Dear Greetings!,

Now that Summer is in full swing and race weekend is fast approaching, it is that imperative time in a runner's regimen where mental and physical training must be in full effect. As you train, we are working diligently to make the 4th annual Miles with the Giant event the biggest one yet for the Thunder Bay!

Online registration is open!  Register before August 1st to get the best pricing and don't forget to help out one of our Run for a Reason Charities with a donation or by raising pledges towards their important cause.

200+ volunteers are needed in order to make Miles with the Giant a success! For those of you not racing, rally up your friends and family and register to volunteer at the "Want to Help?" section of the website or email volunteer@thunderbaymarathon.com

Until next time....keep on running!

Not-for-Profit Organizations- Get Involved!
The Miles with the Giant will donate funds to any Not-for-Profit organization or charity who can provide a minimum of ten, 18+ volunteers to act as road marshals on race day. We want to work in partnership with organizations throughout the city to improve the event for Thunder Bay while supporting the projects these organizations are implementing for the community.

We encourage dressing up in your uniforms, t-shirts, painting your face, bringing your banner and having fun while promoting your own organization! It is great exposure for your organization and a quick and exciting way to make some extra funds for your own fundraising initiatives.

Students! Entertainers!  We need you!
The Miles with the Giant race weekend provides many great ways for local high school students to get involved in this exciting running event.

Need volunteer hours towards a school credit?
Help out on race weekend as a volunteer for set-up and take down, at runner registration, to provide direction along the race course, or at runner storage/lost & found.

Want to run the event?
Register to run individually or enter a school team of 5 people in the marathon-relay.  School teams will compete for coveted bragging rights and a trophy to display in your school's trophy case.

Musicians, Dancers & Cheerleaders:
We need entertainers to add some pizzazz along the race course and at the start/finish line.  Buskers, bands, cheerleaders and dance troops are welcome to strut your stuff for our runners and spectators.

Runner Profile: Kim Karioja
By Marianne Bortolin

Kim Karioja is a Thunder Bay native who is currently working on her doctorate in Organizational Leadership while working at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health as a knowledge exchange consultant. Kim started her studies in Business Administration at the University of Ottawa but finished the degree at Lakehead University. After graduation, Kim moved to Edmonton to work in retail management with Suzy Shier. Although it would be great to win a race, Kim concentrates on using her sense of fashion to put together coordinated race day gear. However, the vibrant orange Mizuno Wave Inspires she currently runs in are proving to be a fashion challenge!

Kim ran to cross train during her years of competitive figure skating and then after she hung up the blades, she continued for the fitness benefits. It wasn't until a colleague indicated that she couldn't be considered a "real" runner until she completed a marathon that Kim got serious about racing. Grandma's marathon was her first attempt at 26.2 miles and almost her last. She didn't know how to train for the distance and the last 7 miles were painful. The great characteristic about long distance runners is that they have short term memories. Within a few days, Kim had registered for Twin Cities marathon and over the next two months added more long runs into her training. Flying up Summit Avenue on the final stretch of Twin Cities and feeling great totally sold Kim on the marathon.

With some road racing experience behind her, fellow distance runner Paul Fayrick challenged her to complete Trail Mix ultra in Bloomington, MN. What he didn't tell her was that the course had some challenges and halfway into the race, Kim was pulling her shoes out of the mud. Kim's best ultra memories are of the former Edmund Fitzgerald 100Km. Even with a two hour head start, elites like Sue Kainulainen easily sped by her at the 70 Km point near Two Harbors. After 23 years of running she has completed over 75 marathons in North America, Sweden, Finland, and France.

A torn cartledge in her knee that required surgery has slowed Kim's racing times but not her passion for running. In addition to this year's local marathon, she finished Grandma's in June and has registered for Twin Cities and Santa Barbara in the Fall. Kim thinks that Miles With the Giant has a great future. The organizing committee has a vision of becoming a fixture on the race circuit and each year improvements have been made to the event based on participants' feedback.

Supporter Profile: Fort William Rotary Satellite Club

Miles with the Giant would not be such an accomplishment without the support of the community! We are so pleased that the Fort William Rotary Satellite Club has once again graciously volunteered to assist with a water station on race day. We recognize and appreciate the impact that their work has made on Thunder Bay and around the world. Keep it up and be proud!

The Fort William Rotary Club is "a small group of ordinary people doing extraordinary things." They pride themselves on being a group of ordinary individuals from all walks of life who come together as a club to do things that they would not have been able to do on their own.

The Fort William Rotary Club was the highest individual donor to the Salvation Army's Emergency Relief Fund following the flooding that devastated our city in 2012. As well as being a top-level donor to the Regional Health Sciences Foundation for years. They support many other worthwhile organizations including the George Jeffrey Children's Foundation and Shelter House.

Internationally, the club has built water wells in India, refurbished a school in Sierra Leone, and contributed to the worldwide eradication of Polio.

The Satellite Club was launched in 2011 in response to feedback that younger Rotarians required flexibility in their Rotary club membership. The pilot's purpose is to research alternatives and options to club operations and the overall impact on membership trends, effectiveness, and success within the four elements of an effective club.

The Fort William Rotary Club submitted a proposal to have a Satellite Club as part of their Club. The Satellite Club meets separately on Monday evenings and uses a less formal approach to meetings and focuses its attention on hands-on projects to community groups and its own projects, both locally and internationally. The Satellite Club also assists the main Fort William Rotary Club with some of their projects.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Rotary, please visit their website: http://www.fwrotary.ca

Thank you for your continued support. Please help us spread the word by sharing this newsletter with your friends and family.

Sincerely,
