Hocking College to Share Printing Services with Ohio University
Hocking College has agreed to a shared services arrangement with Ohio University (OU) in the delivery of printing services. Over the course of the next two and a half months, all printing will be transitioned from our campus print shop to Ohio University Printing Services, utilizing a similar ordering process. Prices will be competitive, and, in all cases, must be cheaper than the cost of having it prepared externally in the community.
Hocking College currently works with Ohio University Printing Services for some items already, such as business cards and high-end printed materials, which could not be done in our print shop. OU Printing Services has a staff of 13 employees to assist with all our printing needs and have won awards for the quality of their printed pieces from the International Publishing Management Association and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
They pride themselves on meeting deadlines, and are accustomed to servicing OU's regional campuses so the procedures for dealing with remote sites have already been established. Furthermore, Ohio University Printing Services has graphic designers on staff to assist in ensuring a quality printed presence. At some point soon, the staff of Ohio University's Printing Services will be on campus to meet with Deans and departmental staff to forge the partnership between our needs and their services.
The concept of shared services is an initiative of the Board of Regents pursuant to Ohio Law to create operational efficiencies and cost reduction by combining efforts of campuses across the state. Two employees displaced as a result of this effort will be provided with career transition services by the Lee Hecht Harrison Company.
Questions may be addressed to Sonja Hill, Director of Retail and Dining Services, at extension 7118.

 From the Provost
FYI...About First Week Class Attendance
For our first week of classes, please make sure that students are registered properly, that their financial aid is processed, and/or that payment plans are arranged. Faculty: Please print your rosters and take attendance. If you have any students who are not listed on you roster, please send them immediately to Cashier and Records (CARS), the department dean's office or the Provost's office. In most cases, these students have been de-registered, and we need to make sure that their accounts are current. We should never allow students to sit in our classes without being registered or somehow documented in our student information system as being approved to be present. I would appreciate the staff's support in this effort by also directing students to the proper place to get issues resolved. In addition, if you have any students who did not attend class the entire first week and have made no contact with you, please send their names to your Student Affairs Coordinator (SAC.) For Nursing, Allied Health and Public Safety Services students, please send the names to me. I am in the process of putting together some specific strategies for dealing with student attendance that will involve faculty and staff.

Ohio Colleges and Universities Establish Remediation-Free Standards
Ohio's public colleges and universities issued uniform statewide standards on January 3, 2013 for students to be considered remediation-free for college-level English, writing, math and science. Approximately 41% of all public high school students entering a public college or university in the state are currently taking at least one remedial course in English or math.
The report comes as part of the state's effort to reduce the number of college- and career-bound students who need non-credit-bearing remedial courses before they can begin their credit-bearing work.
"We currently have too many students graduating from Ohio high schools who are not ready to enter the work place or be successful in non-remedial college coursework," Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Jim Petro said. "These uniform standards will help make it clear to students, parents and educators exactly what is needed to be considered remediation-free at any Ohio public college and university."
The remediation-free standards and thresholds are not intended to replace college and university admissions policies; any admitted student who has earned remediation-free status in a subject will be eligible to enroll in a college credit-bearing course in that subject. However, colleges and universities may still require placement examinations to determine the entering course that provides a student the best opportunity to succeed in his/her program of study.

| Alum Named District Wildlife Manager
Congratulations to Hocking College alumnus Tim Parrett of Lancaster, who was recently named the new Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife Southeast Ohio wildlife manager. Parrett was a Hocking College recreation and wildlife graduate and later received a bachelor's degree in fisheries management from The Ohio State University. Parrett began his career with the ODNR Division of Wildlife in 1992 as a fish management unit leader. In an Athens Messenger article, Parrett commented that his experience at Hocking College helped him solidify his career goals. "At Hocking, there's a requirement to do an internship with some sort of agency related to your major," Parrett said. "My time with the fish hatchery as an intern confirmed to me that ODNR was the agency I really wanted to work for." |
