May Memorial Day Celebrations |
Casualty of War is never an easy topic.
Emotions range through grief to anger and leaves us asking why. The loss of loved ones and images of endless heroism and timeless camradery come to mind. Our military, the united front that protects us all is a formidable foe to our enemy. They are
our brothers and sisters, our fathers, cousins, mothers and our honored designation for homage on Monday, May 26th, when we reflect on our brave warriors while celebrating Memorial Day.
Always remember their sacrifice holds true that
freedom is never free.
The Armed Forces are an American tradition for strength and courage. It can offer multi faceted and phenominal opportunities for travel, free education, hands on training and pride that goes along with a job well done for serving your country. There is a great future in the Armed Forces. Even a chance to become something greater than ourselves boast the promises in defending this Country, our land of Liberty.
General George S. Patton, Jr. said,
"If I do my full duty, the rest will take care of itself."
Let's do our full duty in recognizing our Military. The Internet is full of links to organizations that can help out. https://operationshoebox.com/ Dedicate your computer screen with patriotic wallpapers, free!

National Drug Turn-in Event Saturday
PRESS RELEASE #: 14-061
"Law enforcement agencies throughout Sarasota County will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) national event to "take back" and properly dispose of prescription medication on Saturday, April 26, from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has permanent drop boxes at the Criminal Justice Center, 2071 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota, which is open 24-hours a day; and the south county office, 4531 State Road 776, Venice, where the hours are 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Sarasota Police Department, the Venice Police Department and North Port Police Department also have permanent drop boxes in each of their lobbies and are participating in Saturday's event. Medication turn-in is
always anonymous.
Prescription and over-the-counter solid dosage medication such as tablets and capsules are accepted. While boxes at each location are available to the public year-round, the agencies participate in the national turn-in initiative to publicize the permanent option for
proper disposal.
Drug turn-in events address a vital public safety and public health issue. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets. In addition, proper disposal of medication is safer for the environment, which is timely in recognition of Earth Day."

The 9th grade had the pleasure and wonderful opportunity to have Mr. Guy Yovan from the Home Shopping Network (HSN) visit us! He's one of the television hosts on HSN.
He talked to us about career choices
and gave some great advice! He hooked
the kids with his stories of job interviews
and past employment as a television talk
show host in New York. Mr. Yovan
emphasized that persistence, determination might sound cliché, but you must at least try something more than once to
gain the experience that you may need for your future, whether it be interviews, try-outs
or internships. He also gave us some excellent presenting strategies and tips that the kids
loved and will hopefully use in their career presentations at the end of the year!

Sexting
A Sarasota County Schools Alert
|
A moment spent 'sexting' can affect many lives for years. "Sexting," or the sending or posting of nude or partially nude
images of minors, is not just a bad idea.
It's a crime.
Many teenagers report that they have
sent a sexually suggestive image or message, and a growing number are being prosecuted under child pornography laws, even if the "child" in the photo or message is a
young adult.
A student who takes a nude or partially nude picture of himself or herself and sends it to a friend may be charged with the production
and/or distribution of child pornography. If the receiver forwards it to another student who does not delete it, there are now three people who could be charged with a crime.
In addition to criminal prosecution, sexting may lead to humiliation, bullying and other forms of harassment. Adults who prey
on children may find the image and target
its subject.
Because images can quickly be sent to and easily viewed by millions of people around the world, a sudden decision to do something
"funny" or impulsive may seriously jeopardize a young person's academic and job opportunities.
The Sarasota County Schools Student & Family Handbook, Section 300.3, Technology Use, describes the following "inappropriate
and/or illegal uses of technology": Accessing or distributing offensive, inflammatory, pornographic or obscene images, language or
materials...on school district-owned technology or on any other electronic device brought to school."
Violating this rule can lead to suspension or expulsion from school and may have other far-reaching and long-lasting consequences.
"We take sexting very seriously at the school district," said Executive Director of High Schools Steve Cantees. He added this advice
for students: "Think before you use your cell phone for something that may hurt you or others...and that you may regret for years to come."

Roses, jewels to toes is,
a thunder to asunder,
love for one another.
In the gift of wisdom they said,
thinking from the back of my head,
no longer will I be misled.
A cockatoo softly sounding,
a tune through and through,
the still a thrill 'till morning.
A dawn break dayed winds
meet with accolades,
trees boast the promise of marmalade.
We are not self, but wonderfully made.
Deep to water's edge a protective hedge,
the waterloo, a sip or two
enjoying the bayou.
Water lilies relaxing in fragrant moonbeams,
drunk from the algeed pond.
From the depths of centeredness I rest.
Surmount the contours of the mind,
soundly, tightly never to untwine.

