JHS's Kristi McGowen named Joplin Schools' Teacher of the Year
This afternoon, staff and students at the JHS 11-12 Campus surprised Business Teacher Kristi McGowen with the announcement that she had been named Joplin Schools' Teacher of the Year. Kristi has been a teacher at Joplin Schools since 1988. She has taught various courses throughout her 25-year career including Introduction to Business, Computer Application, Business Law, and Business Leadership Technology. She currently serves as the JHS Business Department Chair and the Future Business Leaders of America Co-Adviser. She was a Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Golden Apple nominee in 1997 and 1998 and earned the Golden Apple Award in 2011. Congratulations Kristi!
To be eligible for Joplin Schools' Teacher of the Year Award, candidates must have taught full time for three years in the district and plan to teach in the district next year. They must be active in the community and be a current or past recipient of an honor or award such as the Golden Apple Award.

Joplin Schools Board of Education names new president and vice president
During the April 17 Joplin Schools Board of Education meeting, the board elected Jeff Flowers as the new president and Michael D. Landis as the new vice president. Jeff Flowers has served on the board since 2008. Michael D. Landis has served on the board since 2001.

Joplin High School Theatre Department to perform Footloose: The Musical
Enjoy a high energy, enthusiastic show full of dancing and the best 1980s anthem rock Thursday, May 9, through Sunday, May 12, when the Joplin High School Theatre Department presents Footloose: The Musical at the JHS 9-10 Campus Auditorium, 310 W. 8th St.
With a powerhouse score including Let's Hear It For the Boy, Almost Paradise, Holding Out for a Hero and, of course, the title track Footloose, the musical celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people while guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind. "This show is packed with high-spirited dancing and a score full of the music that defined the '80s," notes Sarah Brim, director. "It is simply a fun night at the theater, and we all need that. With a talented cast and crew of over 50 students, this musical is going to be totally awesome!"
The show starts at 7:00 pm Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and at 2:00 pm on Sunday. Tickets will be available at the door 30 minutes prior to curtain time. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

| event, representatives from Bright Futures Joplin recognized this year's Volunteer of the Year, Barry Sanborn, and this year's School Partner of the Year, Saint Paul's United Methodist Church.
Bright Futures Joplin relies on hundreds of volunteers to help fulfill its goal of meeting children's basic needs so that they can focus on education and success. These volunteers donate their time and their talent in a variety of ways including mentoring students, filling backpacks with food for the weekend for food-insecure students, making deliveries, even assembling furniture. In the last year, Bright Futures Joplin has been served by more than 120 school partners and 600 volunteers.

Bright Futures Joplin works within the Joplin School District to connect student needs with existing community resources. The Bright Futures model brings together businesses, human service agencies, faith-based organizations, and parent groups and partners them with schools in a way that helps them to quickly and efficiently meet students' basic needs - often within 24 hours.
