Hocking College to Host Community Planting Day
AmeriCorps, Landscape Management students, Hocking College Wildlife Club and other volunteers will host Community Planting Day on Friday, October 26 from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. in honor of Make a Difference Day.
The goal of this service project is to promote native plantings along the stream of the south side of the Hocking College Student Center. Native plantings offer many benefits, such as easier maintenance and less fertilizer because the native plants are already adapted to the local climate. In addition, native plantings are beneficial to the environment and attract more wildlife, including bees, which are globally declining.
Money to purchase the native plants for the service project was raised by selling homemade cookies made from the native paw paw fruit, in which Hocking College Culinary students assisted with baking. The Hocking College Wildlife Club also donated money towards the service project. Make a Difference Day is celebrated each year on the fourth Saturday of October. The national service day was created by USA WEEKEND Magazine. This service day is the nation's largest day of volunteering.
The community is welcome to participate in the service project. For more information, contact Andrew Freeman CLT, CPH, Hocking College Landscape Management Coordinator.

Archaeology Program Coordinator to Speak at Seminar
Annette Ericksen, Archaeology program coordinating instructor, will discuss W. C. Stiles Jr.'s Mansion, named Thornhill in the abandoned town of Volcano in Wood County during an upcoming seminar. Ericksen has led a team in excavating the Thornhill site during the last two years.

AmeriCorp Offering Academic Success Coaching
AmeriCorps College Completion Coaches program has professional coaches stationed on the Hocking College campus for the year to assist students that meet the following qualifications: 1) Pell-eligible 2) Enrolled in 0054 and/or 0044 Developmental English or math.
Coaches offer free personal, confidential consultations to assist students in creating an academic plan and timeline for the year. It is not a tutor service but rather an academic coaching service. Students are only required to spend a minimum time commitment of four meetings for the entire school year; however, students may request additional meetings.
AmeriCorps-sponsored volunteer opportunities are also available throughout the year and provide great experience to place on a resume and may even be related to students' career field. Workshops will also be available five times throughout the year that will build an understanding of financial literacy, accessing resources on campus, time management skills and more.
Students involved with the program typically achieve a higher G.P.A. and are more likely to complete their degree.
If you are interested in having an AmeriCorps member make an informational presentation to your class or would like to recommend a student for the program, please contact Spencer Hobson or Michael Whittemore. Their office is located at JL 193 with hours by appointment.

Fire and Emergency Services Students Provide Community Training
Thirty-seven Hocking College Fire and Emergency Services students spent classroom time participating in a community service project prior to Fire Prevention Week, which took place October 7-13. Fire and Life Safety classes were conducted for 200 preschool and first grade students at Nelsonville-York Elementary School, Nelsonville Headstart and the Hocking College Early Learning Center. Educating children to take appropriate action during an emergency is a critically important fire department function. Teaching fire survival techniques such as stop, drop, and roll or crawl low under smoke can change behavior and thereby prevent loss of life due to a fire. The fire and emergency services students learn to deliver accurate, positive messages about fire and life safety, targeted to specific age groups. "Providing fire prevention training is a valuable learning opportunity for the Fire Science students, and the cooperation of the local schools is greatly appreciated by the Fire Science teaching staff," Steve Campbell, Hocking College Fire Instructor, said. |
