New Year Inspiration
Rob
Most people who have been in the Hocking College C-Store or Dining Hall have met Rob Retling. If you have weight loss goals for the New Year, you may be inspired to know that Rob lost 194 pounds in 2012.

Rob became increasingly concerned about the problems many of his overweight relatives were experiencing. He decided to make a change and began eating right, drinking plenty of water and exercising daily. He starts each day with an egg sandwich and never eats more than 1,300 calories per day. He no longer needs to take blood pressure medicine and is looking and feeling great.

Well done Rob, you have inspired us all!

Join PTK
Phi Theta Kappa (ΦΘΚ) is the largest honor society of two-year schools in the nation. For those of you who don't know, Hocking College is lucky enough to have a chapter right here on the main campus -- Alpha Mu Delta (AMΔ). AMΔ meets weekly in Oakley 302 on Thursdays at 5:30pm. In addition, we have two other chapters -- Beta Sigma Omega (Logan Campus) and Beta Lambda Nu (Perry Campus.)

Why Join ΦΘΚ?

Scholarship
ΦΘΚ not only recognizes student achievement through awards, but scholarships as well. In fact, ΦΘΚ has access to over $37 million in scholarships! For those of you who may feel overwhelmed by the scholarship process, fear not! Numerous Hocking College students have taken full advantage of scholarships in the past. In addition, many four-year schools offer automatic transfer of scholarships for ΦΘΚ members -- many of which have articulation agreements with Hocking!

Leadership
ΦΘΚ is so large and reputable that just having been an officer or member gives students a competitive edge in the workforce. Companies recognize the added leadership students earn by being in ΦΘΚ. As an officer, you have the opportunity to lead positions such as President, Vice President of Service, Vice President of Leadership, Vice President of Fellowship, Vice President of Membership, Public Relations Specialist, Secretary, Treasurer and more. Currently, we still have some positions open so come on down!

Service
ΦΘΚ provides numerous opportunities for you to help your campus, community and abroad. Some projects done by students in the past include a Hocking River clean-up effort and community education regarding the effects of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD.) This year, ΦΘΚ collaborated with AmeriCorps. They helped with the fundraiser for the annual Hocking College Holiday Stocking Stuffer Event, which raised enough money to provide 30 stockings to local children in need for the Salvation Army.

Fellowship
ΦΘΚ provides a great way to meet friends, build your personal network, and see some new places as well. Each year, AMΔ participates in at least one club retreat. In addition,  many opportunities are available to participate in conferences all across the state. In the past, AMΔ has visited many states including Texas and Washington. This year, we plan to visit San Jose, California for ΦΘΚ's 95th Annual Convention. Spots are available!

As you can begin to see, ΦΘΚ not only benefits our campus and community, but also our members and officers. If you are interested in aspiring for scholarships, developing your capabilities as a leader, and providing service-learning, then come to Oakley 302 on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. or get involved with your local campus chapter. See you there!

Yours in Scholarship,

The Alpha Mu Delta Leadership Team
