Tammy Keith
School of Nursing Names New Dean, Adds Advisor
Hocking College is pleased to welcome Tammy Keith as new Dean of the School of Nursing and Tarra Begley-Hoops as the new Clinical Placement Advisor.

Keith is a 1983 graduate of Hocking College. She was hired in 1983 as an RN Supervisor at Logan Health Care Center. She began her career teaching at Hocking College in 1988.

In 1989, Keith decided to dedicate her time primarily to Hocking College. In 2012, she became Associate Dean at the School of Nursing. In September 2012, she took on the role of Interim Dean, until this became permanent January 1.

"I am very excited for the opportunity to assume the role as Dean of the School of Nursing. Working at Hocking College has allowed me to grow
Tarra Begley-Hoops
in ways I never could have imagined," Keith said. "As an alumnus of the Nursing Program, I am fully aware of the challenges and rewards of being a student and graduate of Hocking College School of Nursing."
Begley-Hoops is a 2006 graduate of Hocking College's Office Administration program. In 2009, she became the Office Coordinator for the School of Nursing at Hocking College. As Clinical Placement Advisor, Begley-Hoops is responsible for establishing and maintaining clinical placements, managing clinical facilities activities and ensuring compliance with facility requirements.

"Visiting each of our clinical facilities has been a priority for me as the opportunity our facilities provide to our students is an essential piece to their education.  Dean Keith and I have currently made eleven visits and plan to finish up the visits by the end of spring term," Begley-Hoops said.
Administrative Services Update
The Facilities Department is working on a number of projects in the upcoming months.  While each project is in a different phase of development, you've likely already seen some activity in this regard on campus.
  1. Campus-wide Lighting Retro Fits, Building Automation and Gas Well Reconditioning
In August 2012, Hocking College partnered with the State Architect's Office and Brewer-Garrett Company to implement an energy conservation performance contract. Upon completion of the project in May 2013, the college will realize an annual reduction in energy consumption of 3,045 MMBtu, annual utility savings of $57,460, and annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 748 Metric Tons GHG CO2 equivalent. Projected annual energy savings for electricity is 757,150 kWh.
  2. Campus-wide Exterior Building and Directional Signs
As part of the above project, we have received $21,570 in rebates from AEP due to upgrading our lights on campus. These funds will be used for new campus-wide exterior building and directional signs.  Each building will have a sign similar to what is currently on the Visual Arts Center.  Look for the new signs to be in place in a few months.
  3. Roof Repairs
Hocking Heights is getting a new roof.  We are finalizing the project details with the contractors and hope to being work as soon as the weather permits.  Additionally, we recognize that many of the academic buildings on campus are also in need of attention; therefore, you'll notice a number of repairs taking place this year.
  4. Fire Alarm System Upgrade
We have contracted with Kramer Engineers to provide a detailed engineering review and analysis of our existing main campus fire alarm systems. Their final report will contain probable construction costs estimates for new systems as needed.  We anticipate receiving their report in February, which will help us plan the project accordingly.
  5. Bookstore Relocation
The Hocking College Bookstore will be moving to Second Floor, Davidson Hall during spring semester.  The planning team is currently working on the logistics related to this move in an effort to provide as little inconvenience to the students and staff as possible. The campus will be informed once a relocation date has been determined.
  6. Music Relocation
The Music program will move out of Washington Hall and into the current Bookstore/Print Shop space. This project is in the "initial planning phase" with more details available soon.
  7. Visual Arts Center
Although the Hot Glass Studio opened its door in the former Holl Lab at the beginning of autumn 2012, more renovations are still needed to complete this project, such as constructing a design classroom, photo studio and various workshops.  By autumn semester 2013, the entire Art program will relocate from the Nelsonville Public Square into the Visual Arts Center.  Hocking College will continue to have a gallery presence on the Square.
  8. Inn at Hocking College
Feinknopf, Macioce, Schappa were hired by the college to develop a renovation plan for the Inn at Hocking College. The Building Condition Report & Business Training Center Renovation Study can be viewed on the Hocking College intranet. This project is in the concept phase and will require private funds through charitable giving in order to make it a reality.
  9. Rhapsody
Chef Alfonso and his team have big plans for Rhapsody's future.  Look for minor renovations to compliment his vision.
Contact Myriah Short, Vice President of Administrative Services, with questions about any of the projects.

