From the Provost
80% Campaign Update
As of today, November 27, I am pleased to announce we have registered 1,405 returning students for spring semester 2013. Our goal of 3,700 returning students is one-third accomplished, with only one week into our registration process. Thank you to everyone who has put forth extra effort, thus far. Let's keep up the good work!
Our faculty members, department administration, Student Affairs Coordinators and admissions staff members are in the process of contacting other prospective students who have expressed an interest in Hocking College. Please provide any support that they need as they help us meet the goal of registering 600 new students for spring semester.
In order to better accommodate our student registration, we have extended the Cashier and Records office hours of operation to 7:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. through December 14, Monday through Thursday.
Please remember to share the following messages with the students:
- We have almost given away all of the 1,500 t-shirts we had for the first returning students who registered for spring semester. However, we have a few remaining! Students on main campus should see Cindy Wasson in JL 154 for their t-shirt coupon. For students at the Perry Campus, they can pick-up their t-shirt from Christine Woodgeard; at Logan Campus, Nancy Holcomb has the t-shirts.
- Students can register on WebAdvisor before December 14 without making immediate payment. Students need to make sure they either have paid in full, enrolled in the Payment Plan or have financial aid in place by January 2, or they will be de-registered.
- Any financial aid eligible returning student who is in good standing and registers prior to December 14 will receive their overage check in the second week of classes on January 17.
Remember, our goal is to have the most outstanding re-enrollment we've ever had. But, we can only accomplish this with everyone's participation. Thank you for your assistance, and stay tuned for further updates.

What is "QuickStart"?
For those of you previously familiar with New Student Scheduling and Registration (NSSR), QuickStart is replacing it as the new student scheduling process.
What's the difference between NSSR and QuickStart? At QuickStart, new students will still be able to assess, meet with an adviser and register for classes. However, the primary difference is that during QuickStart, new students can apply for admission, complete their financial aid application (FAFSA), then assess, advise and register, all on the same day!
Another difference is the format of the event. The previous NSSR events had a set schedule. The QuickStart events are station-formatted, so that the schedule for each person is customized, and they can arrive anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. However, attendees should plan to allocate four hours to complete the entire process.
Why Change the Process? With our student demographic changing, the goal is to seek to attract more non-traditional students who may not have time to visit campus multiple times. The format also benefits traditional students who may want to complete the entire enrollment process quickly. Furthermore, one of the QuickStart dates is offered on a Saturday to accommodate someone who may work during the week.
Why are we offering a QuickStart at the Logan Campus? The Saturday QuickStart is offered at the Logan Campus to attempt to attract students who may be on the Rt. 33 corridor.
Are reservations for QuickStart required? As with NSSR events, we prefer registrations. However, with the new QuickStart format, we are also encouraging walk-in registrations.
The QuickStart events for spring 2013 are being held Thursday, November 29 on Main Campus and Saturday, December 1 at the Logan Campus. Please note: Students who are enrolling in any program may attend the Logan QuickStart. It is not limited to just the programs offered at the Logan Campus. New students can arrive anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for both dates.
Visit the QuickStart webpage for more information or to assist a prospective student to reserve their spot for the QuickStart event. Thank you to everyone for working to adapt our processes to better serve our students!

P.A.S.S. Class Hosts Sale to Benefit Food Cupboard
The Personal Academic Success Strategies (P.A.S.S.) classes will host a bake sale and raffle on Wednesday, November 28 near the Light Dining Hall from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. All proceeds to go to the Nelsonville Food Cupboard on Washington Street.
The students will also distribute information about hunger in Appalachia during this time. The raffle drawing will be held at 3:30 p.m.
The P.A.S.S. classes decided to conduct the bake sale and raffle since hunger is a large problem that Southeastern Ohio faces. The classes researched hunger statistics for Southeastern Ohio and found that one in five people struggle with hunger. The classes then visited the Food Cupboard and learned that the Food Cupboard assists a wide range of people, from people asking for food once a month to people asking for food more often.
The Food Cupboard has provided as many as 1,100 food boxes in one month. Workers noted the economy has an effect on the number of donations for food as well as numbers of persons asking for food. Many Hocking College Students ask for assistance from this Food Cupboard.
Contact Jane McClain, Arts and Sciences Instructor, with any questions.

