Smile-A-Thon Raises More Than $600 for Student Emergency Fund
The Hocking College Smile-A-Thon, hosted by the Hocking College Foundation, took place February 26-28. During the event, students had the opportunity to thank someone in the Hocking College community by sending them a "smiley-face" card. The event was prompted by the national Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day initiative going on across college campuses nationwide.

Food and drinks were provided all day on Thursday, February 28 in the Student Center Lobby. Students were encouraged to donate a dollar to the student emergency fund and sign a "Random Acts of Kindness" pledge. The pledge was signed by 284 people, while 270 "smiley-face" cards were distributed across campus.

Overall, the event was a success, compiling $666 for the student emergency fund. "The Smile-a-Thon was more successful than we ever imagined! Students, faculty and staff enjoyed a day full of positive experiences: good food, giving and receiving thanks, pledging random acts of kindness and lots and lots of smiles!"  Libby Villavicencio, Hocking College Foundation Executive Director, said.

Nick Hillard was the winner of the gumball estimate. Nick is a student in the Natural Resources Law Enforcement program, and he won a $25 gift card to the Rocky Outlet Store. The gumballs represented the number of scholarships awarded to Hocking College students annually. Nick's guess was 1,444, and the correct answer was 1,470. The awards add up to $771,750 in scholarships annually.
Phi Theta Kappa Phi Theta Kappa Kicks Off Spring Membership Enrollment
March 1 marked the kickoff for the Phi Theta Kappa spring membership campaign on all three Hocking College campuses. Students received their official membership invitations at their home addresses during spring break.

Phi Theta Kappa is the student-driven honor society of the two-year college with over 2.2 million members - making it the largest student organization (two or four year) and largest Greek organization in the world. The mission is two fold:
  1. Recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and;
  2. Provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
Hocking College Phi Theta Kappa student dues are a one-time lifetime fee of $80. A 3.5 cumulative GPA is required to join with 12 credit hours earned at Hocking College. A student must maintain a 3.25 thereafter.

At Hocking College, now "We Are ONE" Phi Theta Kappa, with three distinct chapter identities:
  • Alpha Mu Delta Chapter of main campus meets Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. in Oakley 301 (Social Science Pace Lab)
  • Beta Lambda Nu Chapter of Perry Campus meets Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. in the Perry Commons
  • Beta Sigma Omega Chapter of Logan Campus meets some Fridays (March 15, 22, April 12 and 26) in the HCEI Conference Room
All campus chapters now have the opportunities to achieve a five star rating, which means all chapters will be working towards excellence in opportunities to provide students with scholarship support, research opportunities, leadership development, service-learning experiences and fellowship.

Hocking College's present advising team includes:
  • Julie Cohara, former advisor of our main campus chapter, has returned as an advisor and is now serving all three campus chapters as the contact advisor.
  • Alpha Mu Delta:Co-Advisors Michael Whittemore and Jennifer Yanity with advising support from Kerry Hagerty and Amy Roe
  • Beta Lambda Nu: Co-Advisors Brenda Hoops and Melissa Woodrum with advising support from Christine Woodgeard
  • Beta Sigma Omega: Co-Advisor Sarah Baldwin with advising support from James Baker
If you'd like to become involved, or would like more information about supporting Phi Theta Kappa (from encouraging it in your classes to actively advising), please contact Julie Cohara.

Please help us encourage eligible student scholars to accept their Phi Theta Kappa membership throughout March. More information about student membership benefits are available on the PTK website.

Additionally, Phi Theta Kappa is establishing an office in JL 251 with posted office hours.
Students Participate in Good Works Walk
On Saturday, February 23, 2013, several community members gathered in Athens, Ohio for the 11th Annual Good Works' Walk. Hocking College students from Sue Fletcher's Contemporary Issues class raised over $450 to support the Timothy House, the only homeless shelter for nine counties in Southeastern Ohio.

The Walk is intended to educate participants about homelessness and poverty. The groups participating left from the First United Methodist Church on College Street, encountering various activities along the way to educate participants about the seriousness of the impoverished. All of the proceeds collected went to aiding the homeless at the Timothy House.

Great job to Sue Fletcher's Contemporary Issues class for raising awareness and funds to help the impoverished!

Hocking College Partners with the Ohio Benefit Bank
Hocking College has partnered with the Ohio Benefit Bank to support students outside of their academic lives. The Ohio Benefit Bank is a program of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, Ohio's largest charitable response to hunger.

The Ohio Benefit Bank provides programs and resources that help hundreds of thousands of Ohioans fight hunger and poverty. Through the Ohio Benefit Bank, students will be able to access applications for 26 different work supports and tax credits including: food assistance, cash assistance, utility assistance, childcare assistance, veterans' education benefits and free tax filing.

The possibilities with this new partnership are broad and include: increasing enrollment, increasing retention rates and strengthening relationships with our students and community.   Many students may qualify for assistance but are not taking advantage of the benefits available.

Training for this program was over spring break, and included many people from academic units and student affairs throughout the college. If you have a student in need of any assistance in this area, please direct them to contact their student affairs coordinator.   Another training will be held April 5 from 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., with a break for lunch.  Please contact Dr. Carl Bridges, Provost, if you are interested in attending.

Care Project 3 Seeking Female Volunteers
The human papillomavirus, also known as HPV, is one of the leading causes of cancer in women ages 18-26. Lori Hill, a clinical research nurse practitioner at Ohio State University and Hocking College faculty member, is currently studying the effects of stress on women's bodies. Her studies test whether or not stress related activities affect pap test results and the Guardisil vaccine, given to prevent HPV.

Hill is searching for female volunteers ages 18 to 26 who do not plan on becoming pregnant within the next year to participate in her study. Participants would receive the series of Guardasil vaccines for free, worth a total of $390, two free pap smears and four $10 gift certificates over the period of a year. There are currently sites in Meigs, Gallia, Athens, Logan, Perry, Ross and Muskingum counties so participants would not have to travel to Columbus. For more information, please contact Lori Hill.
New Printing Process Outlined
As we shared previously, Hocking College will be partnering with Ohio University Printing Services for our printing needs.  The representative from OU Printing will be on campus for a brief training at 10 a.m. on Friday March 15 in JL 195.  If you frequently use printing services, it is recommended you attend this trainings.

Beginning March 13, please use the following process to have documents printed:
  • Complete the attached order form.  As in our previous process, you must complete the form in its entirety, and an account number is mandatory when printing.  No purchase orders are needed, only account numbers.  This form can also be found on the Hocking College intranet and printed copies are available in the warehouse.
  • Send the order form along with the document either via e-mail to printing@ohio.edu, or through interoffice mail directed to "OU Printing Services."  You may also drop off the job at the warehouse.  OU Printing Services will have a mailbox in the warehouse.
  • OU Printing Services will pick-up new orders (if you choose not to e-mail the order) and deliver completed orders in the mornings between 9 and 11 a.m.  The warehouse will then deliver the orders to your office on their regular delivery schedule.
  • Although the timing may be a bit longer during the transition period, standard black and white documents should be turned around within 24 hours.  During the transition period, please provide the order to OU at least 2 days before you will need the item in order to ensure you receive your documents on time (notice will be given on special orders.)
  • If you place the order via e-mail, you will receive a confirmation of receipt.
  • Forms that were formerly in stock at the Printshop will now be available in the warehouse.
Our goal is to make this transition as seamless as possible.  If you have any concerns or issues with the process, please contact Sonja Puckett at ext. 7118.