All Employee Learning Day: Moodle Training Required
All faculty are required to register for Moodle Training during the All Employee Learning Day on February 20.  We have divided the training sessions into three categories: basic, intermediate and advanced.  You will have the choice to begin at the level of training you need.    Dr. Carl Bridges, Provost, will be sending a survey out in the next day for you to register for your session.  Please complete this registration by Sunday, February 10.
President's List Applications Available Pres List 12
Students with a 3.5 or higher accumulative grade point average and a minimum of 30 Hocking College credit hours will receive an invitation to apply for consideration for the President's List.  Students are asked to apply online this year via Survey Monkey. Those selected for the President's List demonstrate outstanding leadership and service, and maintain the highest academic standards.

Faculty and staff endorsements are critical in the selection process.  Endorsements with specific information, completed by staff that work closely with a student and have first-hand knowledge of leadership skills and service activities, are a powerful point of consideration in the process. If you cannot provide specific information on leadership and service, please refer the student to another staff member for endorsement.

Students are ineligible for consideration if endorsement forms are not part of their portfolios at the time of review.  This year's endorsements are due March 1, 2013. The selection committee will meet during March to select those fitting the criteria.

The Board of Trustees will receive the President's List and select six winners, one from each school, to receive the Trustee Award at commencement. The winners will each receive a $500 cash prize.
President's List recipients will receive a medal and a framed certificate. The Awards Dinner will be held during the April Board of Trustees Meeting at the Inn at Hocking College.

We thank you in advance for providing the supporting documentation necessary to assist us in making these selections.  Your time in this process is very much appreciated.
Purchasing Cards Now Available
A new form of payment is now available for departments across campus. The new method, known as purchasing cards or "P-Cards," allows departments to renew subscriptions and order supplies without processing a payment authorization or purchase order. Although some restrictions may apply, this card allows departments to obtain small orders more effectively.

One card is assigned to the head of the department. The cardholder is responsible for ordering supplies, obtaining receipts and invoices and reconciliations. Each cardholder must attend two mandatory training sessions. The first will discuss the uses of the card, and the other will inform users about the administrative functions.

The new P-Card does not completely replace the payment authorization; however, each card does have a transaction limit. Great job to Julie Brown and Lisa Stevens for their contributions to the new payment plan!

Cass explained about the several species of owls found in Southeast Ohio, but the top three being the Great Horned Owl, Barred Owl and Eastern Screech Owl.

After the talk, the group hiked the Pauline Atkins Trail. As the short hike neared an end, they stopped to listen for owls. They heard a Barred Owl in the distance, but despite their best efforts, they could not coax him away from his perch. To read more about the Owl Hike, visit the

Reminder: Support Staff Collecting Blankets for Red Cross
As the weather from the weekend changes back to the cold and dreary days of winter, we are reminded of those less fortunate and in need.  Once again the Support Staff Bargaining Unit will collect blankets until the end of February for the Red Cross.  These blankets are distributed during times of crisis such as tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, and fires.  They are used for the Red Cross shelters that are setup, but mostly given to people who have lost their belongings due to the aforementioned situations.

Any size is accepted, but queen size is preferred, and blankets for children are nice.  The blankets must be new. Drop off your donation to one of the following locations:
  • Darlene Tipple - DVD 309
  • Kim Coy - JL 367
  • Betty Dalton - Public Safety Services Building
  • Cindy Wasson - JL 154
  • Nancy Holcomb - Logan Campus
  • Cindy Dillinger - NNR 203
Reminder: Hocking College Hosts "College Goal Sunday"
Hocking College is the Athens County site for "College Goal Sunday," a statewide financial aid event taking place on February 10, 2013 at 2 p.m.

This free event provides students and their families with assistance to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans as well as the need-based state grants.

Due to the great demand expected for assistance in completing the FASFA, families are encouraged to register at www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org or by calling 800.233.6734.

The FAFSA is key when it comes to funding a college education. It helps families overcome financial barriers that prevent students from attending their institution of choice. Studies show that 50 percent of students are more likely to attend college if they complete the FAFSA.

Students should bring their social security card, driver's license, IRS 1040 tax return and W2s, their parents' IRS 1040 tax return and W2s and any other benefit and/or income information to the event. Attendees will register at the Light Hall Main Concourse at Hocking College. No alternate date for the event has been scheduled in case of inclement weather.

The event is presented by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents.

Hocking Staff Receives Heartfelt Thanks

Parents of a Hocking College student expressed their gratitude to Hocking staff through a letter enclosed with their final payment.  The student's mother, Diane Buschle, found guidance with staff in the Financial Aid and Cashier and Records offices.

"Your staff members have been our wonderful partners, successfully guiding us through the payment process without fail," Buschle said.   "Without your help, I think that we would still be trying to make our way through the maze of government finances, and we would have felt unnecessary frustration," Buschle wrote. "We are completely grateful to your office and staff for all your help, but mostly the courteous manner with which you treated us during each and every correspondence."

Congratulations on a job well done!
