Greetings!

We are deeply saddened by the recent tragedy at the Boston Marathon.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were affected by this violence.  We are very thankful that no runners from Northwestern Ontario were hurt.  We will be working with Thunder Bay Police to review our safety procedures to ensure the safety of our runners and spectators.

Online registration is open!  Register before May 31st to get the best pricing and don't forget to help out one of our Run for a Reason Charities with a donation or by raising pledges towards their important cause.

We have expanded our advertising and are now promoting our event to readers of the Down the Backstretch Minnesota runners blog.  Check it out.

Miles with the Giant and the City of Thunder Bay are proud recipients of the Chamber of Commerce 2013 Strategic Partnership Award.  The award is presented in recognition of organizations who have successfully engaged in collaboration to create a new initiative or enhance business offerings.  Our thanks to the Chamber for this honour and for recognizing the importance of partnership and collaboration.

Until next time....keep on running!

Great Lakes Marathon Series

The Thunder Bay Marathon-Miles with the Giant is proud to be part of a new race series that has been created for marathoners to add to their list of running feats. The Great Lakes Marathon Series is a collaboration of 25 marathons in the U.S. and Canada that take place along North America's five Great Lakes.

The group has partnered with the Alliance for the Great Lakes - a four-star rated independent citizens organization devoted to the Great Lakes' ecosystem and economies - to raise awareness of conservation and restoration efforts.

By partnering with the Alliance for the Great Lakes, the series' goal is to invite the running world to enjoy the unique beauty of the individual races, while simultaneously raising awareness and funds needed to protect all five of the Great Lakes.

Participants will receive awards at various benchmarks throughout the series along with a grand prize after completion of all 25 races, regardless of how many years needed to complete the entire marathon tour. Registration for the Great Lakes Marathon Series itself is available at www.greatlakesmarathonseries.com/register/ and is free to all those interested.

Runners will be required to pay each individual marathon entry fee in order to participate, and signing up for the Great Lakes Marathon Series does not guarantee entry into any race. Also, only participation in races in 2013 and future years will be recognized as part of the Great Lakes Marathon Series.

To take the tour and for links to the websites of the 25 individual races, visit www.greatlakesmarathonseries.com

Fundraising Opportunity for Sports & Community Groups

Our 26.2 mile race course requires hundreds of volunteers to assist with road marshaling duties.

We are reaching out to sports teams and community groups to help us meet our volunteer needs on race day.  So grab your team mates and colleagues - team wear and mascots encouraged - and help us man barricades as you cheer on our runners along the route.  In return, we'll make a donation towards your fundraising activities.

For more information on this great win-win opportunity, contact Cindy Orr, Volunteer Coordinator: volunteer@thunderbaymarathon.com
