Energy Conservation Project Begins on Campus
In January 2007, the governor signed legislation to set a goal of reducing energy consumption in state-funded facilities by 20 percent no later than 2014. To comply with this legislation, Hocking College Board of Trustees recently approved a loan agreement to purchase energy improvements. Upon completion of this project, Hocking College will exceed the 20 percent reduction.

The goal is to have the energy savings pay for the estimated costs of $535,000 for improvements. The college will also receive a $49,000 grant from American Electric Power to replace lighting.

The project, being conducted by Brewer-Garrett Co. from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, will begin this week with an estimated completion date of May 2013. Lighting will be replaced in all campus buildings, and heating and cooling systems will be automated.

Contractors will be present in every classroom and building throughout the campus to evaluate and replace lighting. Installation schedules are being developed to take classes into consideration.

The project is estimated to save $57,000 annually, amounting to $663,553 over a 10-year period.

Class Donates to My Sister's Place
My Sister's Place, a local shelter for women who are victims or survivors of abuse in Athens, Hocking and Vinton Counties, was the recipient of a class project in the School of Public Safety Services.

Kelly Cooke, Licensed Social Worker and Executive Director of My Sister's Place, spoke to the Social Services Crisis Recognition and Referral class about the importance of the shelter and the services it offers.

The class selected to perform a class project to benefit My Sister's Place and held fundraisers to be able to purchase items that the shelter needs to serve the community.

"I wanted to do something as a public service for the community, and the group felt this was one area that could use the help," Donald Spradlin, first-year student, said. The class donated two large boxes of supplies to the shelter.

Reminder: Free Workshop Offers Literacy Training and Free Books to Parents
Hocking College is co-sponsoring the Every Child Ready to Read workshop with Athens County Public Libraries. The Athens County Public Library staff will deliver the training and each participant will receive 10 free children's books, in addition to other learning materials. The event will be held October 24 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in DVD 108.

No matter what a child's age, it is not too early or too late to start building early literacy skills.  The Athens County Public Libraries are offering this free one-hour workshop to Hocking College students and staff who are parents and/or caregivers of children from birth to age five.

Every Child Ready to Read is a nationally recognized, research-based training program that teaches techniques to develop early literacy skills in the very young.  Everyday routines can easily be adapted to include opportunities for learning.  Singing, talking, reading, writing and playing can help caregivers and parents prepare young children to be ready to learn when they reach school age.

The workshop is limited to 20 participants. Please email Suzanne Brooks-Korner to register. The event is for parents and/or caregivers only; please do not bring children. You may bring your lunch to the workshop.

Hocking College Contributes to Safe Presidential Visit

As you might know, President Barack Obama visited Athens last Wednesday. What you may not know is that many behind the scenes activities took place to make the event safe and successful.

Hocking College contributed to the safety and success of the event by hosting the US Secret Service at the College's ranges where they were able to perform weapons tests and warm-ups prior to the President's arrival. The Athens County Sheriff Department also played a key role in the entire operation.

Kudos to Hocking College faculty and staff involved in assisting with the President's visit!
