Gianni Macioci, Hocking College music student, said. "For anyone who is a music student, be prepared to experience a life-changing event that will motivate you to pursue a career in the music industry."

Perez to Participate in "Dancing with the Athens Stars"
On April 13 at Stuart's Opera House, Student Center Office Coordinator Nate Perez, will participate in the fourth annual Dancing with the Athens Stars competition, a fundraiser for the American Red Cross of Southeastern Ohio. Perez will be dancing with professional partner Jane Tomkins in hopes of earning the Dancing with the Stars title.
Hocking College Broadcast students will record the event and create dance videos for each contestant as a part of their class project. The winner of the competition will be the participant who raises the most money for the American Red Cross. Votes can be cast for each dancer at the cost of $10, and will count toward the total proceeds for the American Red Cross.

PSS Holds Summer Peace Officer Academy
The Hocking College School of Public Safety Services will conduct Peace Officer Basic Academy May 13, 2013 - August 16, 2013. Applications will be accepted through May 1, 2013. Anyone interested in the academy must be 18 years of age, have no felony record and must possess a valid Ohio driver's license.
Students will be provided classroom materials including a laptop computer and uniform clothing. Upon successful completion, students will qualify for Ohio Peace Officer status in accordance with the Ohio Peace Officer Commission and receive 18 college credit hours toward an Associate Degree in Police Science Technology at Hocking College. Alumni Spotlight 
Alum Promoted to Park Position
Robin Kalish, a veteran park ranger and Hocking College alumnus, was named Superintendent of Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina in February 2013. "Robin brings solid ranger experience and a profound affection for our natural resources to the job as superintendent at Hanging Rock State Park," Lewis Ledford, State Parks Director said. "She is a good choice to lead one of our oldest and most beloved state parks as it meets future challenges."
Her job responsibilities as a superintendent include staffing, training, law enforcement, visitor services, natural resource protection and environmental education. As the superintendent, she is the chief of operations and administration at Hanging Rock State Park.
In 1998, Kalish graduated from Hocking College with an Associate's of Ranger Services. Her previous employment included several jobs in the Ohio State Parks System, Hocking County Sherriff's Department and seasonal staffing at Jordan Lake. Kalish holds certifications in environmental education and intermediate law enforcement and credits her success to her education at Hocking College.
Regarding her new position, Kalish said, "I love Hocking College and I want the students to see what they can do with their career if they stick to it!"

Veterans' Memorial Landscaping Expansion Begins
Starting today March 25, 2013, Andy Freeman, Landscape Management Program Coordinating Instructor, and his students will begin the first phase of developing the SSG Curtis "Moose" Oakes Veterans' Memorial Garden expansion. Additionally, the Heavy Equipment program will begin digging holes to jump start the project.
Several large trees will be delivered, including two 25 feet Green Pillar Oaks. The trees will be planted during the week in front of Light Hall. An email from Campus Police will let faculty, staff and students know which parking lots will be closed during the expansion project.

ABIT Hosts Retirement Party
The department of Arts, Business and Information Technology is hosting a retirement party in the Student Center Multiplex on Monday, April 15th from 1-2:30 p.m. in honor of the following instructors: Suzanne Knauerhause, Ruth Reilly, Jeff Sawyer, Merilynne Smith, Barbara Sunderlin, Harry Tompkins and Jim Wallace.  Collegiate Job Fair to be Held
Hocking College will host the 2013 Collegiate Job Fair Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Center Multiplex. The Job Fair is open to all students and alumni.
The event will allow students to talk to businesses about potential employment opportunities. Students are encouraged to bring an updated resume and be prepared to speak with representatives about their qualifications and interests.

Reminder: Hocking College Hosts Eighth Annual Glass Invitational
Hocking College Art, Design and Marketing program will host the 2013 Eighth Annual Glass Invitational featuring the artwork of Robin and Julia Rogers.
The Glass Invitational begins Thursday, March 28, 2013, with the Artists' Lecture from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Light Hall, room 195. Following the lecture, glassblowing demonstrations will be held in the Visual Arts Center, room 107, from 1 - 3 p.m. Both are open to the public.
On Friday, March 29, the Hocking College Art Gallery will host the Glass Invitational exhibition opening reception from 6 - 9 p.m. for Final Friday on Nelsonville's Historic Square. The Rogers' work will be displayed from March 29-April 21 at the Art Gallery.
Robin began his career in 1998 at the Columbus College of Art and Design, where he received his Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Glass and Painting. His previous positions include being a studio assistant, woodshop assistant and glassblowing instructor.
Julia's career began in 1996 at Oregon State University, where she studied Fine Art. After finishing her Bachelor's of Fine Arts at Southern Illinois University, Julia began teaching sculpting and glassblowing at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington.
Robin and Julia Rogers first met in western Montana, where their paths crossed teaching glassblowing. After spending time together creating art, the duo decided to open Cloud Cap Glass in 2000, an art studio where they both enjoyed creating and selling their pieces. Robin then received his Master's of Fine Arts in Glass and New Media from Southern Illinois University in 2008, and Julia received her Master's of Fine Arts from Bowling Green University in 2010.
After 10 years of moving from state to state together, the couple began creating artwork collaboratively. Robin is currently the co-owner of Nomadic Glass, and Julia is an instructor at Tidewater Community College, where she teaches Beginning Glassblowing. Reminder: Health and Nursing Programs Hold Annual Community Health Fair
The Hocking College School of Health and Nursing is hosting the thirteenth annual free Community Health Fair on April 16, 2013 in the Student Center Multiplex from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The event is planned, researched and organized by students in the Nursing, Physical Therapy Assistant, Medical Assistant, Fitness Management and Dietary Management programs. All services are free. Students will measure blood sugar and blood pressure, target heart rate/flexibility, body fat ratios and stress levels.
Information supporting the relationship of cold prevention and hand washing, smokeless tobacco and smoking cessation, drug and alcohol abuse, energy drinks, emotional care, depression and suicide, sexually transmitted diseases, rape, healthy diets, and cancer screening and prevention will also be presented.
A used book sale and raffles will be held throughout the day, with both proceeds donated to funding the Community Health Fair. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day. Limited free parking will be offered to visitors in front of the Hocking College Student Center.

