A Word From Our President
In honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Carson Health has gone pink! You will find our website has temporarily changed to pink, as well as this issue of our newsletter. Breast Cancer affects one in every eight women during their life.
This week, the Carson Foundation will be hosting the Pink Ribbon Affair. The event will be held from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, October 10 at St. Mary's Hall in Carson City. This is a wonderful event that I welcome the entire community to attend. Admission is free, there will be music from the Flat River Big Band, a 16-piece music ensemble, great food to sample and a silent auction. Some of the items up for auction include: a pink Tupperware set, pink Legos, a pink bicycle, jewelry, concert tickets, a private air plane ride, and the opportunity to bid on one of two vacations to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico! Proceeds will benefit local breast cancer and survivorship programs. Please join me as we honor survivors and loved ones that we have lost by raising awareness for a very worthy cause.
The Carson Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to enhancing health and wellness resources in Montcalm, Gratiot, Ionia and Clintion counties. If you are interested in volunteering for an event or participating on a planning committee, please contact the Carson Foundation at 989-584-3971 ext. 101 or complete the online volunteer form.

 Knowledge is Power
As women we know just being a woman puts us at risk of breast cancer. It is important we empower ourselves and know the risk factors associated with breast cancer. In recognition of October as National Breast Cancer awareness month, below are three references.
1. Know your risk factors. Some risk factors cannot be changed, such as your age, genetic, race/ethnicity, family history, abnormal breast biopsies or age of your first period, all of which are factors that contribute to breast cancer.
However, there are many you can change, such having a child, age of first pregnancy, pregnancy and breast-feeding, use of postmenopausal hormone therapy, alcohol, obesity, physical activity.
2. Talk with your doctor about taking a risk assessment test.
3. Follow your doctor's recommendations for early breast cancer detection. Be sure to have yearly mammograms beginning at age 40. If you are under 40 and have family history discuss with your doctor when to begin screenings.
Above all, help to reduce your risk with yearly health screenings, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol intake. Early detection and improved treatments are making it possible for women to survive breast cancer every day.

4. You can help reduce your risk for breast cancer with regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol intake.

 Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
Just one of the many women's services offered at Carson Health are stereotactic breast biopsies. This is a minimally invasive procedure to remove tissue samples from the breast. The procedure last approximately 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia. Afterward, the patient is able to go home with "light duty instructions" This is a state-of-the-art service Carson Health is happy to provide for our community. If you would like to learn more about stereotactic breast biopsy, click here. |
