Dream Job: Hocking College Inspires Educational Career

Jen (Carr) Fulwider has a passion for teaching that she credits to her time at Hocking College.

Fulwider graduated in 1997 from the Hocking College Interpretation Services program. Originally from Toledo, Fulwider found Hocking College to be a fit and decided to attend even though it was four hours away from home.

After graduating from Hocking, she continued her education to attain her Bachelor's Degree in Outdoor Education at the University of Toledo. Upon graduation, Fulwider decided to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher and went on to complete her Master's Degree in Special Education.

"I am now a Special Education teacher," Fulwider said, "I've been in my dream job for 10 years now!"

A strong educational foundation at Hocking gave Fulwider her start. "I credit my love of education to my two years at Hocking and to the best instructors!" Fulwider commented. "While teaching at my day job and at the collegiate level, I aspire to give my students the honest truth about the field of education and the real world, just as those angels did for me at Hocking."

She is currently working on her Education Specialist Degree and teaching part time at a university. She is scheduled to start her Ph.D. this fall.

"I can't say enough (about) how much my experiences at Hocking changed me, challenged me, and inspired me to truly go after my dreams," Fulwider said. "While I may not be in the Natural Resources field, those two years at Hocking College were the best times of my younger life!"

Massage Therapy Program Leads to Business Ownership

Service is what led Stephanie Truitt to own and operate a business just 10 years after graduating from Hocking College. Truitt provides service to nearly 800 people in need of massage therapy.

Truitt graduated from Hocking College in 2001 with an Associate's Degree in Massage Therapy / Business Management. "I became a licensed massage therapist and worked in several different settings including full service day spa, health club and chiropractor's office," Truitt said.

In July 2011, Truitt opened her own massage studio in downtown Chillicothe, Ohio named Your Place or Mine Massage Company. "I now employ three licensed massage therapists, and I have a clientele that has grown to nearly 800 people in 15 months' time," Truitt said.

Giving back to the community holds a special place in Truitt's heart. "I was a surrogate mother to a couple in Georgia in 2009," Truitt said. "My husband and I have volunteered with many groups during our marriage as well, including Army Family Readiness Group, American Legion Baseball, March of Dimes and Relay for Life."

Without the skills learned from Hocking's Massage Therapy and Business Management programs, the dream of owning a massage therapy business may not have been possible for Truitt.

Smile-a-thon 2013
Smile-a-thon 2013

The Hocking College Smile-A-Thon, hosted by the Hocking College Foundation, took place February 26-28. During the event, students had the opportunity to thank someone in the Hocking College community by sending them a "smiley-face" card. The event was prompted by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)'s natio

nal Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day initiative going on across college campuses nationwide.

Food and drinks were provided all day on Thursday, February 28 in the Student Center Lobby. Students were encouraged to donate a dollar to the student emergency fund and sign a "Random Acts of Kindness" pledge. The pledge was signed by 284 people, while 270 "smiley-face" cards were distributed across campus.

Overall, the event was a success, compiling $666 for the student emergency fund. "The Smile-a-Thon was more successful than we ever imagined! Students, faculty and staff enjoyed a day full of positive experiences: good food, giving and receiving thanks, pledging random acts of kindness and lots and lots of smiles!"  Libby Villavicencio, Hocking College Foundation Executive Director, said.

Nick Hillard was the winner of the gumball estimate. Nick is a student in the Natural Resources Law Enforcement program, and he won a $25 gift card to the Rocky Outlet Store. The gumballs represented the number of scholarships awarded to Hocking College students annually. Nick's guess was 1,444, and the correct answer was 1,470. The awards add up to $771,750 in scholarships annually.

Care Project 3 Seeking Female Volunteers

The human papillomavirus, also known as HPV, is one of the leading causes of cancer in women ages 18-26. Lori Hill, a clinical research nurse practitioner at Ohio State University and Hocking College faculty member, is currently studying the effects of stress on women's bodies. Her studies test whether or not stress related activities affect pap test results and the Guardisil vaccine, given to prevent HPV.

Hill is searching for female volunteers ages 18 to 26 who do not plan on becoming pregnant within the next year to participate in her study. Participants would receive the series of Guardasil vaccines for free, worth a total of $390, two free pap smears and four $10 gift certificates over the period of a year. There are currently sites in Meigs, Gallia, Athens, Logan, Perry, Ross and Muskingum counties so participants would not have to travel to Columbus. For more information, please contact Lori Hill.
