Hocking College Hosts Eighth Annual Glass Invitational
Hocking College Art, Design and Marketing program will host the 2013 Eighth Annual Glass Invitational featuring the artwork of Robin and Julia Rogers.

The Glass Invitational begins Thursday, March 28, 2013, with the Artists' Lecture from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Light Hall, room 195. Following the lecture, glassblowing demonstrations will be held in the Visual Arts Center, room 107, from 1 - 3 p.m. Both are open to the public.

On Friday, March 29, the Hocking College Art Gallery will host the Glass Invitational exhibition opening reception from 6 - 9 p.m. for Final Friday on Nelsonville's Historic Square. The Rogers' work will be displayed from March 29-April 21 at the Art Gallery.

Robin began his career in 1998 at the Columbus College of Art and Design, where he received his Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Glass and Painting. His previous positions include being a studio assistant, woodshop assistant and glassblowing instructor.

Julia's career began in 1996 at Oregon State University, where she studied Fine Art. After finishing her Bachelor's of Fine Arts at Southern Illinois University, Julia began teaching sculpting and glassblowing at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington.

Robin and Julia Rogers first met in western Montana, where their paths crossed teaching glassblowing. After spending time together creating art, the duo decided to open Cloud Cap Glass in 2000, an art studio where they both enjoyed creating and selling their pieces.
Robin then received his Master's of Fine Arts in Glass and New Media from Southern Illinois University in 2008, and Julia received her Master's of Fine Arts from Bowling Green University in 2010.

After 10 years of moving from state to state together, the couple began creating artwork collaboratively. Robin is currently the co-owner of Nomadic Glass, and Julia is an instructor at Tidewater Community College, where she teaches Beginning Glassblowing. For more information on the Rogers' artwork, please visit their website at
Music Students Create Video Sequence "Robbins Crossing"
Students in the Hocking College School of Music are creating a new series of videos entitled "Robbins Crossing" for their Music Business Synthesis class. The project requires students to create a music video series showcasing artists in a unique way.

Similar to "Black Cab Sessions," a video series based in London where artists performed an original song while cruising the streets of the city in a black taxi-cab, the students will create a sequence of videos showcasing artists in a regional setting. The series will feature five episodes, each with different touring artists performing four to five songs in the nineteenth century historic settlement of Robbins Crossing on the Hocking College Campus.

The artists scheduled to participate in season one of the Robbins Crossing web series are City Lights, Schematic, Squid the Whale, Envoi and Adam Remnant of Southeast Engine. Each artist is a regionally and/or nationally touring act with a strong fan base. The purpose of the project is to gain understanding of the music industry by participating in the production of a music video sequence that could possibly attract national appeal.

"I wanted students to realize they can utilize the surroundings that we have - a really cool unique village on campus - to develop something that can have regional and national traction," instructor Josh Antonuccio said.

Marketing Campaign Wins National Awards
Hocking College Marketing and Public Relations Director Laura Alloway recently attended the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) conference in Chicago, Illinois and received two national and two regional awards for college marketing. The NCMPR event was held March 10-13, 2013 at the Fairmont Hotel Chicago.

NCMPR is the national organization for marketing, communications and public relations for two-year educational institutions. The conference featured speakers, workshops, and roundtable discussions to provide insight into current issues facing two-year marketing and public relations departments. The Paragon Awards, given at a ceremony during the conference, are national-level awards for different categories relating to marketing and public relations. Each category has a bronze, silver and gold award with gold being the highest achievement. This year, NCMPR received more than 1,700 Paragon entries from over 260 schools.

Hocking College was awarded the gold Paragon Award for Banners and Outdoor Media and a second gold Paragon for Radio Advertisement/PSA, Single.  While at the conference, the NCMPR District 3 also held their regional Medallion Awards ceremony, and Hocking College took the gold Medallion Award for Outdoor Advertising and a second gold Medallion Award for Radio Advertisement/PSA, Single.  The awards were for the college's "Apply Your Passion" campaign, launched in 2011-12.

"It is an honor to be recognized at the national level by our peers for the quality of our work. Hocking College is one of only two colleges throughout the United States who received two gold Paragon awards. We are proud to have accomplished this achievement by sharing the powerful message of choosing a Hocking College education," Alloway said.

Everyday Activity Leads to Health Lifestyle
Could taking the stairs help maintain a healthy lifestyle? The March 2013 IMPACT on Wellness Newsletter suggests increasing everyday activity could lead to the same health benefits as regular exercise.

A study of 6,000 Americans suggests that taking the stairs, taking longer walks and simple tasks like raking leaves could lead to improved health outcomes such as preventing metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. For more information on living healthy, visit www.MyIMPACTSolution.com.

Natural Resources Students Help Clear Trees in Trimble Township Community Forest

Hocking College students from Jonathon Hutchinson's Basic Chainsaw Operations class helped clear three trees blocking the Trimble Township Community Forest walking path. The trees have been down since the Super Derecho storm that hit in the summer of 2012.

Joe Brehm of Rural Action realized this was not a job that could be done easily. He invited Hutchinson's class to utilize the work as a learning opportunity. The students cleared a 100-year-old white oak and two smaller red oaks.

Once the trees were clear, the students used the white oak to build a bench. It is now positioned on a hilltop overlooking the city of Glouster. For more information, please read the full article in the Logan Daily News.

Thanks for your hard work in taking care of our community!

Faculty Hosts Ohio Society of Fire Services Instructors Training at Hocking

Scott Mong, Fire and Emergency Services Program Commander, and Hocking instructors hosted the Ohio Society of Fire Service Instructors Training Conference at Hocking College on March 2, 2013. The conference provides updates concerning different aspects of fire training along with workshops designed to train the instructors.

Fire instructors from all over Southeast Ohio represent two-year colleges and Joint Vocational Schools that have fire-training programs. Attendees gain continuing education credit for attending the conference.

Hocking is one of five places in the state that hosts this conference, allowing the Fire and Emergency Services program the opportunity to demonstrate their programs and training resources to other institutions. This year, Mong was commended on Hocking College's training resources made available for student learning.

Congratulations on a job well done!
