A Note from the Principal |
Maize South Elementary School is very excited to be welcoming kindergarten students beginning next school year. The pre-enrollment meeting for kindergarten parents will be tonight at MHS at 7 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to give parents information regarding our kindergarten programs and also the process involved in enrollment. The fee based all day kindergarten program and the half day program will be explained. Details will also be given for the online pre-enrollment process. All the information regarding enrollment will be available on the district website. This will include the PowerPoint shown at the meeting as well as required procedures.
The enrollment date for all kindergarten parents will be Friday, April 12, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Maize Central Elementary, 304 W. Central in Maize. Parents will register their preference for all day or half day kindergarten at that time. They will also show verification for living in the district and pay a deposit to reserve a spot in all day kindergarten if applicable. The week of April 22 a letter will be mailed notifying students of their building placement.
Finally on Tuesday, May 7 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., we will host the Kindergarten Connection for students who are placed in our building. This will be a joyous occasion as we will welcome our newest students to our school for the first time. On this evening parents will receive important information about their kindergarteners' first school year. Your incoming kindergartener will participate in teacher-guided activities and even take a short ride on a school bus! This is a special time for our kindergarten students so we ask you to please keep any siblings at home for the evening.
The Kansas Reading Assessments are completed for MSE students! The results are just preliminary, but WOW these kids are bright. Many thanks to our amazing teachers for the hours they pour into teaching our students to read. Reading is arguably the most important skill elementary aged students learn and we are very proud of their state assessment results. The Kansas Math Assessments will be taken the second week after Spring Break, April 1-5. We ask students to again be well rested and be certain to have a good breakfast on these very important days.
Thank you for all the support you give our MSE staff. We are very proud of the relationship our school has established with our parent community. Working together we do great things!

MSE Asst. Principal

Volunteers Needed!!
|
We are in need of some volunteer help! This would be working on math and reading skills with a 2nd grade girl and possibly a 3rd grade girl. The times we need to fill are:
Monday 10:00 - 11:00 and 12:10 - 12:40
Tuesday 10:00 - 11:00 and 12:10 - 12:40
Wednesday 10:00 - 11:00 and 12:10 - 12:40
Thursday 12:10 - 12:40
All 12:10 - 12:40 times would be helping with Math
All 10:00 - 11:00 times are helping with Reading
If you are interested in helping with any of these times, please let me know.
Thank you!
Eric

Notification By Parents |
For your child's safety, please send a signed note if there will be a change of plans on how your child will be getting home after school. Unless the child has a signed note by the parents, your child will be expected to ride the bus if that is his/her normal way of transportation.
If a parent wishes to pick up his/her child after school, the office MUST be notified before 3:15 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The office MUST be notified before 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. If the office is NOT notified before these deadlines, the student will be expected to follow normal procedures.
It is always best to make arrangements before the student comes to school. Students are not allowed to call home for a note.
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Every Wednesday....Early Dismissal for ALL Students |
MSE students will be dismissed at 3:05 p.m. each Wednesday in order for teachers to have time to meet in their Professional Learning Communities (PLC's). During PLC time, teachers participate in discussing curriculum, instructional strategies, data review, state standards and more.
Students will be transported home as soon as school is dismissed. Please plan accordingly for supervision of students who will arrive home earlier on Wednesdays.

Picking Up & Dropping Off Students at MSE |
School begins at 8:30 a.m. and we dismiss at 3:40 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Students should arrive at school at 8:20 a.m. and should be picked up at 3:40 p.m. Every Wednesday school will dismiss at 3:05 p.m. and students must be picked up at that time. We do not provide supervision for students before 8:10 a.m. or after 3:40 p.m. (3:05 p.m. on Wednesdays).
We want all of our students, staff and family to be safe at all times at Maize South Elementary. If you are picking up or dropping off your child at MSE, please follow these guidelines.
- Please enter from the southeast entrance of the parking lot and exit from the southwest.
- Please pull up to the farthest possible drop off or pick up point.
- Students should exit and enter from the passenger side of the car directly to the sidewalk.
- Students should be ready to exit the vehicle quickly.
- Stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
- Please do not block the crosswalk with your vehicle.
- There should only be one lane of traffic in the loading zone.
- When waiting to pick up, if vehicles in front of you have left, please carefully move your vehicle up in the line to allow more vehicles to get in the line.
- For safety reasons, we don't want any children walking through the parking lot or school crossing unattended.
- If you are parking your car, please exit your vehicle and walk across to the front of the building and pick up your child from the sidewalk area. Keep your child with you in the crosswalk and all the way to your vehicle. Students must be escorted by you when using the crosswalk. Students will not be allowed to use the crosswalk by themselves.
- Students must walk their bikes on the sidewalk in front of the school.
- Please remember to drive slow and watch for children who might be using the crosswalk. We do have students who walk or ride their bicycles to school.
- No pets are allowed at MSE.
- Please remember the use of cell phones by students while at school is not allowed. You will find the policy stated in the 2012-13 District Handbook.

Volunteer Background Check |
Volunteers play an important and valuable role in the Maize School District. Students, teachers, staff, parents and the community benefit from the work of individuals who freely share their talents and resources. The Maize Board of Education adopted a policy which requires background checks on volunteers who work in the elementary schools on a regular basis.
Individuals who plan to volunteer may start the background check process by going to the Maize South Elementary website and clicking on the 'Volunteer Background Check Application'. Applicants can request a copy of the check when it is completed. If you completed a background check last year, you will still need to complete the application this school year as well. Background checks are conducted on an annual basis. If you have any questions about the background check process, contact Tyler Ewert at 316-462-8300 or tewert@usd266.com
|
Homework Procedures |
When your child is absent from school and you wish to pick up homework, you must request it by 10:00 a.m. All assignments/homework and necessary textbooks will be available in the office after 2:00 p.m. Thank you.