Stop Child Abuse: Wear Blue to Spread Awareness
Athens County Children's Services is spreading awareness about Child Abuse Prevention. On Wednesday, April 10, 2013, residents of Athens County and the Hocking College community are encouraged to wear blue to demonstrate their support of child safety and protection.
In 2012, 1,495 child abuse and neglect reports were received in Athens County alone. The best way to prevent abuse and neglect is to spread awareness and an attitude of non-tolerance. Over 2,000 professionals took a stand and chose to wear blue in 2011. Join the effort this April by wearing blue and standing against child abuse. Registration and Financial Aid Reminders
Advising for summer and autumn 2013 semesters begins April 1, 2013. Priority registration for current students is from April 8 - 10, and open registration starts April 11, 2013. QuickStart for new summer 2013 students will be held April 11.
In order to register for classes, a student's account must have a zero balance (meaning no previous balance is owed) and the student must have a payment method in place at the time of registration.
Payment method can be any of the following:
- Pay the balance in full
- Have full financial aid in place to cover all charges (including on campus housing/meals, if applicable)/financial aid authorization showing an estimated amount of financial aid anticipated
- Have full third party coverage. Signed voucher from sponsor required
- Enroll in the Hocking College Payment Plan with a $30 non-refundable fee
- Combination of the above
Students who are planning to attend summer term and need financial aid are required to complete and return the Summer Financial Aid Form to be evaluated for financial aid. Students should return the form to the Financial Aid Walk-Up desk in Light Hall Student Services Concourse.

Wayne National Hosts Amphibian Discovery
On Saturday, April 6, 2013, the Wayne National Forest will host Wild Weekend Discovery on the amazing world of amphibians. Children will learn about frogs, salamanders, and their habitats.
Wild Weekend Discovery is held at the Wayne National Forest Headquarters located off US Highway 33 between Nelsonville and The Plains. This free program is designed for children ages 6-11. Two one-hour sessions are available at 10 a.m. and noon, with only 15 seats per slot.

 Anthem Offers ConditionCare and Tips to Stay Healthy
Anthem is offering a new program called ConditionCare, already covered in employee benefits, that includes a health screening, follow-up calls, a toll-free number for a nurse and educational materials utilized in maintaining health goals. ConditionCare takes active steps to maintain heart health and prevent coronary artery disease, an incurable illness influenced by years of bad cholesterol, high blood pressure and unhealthy habits.
Children are also practicing bad habits that could lead to this disease later in life. Childhood obesity is increasing at a shocking rate. According to Anthem, childhood obesity rates have nearly tripled in the last 30 years. The good news is there are ways to ensure healthy living. Some suggestions provided by Athem include planning a daily menu, limiting portions and scheduling an hour of physical activity each day.

Reminder: Ohio Benefit Bank Training to be Held
Hocking College has partnered with the Ohio Benefit Bank to support students outside of their academic lives. The Ohio Benefit Bank is a program of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, Ohio's largest charitable response to hunger.
The Ohio Benefit Bank provides programs and resources that help hundreds of thousands of Ohioans fight hunger and poverty. Through the Ohio Benefit Bank, students will be able to access applications for 26 different work supports and tax credits including: food assistance, cash assistance, utility assistance, childcare assistance, veterans' education benefits and free tax filing.
The possibilities with this new partnership are broad and include: increasing enrollment, increasing retention rates and strengthening relationships with our students and community. Many students may qualify for assistance but are not taking advantage of the benefits available.
Training for this program was over spring break, and included many people from academic units and student affairs throughout the college. If you have a student in need of any assistance in this area, please direct them to contact their student affairs coordinator. Another training will be held April 5 from 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. with a break for lunch. Please contact Dr. Carl Bridges, Provost, if you are interested in attending.

Reminder: Fitness Management Hosts First Annual Pump & Run and 5 K
Hocking College Fitness Management Program is inviting everyone to participate in the first ever Pump & Run event on Saturday, April 6, 2013. The cost for Hocking College students, alumni and employees is $10 per participant. The cost is $15 for the non-Hocking community. Registration must be completed by March 27 to participate.
Participants will perform a maximum number of bench press repetitions according to their percent body weight based on age, and compete in a 1.5-mile run. Each repetition will result in a 10 second reduction from the overall 1.5-mile run time. Pump & Run groups will be separated by age, gender and weight.
The Fitness Management program will also host their first annual 5K race an April 6. The 5K is a traditional 3.1 mile course. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the race starts at 9 a.m. Participants are categorized by age groups, with awards presented to the top three male and female participants in each group. The top three runners will receive a trophy or plaque, and all participants receive a commemorative t-shirt upon registration.

| The Learning Center Excels on Performance Report
The TRIO Student Support Service, The Learning Center (TLC), recently submitted their annual performance report to the Ohio Department of Education. Over the course of the 2011/2012 academic school year, TLC served 190 Hocking College students, helping 92 percent of them maintain good academic standing.
Including students who transferred to a four-year college, 77 percent of students using the TLC stayed in school to complete another academic year. The TRIO program requires that 12 percent of students graduate with an associate's degree within four years. At Hocking, the TLC program produced a 43 percent graduation rate.
