Guidelines for Adverse Weather
As we enter the time period for inclement weather, please review the following information about campus closure.  Individual employees must make their own decision regarding their safety in traveling to work.

Closing Campus
Hocking College will be open for classes except in cases of extreme danger (such as ice), emergency, or mandated closing by public officials (such as when the water supply is unavailable.) There will be a number of times when the public schools might close while the campus remains open.

As weather conditions may be different for each of our campuses, individual locations of Hocking College may close.  Also, the campus may cancel only morning classes and reopen for afternoon and evening classes.

Human Resources
During bad weather, employees can contact the Human Resources Call-Off Line at 740.753.7096.  This number will provide daily information to employees in regard to emergency closures for all campus locations and still allow you to leave a voicemail reporting your absence or tardiness if the College is open.

Listed below are the identified Level One Emergency Personnel.  Each designated Level One Personnel is responsible for notifying other employees when their services are required during an emergency. Any bargaining unit employees required to work will be compensated in accordance with their specific bargaining unit agreement.

Level One Emergency Personnel
For the information of the Hocking College community, Level One Emergency Personnel are identified in the Emergency Management Guide as the following positions:
  • President
  • Vice President of Administrative Services
  • Vice President of Financial Services
  • Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs/Provost
  • Chief Technology Officer
  • Director of Campus Safety
  • Associate Provost
  • Director of Residence Life
  • Director of Facilities
  • Director of Food Services

Those employees who are designated Level One Emergency Personnel are required to be on campus in the event of emergencies and/or cancellations.

Communication of Closure
Any change of schedule or cancellation of classes will be posted on our website (hocking.edu) and our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HockingCollege.Ohio) and announced on these radio or television stations. The stations will be notified by at least 7 a.m.  Do not call the college switchboard.

Police Academy Graduates Students
Hocking College Police Academy graduated 11 new police recruits in a ceremony on October 25, the 93rd Police Academy class to graduate.

Graduates completed more than three months of intensive training at the Police Academy. Some graduates have already gained employment at local agencies.

Michael Taylor, Retired Chief of the Law Enforcement Division for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, provided an overview of Police Officer expectations and offered encouragement to contribute to their communities today.

Commander Tim Voris recognized graduates Richard R. Drake and Jordan Scheidt for perfect attendance and dedication to the Academy. "Both of these young men were prepared and on time each and every day, which says a lot about their dedication and commitment to training and their career choice," Voris said.

Four special awards were presented at the graduation ceremony. The Distinguished Leadership award was given to Sergeant Craig Munyan, military veteran, for his hard work and leadership to the Academy. The Clyde Beasley Service award was presented to Richard R. Drake for his combined performance at the required skill level scores, leadership and dedication during the academy.

Commander Voris and Susan White, Dean of Public Safety, presented a special award to Shirley Jeffers who recently retired with over 44 years of public safety service to Hocking College and her community as former peace officer, instructor, and Hocking College board member. Cadet Jordan Scheidt was the recipient of the Shirley Jeffers award this year by demonstrating an exceptional ability in each skill area.

"Hocking College Police Academy and School of Public Safety has a tradition of service, where men and women have dedicated their lives to their community and to public service," Voris said.

Book Drive Sponsored by ESL Class
Friday launched the beginning of a four-week book drive sponsored by students in the ESL 1143 Composition class.

The students are working to collect a variety of books to support the ongoing literacy efforts of Better World Books, which has raised over $12 million towards literacy programs and libraries in the USA and Africa through the daily sale online of donated books.

Better World Books receives donations into their warehouse, separates them into books to be shipped to teachers and schools in Africa without sufficient book resources, and then puts all other donated books up for sale online. The program has also kept over 92 million books from landfills.

All types of books are welcome, even reference books and textbooks. Magazines and journals cannot be donated. Green collection boxes are located at the following places around campus:
  • Natural Resources building
  • JL Dining Hall
  • JL 312
  • DVD 1st floor (near library)
  • Student Center
You are welcome to donate books from home. Please contact Carla Ryan-Hirst if you have a stack of books and would like students to pick them up from you.
Food Drive Sponsored by School of Health and Nursing
The School of Health and Nursing is sponsoring a food drive in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday. The School hopes to sponsor a food drive each semester and rotate food donations between Hocking, Athens and Perry county food pantries; counties in which Hocking College campuses are located.

This semester's collection will be donated to a Hocking County food pantry. Donations will be accepted in boxes located at the Allied Health office and the Nursing office through Friday, November 16. Contact Barb McGhee if you have any questions.
School of Hospitality Offers Lunch Menu Additions at the Starbrick Bistro
Chef Alfonso Contrisciani, Dean of the School of Hospitality, would like to announce that the menu at the Starbrick Bistro at the Inn at Hocking College has been updated. Customers can choose between three salad choices, six sandwich choices, and five entrée options of chicken, pork, pasta, ribs or vegan rye and barley.

Does a cider and maple cured pork chop sound delicious? Try the six-ounce pork chop served with creamy braised cabbage, buttermilk chive and bacon mashed potatoes.

Is a salad more your style? Try the Woodlands salad with grilled chicken breast served on a bed of mixed greens, garnished with sliced apples, walnuts, bleu cheese, grilled asparagus and tomatoes. It's served with balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

The Starbrick Bistro is open Monday - Thursday from 12 - 2 p.m. Meals are $6, and special dietary needs can be accommodated upon request.

The special themed days below will begin in January, as well as being open an additional day on Friday.

2011 President's Award for Courage in Citizenship

Congratulations to Hocking College graduate Alice VanDoren who was presented with the 2011 President's Award for Courage in Citizenship.

This is a new award, designed to recognize students who take up a social cause or injustice, and invest time and effort in drawing appropriate public attention to it in order to affect a positive change.   Their efforts may include stepping outside of their own comfort zone and drawing attention to themselves, but only for the sake of their cause.

The award will only be granted at the discretion of the Hocking College President, and will not be a regular category in the STARS event or at commencement.
