From the President
A New Beginning
Today marks an important milestone for the College, as we conclude a difficult period marked by the pain of last month's reduction in force. Now, we turn toward a future that is both hopeful and somewhat unfamiliar.
It will take some time to adjust to the many changes in our academic and student services divisions, and to evaluate how well these changes work to benefit our students. However, as I have spoken to several colleagues who have accepted new or expanded responsibilities, I have been impressed with the consistent optimism they express over our return to operational strength. There is plenty to be hopeful for--a new enrollment campaign for Spring Semester 2013; a campus-wide strategy for greater shared decision making; a revitalization project aimed at framing a new future for the Inn and Rhapsody Restaurant; a new partnership with the Adult Career Center to provide workforce development opportunities across the region.
None of these exciting initiatives diminishes the loss of our friends and colleagues, or the countless ways in which they made Hocking College a better place. But they do remind us that the College is a living institution, one that even in difficult times, continues to seek opportunities to adapt and grow in a changing environment.

Hocking College Hosts Blood Drive to Support East Coast
Hocking College will host a Red Cross blood drive on November 26 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Student Center to help support hospitals in communities affected by Hurricane Sandy. As of 3:30 p.m. on November 5, Hurricane Sandy had caused 370 Red Cross Blood Drives to be cancelled across a 13 state region. Those cancellations have resulted in a shortfall of 12,700 blood and platelet donations.
The Central Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross serves 27 counties in Ohio and 42 hospitals. Daily, 800 blood donors are needed in the region. During times of crisis, such as Hurricane Sandy, the Red Cross moves blood and blood products to areas affected so that the blood needs of people in those communities can be met.
The number of blood drive cancellations is expected to continue to rise until areas on the East Coast are restored with power and facilities. The American Red Cross is urging blood and platelet donations in areas throughout the country that were unaffected by the hurricane. Hospitals in the areas affected by the storm need the support and donations.
To schedule an appointment, call 1.800.RED.CROSS

Support for Culinary Student
One of our Culinary Students, Tia Fogle, was in a car accident last week and has been in critical condition.
Tia and her family are in great need of our support and assistance. The Epicurean Club will have a donation box in the Hospitality Office for donation of care package items to send to Tia and her family. Items such as magazines, gift cards and toiletries are things that we can send to let the family know that they have our support.
We are also in the process of organizing a blood drive in honor of Tia and to support the Red Cross.

Reminder: Book Drive Sponsored by ESL Class
Friday launched the beginning of a four-week book drive sponsored by students in the ESL 1143 Composition class.
The students are working to collect a variety of books to support the ongoing literacy efforts of Better World Books, which has raised over $12 million towards literacy programs and libraries in the USA and Africa through the daily sale online of donated books.
Better World Books receives donations into their warehouse, separates them into books to be shipped to teachers and schools in Africa without sufficient book resources, and then puts all other donated books up for sale online. The program has also kept over 92 million books from landfills.
All types of books are welcome, even reference books and textbooks. Magazines and journals cannot be donated. Green collection boxes are located at the following places around campus:
- Natural Resources building
- JL Dining Hall
- JL 312
- DVD 1st floor (near library)
- Student Center
You are welcome to donate books from home. Please contact Carla Ryan-Hirst if you have a stack of books and would like students to pick them up from you.