It is 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014, and a group of eager, hungry, and sleepy students gather around breakfast waiting to be able to download the problem that will mark the beginning of the 2014 Moody Mega Math Scholarship Competition. Helen Liu, Conner Weber, Jordan Stephens, Tyler Sherknus, and Jorge Carrasco, all students at Suncoast Polytechnical High School have taken on this 14 hour, marathon mathematics experience. The team will be given a problem to solve. The will have to analyze and research the problem, come up with possible causations and solutions, and demonstrate and support their findings and recommendations using mathematical supported models, in a well written, and clearly communicated written thesis. The S.P.H.S. Team worked hard all day, and their hard work was rewarded with a successful submission at 8:57 p.m. Congratulations to this hardworking and committed group of young people.
About the M3 Challenge
The M3 Challenge spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool, as a viable and exciting profession, and as a vital contributor to advances in an increasingly technical society. Scholarship prizes total $125,000. The Challenge is entirely Internet-based and there are no registration or participation fees. Each high school may enter up to two teams of three to five junior and/or senior students. No exceptions will be made to allow underclassmen. Home schooled and cyberschool students may also participate. Students choose which day they wish to work on Challenge weekend and have 14 hours (7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time) to solve an open-ended, applied math-modeling problem focused on a real-world issue. Teams can work from any location they choose and can use any free and publicly available resources, but they may not discuss any aspect of the problem with, or seek help from, their coach or anyone other than their teammates via any medium. See Official Rules and Guidelines for complete details.
Panels of Ph.D.-level applied mathematicians serve as judges in three rounds of judging. Coaches and teams are notified in April of the judging results. Teams selected for the top six prizes are required to present their papers at the confirmation (third) judging round to determine final rank-order of those papers.
The top six prize-winning teams receive scholarship awards ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, which are divided equally among team members and paid directly to the colleges or universities at which the winning students enroll. Semi-finalist and honorable mention winners (more than 50 awards) receive team prizes of $1,500 and $1,000, respectively.

ACT 1
"The whole musical is set in the Villa
Caprice where Maisie, the girls (Dulcie, Nancy,
Fay), Hortense (the maid), and Mme Dubonnet
live at Mme Dubonnet's School for Young
Ladies. Act I begins when Hortense orders
a costume for "a Miss Polly Browne" and
Maisie and the other girls (Dulcie, Nancy,
and Fay) sing the ironic "Perfect Young
Ladies" with Hortense. Polly arrives and tells
everyone about her made-up boy friend who
is "motoring down from Paris" to meet her
for the upcoming carnival ball, and sings about
"The Boy Friend". Later, Bobby surprises Maisie,
and they dance to "Won't You Charleston
With Me?" Polly's widowed father, Percy,
then arrives at the school to discover that
the headmistress, Mme Dubonnet, is an old
flame of his. They sing "Fancy Forgetting"
to rekindle the spark. Polly, though a
millionaire's daughter, feels left out because
she is the only one of her friends who does
not have a boyfriend and she needs a partner
for the fancy dress ball. The errand boy,
Tony, arrives to deliver her Pierrette
costume and they are immediately
attracted to each other, and sing "I Could
Be Happy With You."
Our play is scheduled for the Conference
Center and will be performed on Friday,
We have rented a stage, lights and
microphones. SCTI has supported us by
assisting in the cost of renting of the stage!

Testimonial
I never thought I would ever hear
these words come out of my Son's mouth,
"I can't wait for school next year!" I am
very pleased to report that my teenager
is ecstatic about his Sophomore year
schedule. And I agree, Engineering,
History, Robotics, Spanish, we like all of
his courses. This school ranks, literally,
Gold Star awards and student achievements galore! If I had a choice to do high school
over again, I would have not wasted
four years on just passing the time. I would have excelled with the opportunities doing relevant, specialized career oriented training
in certifications that are honestly
applicable for the real world.
During this time, I have witnessed the
tremendous development of my son.
How can we express our gratitude?
By giving it all we've got. We enjoy
volunteering at the school and giving
back to the community.
The people here are exceptional and
work hard to accommodate the needs
of everyone. This is high school to the max,
maximum goal oriented, for maximum
great results. We are happily looking
forward to a bright future with the skills
learned while at Suncoast Polytechnical
High School.
Sincerely and Happily Yours,
Joan
