CHRISTIAN FORMATION

We will be discussing two books, An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor and The Rebirthing of God by John Phillip Newell.  The books are available at The Book Bin Reading these books is not required to join the class.  We all learn from each other.

LENTEN LABYRINTH

Come make a Lenten pilgrimage at St. Paul's!  Walking a labyrinth is an active way to pray as we seek to grow closer to God.  St. Paul's Youth will be setting up the labyrinth in the gym and it will be available 9:00 a.m. until noon on Friday and all day Sunday during Lent.  It will be available for the entire day on Good Friday.  There will be a printed guide on hand but it's not complicated.  It's not a maze.  There is only one path to the center and then back out again.  Walk, breathe, pray and may you find peace and closeness to God as you go.

LENTEN CARBON FASTING TIP

New LED light bulbs save a lot of electricity, which reduces carbon emissions. An LED needs only 6-8 watts to produce as much light as an old 60 watt incandescent bulb. (An equivalent compact fluorescent bulb burns about 15 watts.) Though they are pricey, the new LEDs offer other advantages: LEDs last over 40 times as long as incandescents, and at least 6 times the life of CFBs. LEDS contain no toxic mercury unlike CFBs, which are hard to dispose of. Both incandescents and CFLs are sensitive to very cold temperatures and humidity; LEDs are not. Incandescents and CFBs are more fragile and subject to breaking by impact. With LEDs becoming available in more sizes and styles, and with their prices dropping, they are a good environmental choice.

The March meeting for St. Clare's Guild will be Tuesday, March 3rd, 1:00 p.m. in the library. Our guest speaker will be from Simonka House, a shelter for women. All women of St. Paul's are invited to attend.

ART & ARCHITECTURE

The Art and Architecture Committee is pleased to have on exhibit

in the library the work of well known Oregon artist Marilyn Higginson.  Marilyn grew up in Salem and her parents, Guy and Hazel Higginson , were long time parishioners of St.Paul's.

Marilyn lives outside of Sheridan in a house she designed and built with the help of her father. She is also a graphic artist, sculptor, and ceramist - the closest person to a "Renaissance Woman" one can know.

Her work is represented byThe Mary Lou Zeek Gallery in Salem.

MARCH EVENSONG CONCERT

The University of Oregon Gospel Choir will perform at St. Paul's on March 1st. This all-student group, under the direction of Andiel Brown, is a functioning ensemble in the School of Music at the University of Oregon and will perform new and traditional forms of gospel music. Under Brown's direction, the UO Top Gospel Singers made world history in March 2013 by becoming the first gospel act ever to make a public performance tour of The People's Republic of China. They held 15 performances throughout China, including a special joint concert with the #1 Chinese choral choir, The Qingdao Teachers Choir, at the Qingdao Grand Theater. The St. Paul's Chamber Singers will sing the service of Evensong at 4:00 p.m. The concert follows immediately thereafter.
