Social Work Month

March is National Social Work Month and I would like to take the opportunity to recognize all of the hard work and dedication shown by all the staff of Athens County Children Services. We take this opportunity to reflect, as a child welfare agency, on what we do and why we do it.

From our front line workers to our foster parents to our maintenance staff, we all play a critical role in protecting children, strengthening families, and securing futures.

The theme for National Social Work Month 2013 is weaving resilience and advocacy. Our workers help mend the fabric of frayed lives, regardless of what caused the damage. They do so with a profound respect for human dignity and with the belief that things can get better.

Our work in child welfare is inspired by the belief that all children have a birthright to grow up free from abuse and neglect. It is this belief that keeps our staff focused, despite the day-to-day demands of our field. Our staff works tirelessly on acting as agents of change for the children and families we serve.

So, let us take a moment to recognize and celebrate our staff and the social work profession. Thank you, sincerely, for working for change that makes a difference in the lives of our children and families.

Wear Blue 2013
The best way to prevent abuse and neglect in our community is to raise awareness. We want to engage you as our partner in this effort. Together, we can show a united front in preventing abuse and neglect in Athens County. On Wednesday April 10, residents of Athens County will "Wear Blue" to demonstrate their commitment to the safety of children in this county. What was previously "Wear Blue To Work Day" has expanded and will now include everyone in our community!

To participate, we ask that you communicate to your group to wear blue on Wednesday, April 10. We also ask that you take a photo of your staff that we can share on our Facebook page. Photos should be sent to Sherri Oliver at olives@odjfs.state.oh.us on Wear Blue Day, so they can be posted to our Facebook page in a timely manner. If you are on Facebook and haven't already, please "Like" Athens County Children Services and share our Wear Blue Day event with your friends and colleagues.

Thank you for committing to wear blue and making a difference in the life of a child!

Thanks, Riley!
If you follow us on Facebook or read the Athens Messenger, you may already be familiar with the good work of a young lady named Riley McCune. Riley just turned 9 years old, and in lieu of birthday presents, she requested that her friends and family give her new pairs of shoes that could be donated to the children served by ACCS. Word spread quickly, and Riley was able to collect over 160 pairs of shoes from family, friends, and strangers! This wonderful donation has made such a positive impact on children in our county, and we are grateful to know Riley. If we all try to follow her example, we will be better for it!

The Princess Ball
Thanks to the women of Delta Zeta Sorority and all of the wonderful sponsors of the first ever Friends of Children Services Princess Ball. It was a magical day for kids in Athens County, and we can't wait for the next one!
