A Note from the Principal

Today our staff was involved with Instructional Practices Inventory (IPI). The Inventory consists of assigned teachers visiting every classroom and rating student engagement based on the following inventory:

6. Student Active Engaged Learning

5. Student Learning Conversations

4. Teacher-Led Instruction

3. Student Work with Teacher Engaged

2. Student Work with Teacher not Engaged

1. Complete Disengagement

Our goal as a staff is to be at a 3, 4, 5 or 6. The data that is collected throughout the day on student engagement is then compiled into an overall summary sheet. This data is reviewed during PLC meetings and staff meetings to help us to reflect on our practices to make sure we are doing all we can to promote learning environments rich with sound teaching instruction and a high level of student and teacher engagement. These sentence stems are used as we reflect on our practices: 3-Things Worth Remembering, 2-Ideas I can use in my work and 1-Point to Ponder. We want to make sure we are doing all we can to make sure our students are receiving the best.

Tomorrow is an exciting day for MSE! Doug Powers, Superintendent of the Maize District along with Board of Education members from around the state will be visiting MSE to see the Leader In Me initiative in action. Students have been assigned to lead the entire visit with greeters , tour guides and speakers sharing about the Leader In Me. The students at MSE are a wonderful group and we look forward to this special event where we can showcase our great school, MSE!

Tyler Ewert

Principal, Maize South Elementary

MSE is fortunate to have Coach Ryan Sloth, author of four children's books, visiting us on Wednesday, December 18.  He'll be giving  presentations to each grade, plus attending our 'tailgate party' for lunch.   One student from each class will be joining Coach Sloth for a lunch of charcoaled hamburgers and hotdogs.  Next week students will be able to earn a toe token by participating in the Sammy Sloth Shuffle at lunch recess.  See the above flyer for details, and click here for a book order form.  Coach Sloth will autograph the books when he arrives.

MSE Art Gallery:  2013-2014

Happy Holidays! Throughout the first half of our school year, we've collected many art pieces from our very talented Maize South Elementary students! Our pieces of art work come from student projects completed in the MSE classrooms. When a student's art work is selected for the MSE Art Gallery they receive a certificate of recognition for their contribution. A special thanks to our great MSE teachers, as well as our Picture Person volunteers, as they inspire our students wonderful artistic abilities.

Please take a moment to browse through our online art gallery that can be found on the USD 266 website under the Maize South Elementary tab. We'll be adding more fantastic works of art from our great MSE artists very soon. Thanks to all the students for their hard work and effort!

Leader in Me at MSE

The following are the key principles of habit number one, be proactive: I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.

The second grade hallway at MSE is filled with proactive leaders. Please click on the pictures to enjoy a sampling of the proactive people at MSE!

"Cleaning without being told," is how Jenna is proactive.
Paige says, "I turn in my homework on time.  I read instead of doing nothing."

Parent Volunteer Needed for Author Visit!

We are in need of a parent or parents to volunteer to grill hamburgers and hotdogs for a special lunch students will be sharing with our visiting author on Wednesday, December 18th.  We will supply the hamburgers and hotdogs ahead of time, and are in need of volunteers to pick up the hamburgers and hotdogs, grill them and bring them back to MSE ready for our lunch at 11:45.  If you would be willing to help us with this special occasion, please let me know!  Thank you!

Skyward Health Information

It is the responsibility of the parent to update medical information and contact numbers in Skyward Family Access during enrollment and throughout the school year. Teachers, coaches and other school staff rely on Skyward for important health information like asthma, seizures, diabetes, and food allergies. In addition to updating Skyward, the parent/guardian must also personally communicate this information to the school nurse who will educate and train the appropriate staff.   If parents and/or student have questions regarding school guidelines and policies in keeping students safe and healthy at school, please contact the school nurse.

Volunteer Background Check
Volunteers play an important and valuable role in the Maize School District.  Students, teachers, staff, parents and the community benefit from the work of individuals who freely share their talents and resources.  The Maize Board of Education adopted a policy which requires background checks on volunteers who work in the elementary schools on a regular basis.

Individuals who plan to volunteer may start the background check process by going to the Maize South Elementary website and clicking on the 'Volunteer Background Check Application'.  Applicants can request a copy of the check when it is completed.  If you completed a background check last year, you will still need to complete the application this school year as well.  Background checks are conducted on an annual basis.  If you have any questions about the background check process, contact Tyler Ewert at 316-462-8300 or tewert@usd266.com .

Dress Code
USD 266 recognizes that the apparel of the student is primarily the responsibility of the parent.  However, the school will insist upon attire that is conducive to the learning environment.  The guidelines listed below are designed to prevent distractions in order to provide an atmosphere that is conducive to learning.

