FTC to host annual Student Showcase and Career Fair

On Thursday, March 7, students at Franklin Technology Center will have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills for parents, teachers, local business owners, and incoming FTC students during the annual Student Showcase and Career Fair. The event will be held at FTC, 420 S. Grand, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Area businesses, colleges, and universities will have booths at the event where students and visitors can explore different career opportunities. The public is invited to attend this free event.

Doerr named finalist for National Merit Scholarship Program

| High school senior Danielle Doerr was recently named a finalist in the the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. There are approximately 15,000 academically talented high school seniors who will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,400 National Merit Scholarships that will be offered this spring.
Doerr is currently attending Missouri Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Computing in Maryville. Doerr attended Joplin High School her freshman and sophomore years. The Missouri Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Computing is an early-entrance-to-college, two-year residential school located on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. Students attend the Missouri Academy for two years, replacing the junior and senior years of traditional high school. While at the Missouri Academy, students are enrolled in a curriculum consisting of all college coursework taught by professors of Northwest Missouri State University. Upon successful completion, students earn an Associates of Science degree as well as a high school diploma. Doerr will receive her high school diploma from Joplin High School.

| was recently named one of four finalists for the American Association of School Administrators' Superintendent of the Year award. Joplin Schools' Board of Education will host a reception to recognize Dr. Huff for this prestigious honor on Monday, March 4, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm at Joplin Schools Administration Building, 3901 E. 32nd St. The public is invited to this come and go event. Refreshments will be served. Dr. Huff was recognized as one of four finalist at the annual AASA National Conference on Education on Feb. 21 for his work tackling lackluster student performance and graduation rates and low levels of community engagement in the school system. Through the Bright Futures initiative at Joplin Schools, the district has established 280 partnerships with businesses, faith-based organizations, human service agencies, and parent groups to help meet student needs and allow students and teachers to focus on academic achievement and graduation. The program has become a model for communities across Missouri and now serves nearly 50,000 children. This year's winner, Dr. Mark A. Edwards, superintendent of Moorsville, North Carolina Graded School District, was also announced at the conference.

| Superintendent Dr. C. J. Huff, and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Angie Besendorfer, along with several community members, stopped by Joplin's Northpark Mall to read to children as part of Read Across America Day. The event, sponsored by Garfield's Restaurant, Mercy, and Vintage Stock, included story time, crafts and activities, and an opportunity to meet the Cat in the Hat.
The National Education Association's Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2 - Dr. Seuss's birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books.
