PTSA SUPPORTS 2013 - 2014 CCSD BUDGET |
At the May 1, 2013 CHSN PTSA meeting, the membership voted to support the 2013 - 2014 CCSD School Budget. We encourage all of our members to vote YES on May 21, 2013!
This year the school district focused on funding safety/security needs for our buildings. The budget adopted by the CCSD Board of Education includes several safety/security items for CHSN. These include exterior stairs from the Annex parking lot to the track & athletic fields; additional card readers/cameras; buzzer and intercom systems; lighting at entrance/exit to turf field; and upgraded Wi-Fi for our campus.
Our Superintendent, Dr. Morton, will be presenting the budget at PTA meetings around the district. We were unable to host a presentation at North due to scheduling conflicts. However, the CHSS PTSA has generously invited all members of the North community to their presentation. It will be held on 5/16 @ 8:30 pm in the South Auditorium.
The CCSD Annual Budget Vote will be held at the following locations:
Clarkstown North High School
Congers Elementary
Link Elementary
West Nyack Elementary

CHSN Snags Top Honors on US News & World Report's Annual HS Ranking
|
Clarkstown North High School received top honors from U.S. News and World Reports annual ranking of the nation's 21,000 public high schools. Clarkstown North was the only Rockland County High School to receive such an honor. According to U.S. News and World Report, the rankings were based on the criteria that great high schools must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college bound; great high schools must be able to measure academic outcomes to show that it is successfully educating its students; and great high schools produce the best college-level achievment for the highest percentages of its students. Clarkstown North was namd a Silver Medal School.
Our principal, Harry Leonardatos, believes that this achievement is noteworthy because students challenge themselves to take college level, advanced placement, and International Baccalaureate courses. Additionally, he states that "Teachers are to be credited for nurturing students to do well in challenging settings and for encouraging students to persist amongst adversity." Congratulations to Mr. Leonardatos and the administrative and teaching staff at Clarkstown High School North. We are very proud of you and our students!

STD Awareness Workshop Well Attended
|
On Wednesday, May 1st, over 30 parents and students gathered in the CHSN library to listen to an important panel presentation from the Rockland County Department of Health promoting STD Awareness among the Clarkstown community. This CHSN PTSA sponsored event was free and open to high school and middle school parents and students (accompanied by a parent) as well as local health professionals. Over 65 million people in the US have a chronic, incurable sexually transmitted disease and, in Rockland County, the numbers of young people being seen at the Health Department for STD's, particularly Chlamydia, has increased at an alarming rate in children as young as 12 years old. In fact, rates have increased in EVERY ROCKLAND COUNTY ZIP CODE and these increases are notably higher than the state average. Community awareness is vital to help put a stop to this dangerous trend. Special thanks to PTSA representative and CHSN parent, Rondi Loganzo, for coordinating this event. Topics presented by the Health Department that evening included: "Sexually Transmitted Infections: Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask" by Marissa Broadley, BSN, MSED, RN Public Health Specialist, STD and Partner Services; "The Rise of Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Teens" by Dr. Anil Vaidian, MD, MPH, Director of TB and Communicable Diseases; and "STI's and Prevention" by Maria Isabel Souto, Coordinator of TB and Communicable Disease. Presentations were followed by a Q & A and the distribution of additional materials on the identification, treatment and prevention of STI's as well as the types of free services, including screenings, provided by the Rockland Department of Health. Your PTSA Dollars at Work

PTSA Supports CHSN Library The CHSN PTSA recently donated $250 to our library, continuing our effort to provide balanced financial support that will impact the maximum number of North students. These funds will be used to purchase books and DVDs requested by students and staff. Approximately 500 North students visit our library each day utilizing its numerous and varied services. It is a valuable resource for all of our students, one the PTSA is committed to supporting!
PTSA Funds CHSN Science Magazine CHAOS CHAOS Science Magazine existed at Clarkstown North for several years, and was awarded several prestigious publication awards such as the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Award. Unfortunately, due to recent budget cuts, CHAOS was forced to halt publication in 2011. However, the PTSA understands the importance of reviving CHAOS as a standing science publication at North and has donated $275 to subsidize its publication. CHAOS exposes high school students to the experience of being published in a scholarly journal, but also functions as a testament to the research and effort North students put into their science classes. The CHSN PTSA is proud to help fund such an important endeavor!
