Student Center Turns 10 Years Old
This fall, the Hocking College Student Center turned 10 years old. The expanded $11 million Student Center opened in 2002 after a year and half of construction, with a concert by singer Ricky Skaggs.
Over the years, we have expanded the free weights area, added more cardio options and more Cybex strength machines. The Construction Management - Electrical students have helped provide stations for laptop connections. A video gaming area was added at the request of students. There are more aerobic classes and a club room has been added.
In the early days, weekday average usage was estimated at about 300 people. This number increased greatly when North and Downour Halls opened. Average daily usage is now more than 1,000 people.
Those of us who have been around for a while agree that the biggest improvement has been the addition of curtains to the Multiplex, which makes it more useable for sports, adds a gaming area and provides a stage that can be used for various events.
The Student Center has become home to many events including Smart Start, STARS, commencement for both Hocking College and Tri-County, health fairs, job fairs and a variety of community events.
But, as times have changed, some things have been removed from the Student Center. At one point in time the Student Center housed a pay phone and an ATM. The move away from cash and the popularity of cell phones turned both into a waste of space.
In recent years, the Construction Management Concrete class has given us new outdoor areas to use and Landscape Management students have added a beautiful patio, flower beds and an exciting entrance to our 18-hole disc golf course.
As we look to the future, we hope to landscape more areas, add a beach area at the rear of the building with a sand volleyball court and camp fire area. More bike racks and a tent-like structure over the tennis courts are also possibilities. Use of Student Center computers seems to have peeked, as increasingly students are using their own laptops and tablets.
We look forward to the next ten years!