Counselor's Corner
Counseling Center Assessing College Students' Mental Health Needs
Hocking College Counselor Judith Palmer Manley, M.Ed., and LPC, has been working on the Hocking College Counseling Center Needs Assessment, which focuses on assessing the mental health needs of Hocking College students. The Counseling Center plans to utilize the data collected to guide the development of mental health programming and outreach.
Research indicates that emotional and mental health influence the degree of success and retention of college students. The Hocking College Counseling Center provides a confidential opportunity to aid students in their academic success and completion by offering individual counseling, crisis intervention, group counseling, wellness assessments, personal wellness plans, Myers Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) and supportive counseling. We also provide appropriate referrals for those students experiencing serious mental health issues.
The efforts of the Counseling Center are enhanced by several factors including campus mental health awareness; collaboration of faculty and staff to provide helpful resources; referrals, and student empowerment; as well as knowledge of the student populations' specific needs. The Counseling Center is making attempts to improve mental health programming and outreach to better meet the needs of the students here at Hocking College.
A recent approach to increase these efforts has involved the development of the Hocking College Counseling Center Needs Assessment. This assessment gathers information pertaining to demographics, physical health, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, and campus climate. The data collected is intended to guide the development of proactive mental health awareness and programming, supportive counseling including group counseling, and support groups, as well as helpful resources that focus on the specific needs of the Hocking College student population.
The Hocking College Counseling Center Needs Assessment is an anonymous survey currently in paper and pencil format. The survey takes approximately 5-10 minutes and is available in the Counseling Center. Participation by faculty and staff in the data collection efforts is vital as it supports several objectives that enhance the academic success of the student population including mental health awareness, student empowerment, link to mental health resources, and the development of mental health programming specific to the Hocking College student population.
The Counseling Center staff is also available for classroom guest speaking or even just a short presentation to inform your students about the Counseling Center. If you are interested in a Counseling Center staff member attending your class as a guest speaker, please review the following topics:
- Suicide
- Adjustment to College Life
- Anxiety (Including Test Anxiety)
- Stress
- Trauma related issues, including PTSD
- Domestic Violence
- Alcohol and Other Drug Use and Abuse
- Wellness Plans/Taking Care of Self
- Myers Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI)
- Grief and Loss
- Depression
- Eating Disorders
- Staying Focused and Motivated
- Homesickness
- Managing Various Roles (student, employee, father/mother, boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife)
Topics for classroom presentations are not limited to what has been provided on the list. Please feel free to make suggestions and/or requests for other topics to be covered.
Please contact Judy Palmer Manley at ext.6157 if you are interested in participating in the distribution of the Needs Assessment, or would like a Counseling Center staff member to present in your classroom.

Alumni Spotlight
Ghana Alumus Discusses Web-Based Education
Four visitors from Ghana met with President Erickson and Libby Villavicencio, Foundation Executive Director, to discuss the potential for an exchange and workforce training program in partnership with Hocking College and the Tri-County Career Center. Michael Nkrumah, originally from Ghana, made the initial contact. He is a 1999 Hocking College graduate with an AAS in Medical Assistant
In Ghana, many contributions and donations are made to the public health system. However, when supplies and technology arrive, there is no accompanying training. The goal behind the potential program is to provide web-based instruction to health professionals in Ghana through Hocking College and the Tri-County Career Center. The discussions about the program are still in the preliminary stage.

Nelsonville Police Department to Offer Prescription Drug Drop Box Program
The Nelsonville Police Department began offering a prescription drug drop box program on November 26. The program is sponsored by the Ohio Attorney General's Office, along with the Ohio Department of Health and the Drug Free Action Alliance.
Nelsonville residents will be able to drop off unused prescription drugs anytime a police officer is available at the police station located at 211 Lake Hope Drive in Nelsonville, and police officers will properly dispose of the medications.
Research from the Ohio Department of Health shows that southern Ohio is the epicenter of the prescription drug abuse problem in the state.
"The Nelsonville Police Department is excited to partner with the Attorney General's Office in providing a means for the proper disposal of unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs," Jason Wallace, Nelsonville Police Chief, said.

Reminder: Book Drive Sponsored by ESL Class
This is the last week for the book drive sponsored by students in the ESL 1143 Composition class.
The students are working to collect a variety of books to support the ongoing literacy efforts of Better World Books, which has raised over $12 million towards literacy programs and libraries in the USA and Africa through the daily sale online of donated books.
Better World Books receives donations into their warehouse, separates them into books to be shipped to teachers and schools in Africa without sufficient book resources, and then puts all other donated books up for sale online. The program has also kept over 92 million books from landfills.
All types of books are welcome, even reference books and textbooks. Magazines and journals cannot be donated. Green collection boxes are located at the following places around campus:
- Natural Resources building
- JL Dining Hall
- JL 312
- DVD 1st floor (near library)
- Student Center
You are welcome to donate books from home. Please contact Carla Ryan-Hirst if you have a stack of books and would like students to pick them up from you.

Hocking Students Lauded for Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts
Nine students and Giles Lee, Director of Co-curricular Activities, traveled to Staten Island to help the Bawatnehs, a family whose house was badly damaged by the hurricane. The group left Hocking College on Friday, November 16 and returned Sunday, November 18.
Hurricane Sandy made landfall near Atlantic City, N.J., on Oct. 29, but many are still unable to return to their homes like the Bawatnehs. Lee and the students helped the family strip the interior of their home down to the frame so they can begin rebuilding it.
For additional information, visit The Athens Messenger for their coverage of the trip.
Kudos and congratulations to all the students and staff involved in this important volunteer effort!