The parent and student are responsible for ensuring that the student is in compliance with all aspects of the policy during the time the student is at school or participating in school-related activities.  Failure by the student to correct dress code violations may result in disciplinary action.  Building administrators are the final authority as to whether clothing is or is not in compliance with dress code policy.

The guidelines for appropriate attire are:

  1. Pants, capris, shorts and skirts must be worn properly and not sag.
  2. Skirt or short length must extend to the fingertips.
  3. Shirts should be modest and appropriate for school.  Straps must cover undergarments and midriff.  No halter tops are allowed.
  4. Shoes must be worn at all times.
  5. Hats are not to be worn except on special days as approved by the administration.
  6. Any item that advocates or advertises tobacco, alcoholic beverages, drugs, illegal substances, violence, racist organizations/symbols, gangs, obscenities, or nudity are not allowed.

Sedgwick County Announces New Website for School Nurses

Dear Parent,

The Sedgwick County Health Department announces a School Illness Reporting website for all Sedgwick County school nurses. This new website is helpful to both schools and the health department. It provides data that may enable a faster response to stop the spread of illness. Nurses use the website to track their school's illness trends; the health department uses the data to track disease trends in the county.

On the new website, nurses submit numbers of absences and symptoms and create graphs showing school absences and trends over time. The data submitted on the website is total numbers of students and staff who are sick. No individual names, ages or classroom information is submitted.

You received this letter because your school nurse has decided to voluntarily report absences and symptoms using the School Illness Reporting website. In order to accurately monitor illness in Sedgwick County schools, we would like participating schools to tally the symptoms of students and staff who are ill. Knowing symptoms of ill students provides a more accurate picture of what illnesses are going around in a school. For example last year, symptom information was helpful when whooping cough and norovirus (vomiting and nausea symptoms) occurred in schools.

To obtain symptom information, school administrative assistants will ask for your child's symptoms when he or she is called in sick. This information helps the Sedgwick County Health Department track illnesses in the community and will make the school and the community healthier by stopping the spread of illnesses faster.

Thank you for supporting your school nurse and the health of your children.

Sincerely,

Your school nurse

Students will be transported home as soon as school is dismissed.  Please plan accordingly for supervision of students who will arrive home earlier on Wednesdays.
Picking Up & Dropping Off Students at MSES
School begins at 8:30 a.m. and we dismiss at 3:40 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  Students should arrive at school at 8:20 a.m. and should be picked up at 3:40 p.m.  Every Wednesday school will dismiss at 3:05 p.m. and students must be picked up at that time.  We do not provide supervision for students before 8:10 a.m. or after 3:40 p.m. (3:05 p.m. on Wednesdays).

We want all of our students, staff and family to be safe at all times at Maize South Elementary.  If you are picking up or dropping off your child at MSES, please follow these guidelines.

  1. Please enter from the southeast entrance of the parking lot and exit from the southwest.
  2. Please pull up to the farthest possible drop off or pick up point.
  3. Students should exit and enter from the passenger side of the car directly to the sidewalk.
  4. Students should be ready to exit the vehicle quickly.
  5. Stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
  6. Please do not block the crosswalk with your vehicle.
  7. There should only be one lane of traffic in the loading zone.
  8. When waiting to pick up, if vehicles in front of you have left, please carefully move your vehicle up in the line to allow more vehicles to get in the line.
  9. For safety reasons, we don't want any children walking through the parking lot or school crossing unattended.
  10. If you are parking your car, please exit your vehicle and walk across to the front of the building and pick up your child from the sidewalk area.  Keep your child with you in the crosswalk and all the way to your vehicle.  Students must be escorted by you when using the crosswalk.  Students will not be allowed to use the crosswalk by themselves.
  11. Students must walk their bikes on the sidewalk in front of the school.
  12. Please remember to drive slow and watch for children who might be using the crosswalk.  We do have students who walk or ride their bicycles to school.
  13. No pets are allowed at MSES.
Please remember the use of cell phones by students while at school is not allowed.  You will find the policy stated in the 2013-14 District Handbook.
Notification by Parents
For your child's safety, please send a signed note if there will be a change of plans on how your child will be getting home after school.  Unless the child has a signed note by the parents, your child will be expected to ride the bus if that is his/her normal way of transportation.

If a parent wishes to pick up his/her child after school, the office MUST be notified before 3:15 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  The office MUST be notified before     2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.  If the office is NOT notified before these deadlines, the student will be expected to follow normal procedures.

It is always best to make arrangements before the student comes to school.  Students are not allowed to call home for a note.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
