Greetings!

While the staff at CYC are preparing for their first Spring Gala this coming Sunday, I reflect on how my time spent volunteering with this organization has not only given youth in the area a wonderful variety of opportunities to succeed, it has also expanded my perceptions of what today's youth are experiencing at school, home, and with their peers. Being a mentor to a young high school student through CYC has taught me that I can learn valuable lessons from anyone in the community, no matter their age or ability! Throughout our relationship, my mentee and I have learned about different cultures, new forms of art, new foods, read books, all by exploring the countless opportunities Des Moines has to offer. I only hope my mentee has learned as much from me as I have from her. I am forever grateful to CYC for giving me the opportunity to become more involved in my community!

Mentoring Advantage Program (MAP)
Mentoring has a number of proven benefits including improving student school attendance and performance. A supportive mentor can mean the difference between struggle and success. Just one hour a week can change a life, and there are many area programs where residents can get involved.

Community Youth Concepts (CYC), your neighborhood non-profit, has one such certified mentoring program. CYC's Mentoring Advantage Program (MAP) matches middle and high school students with mentors in the career field students are interested in. Matches spend 4 hours a month together, or about an hour a week, for a minimum of one year, hanging out, enjoying shared interests, and helping the youth figure out how to reach their future dreams (graduate high school, get into college, find a job they love, etc). Scheduling time together is flexible, based on the volunteer mentor and mentee's schedules.

Currently, CYC is searching for mentors in the following areas:
  • Female who loves sports
  • Female with career involving basketball or who just loves to play
  • Female with career in cosmetology
  • Female interested in Manga Japanese Art
  • Female who works in or teaches music
  • Female with a career in fashion design
  • Female with experience in the Peace Corps or other international development work
  • Female chef, photographer, or singer
  • Male with career related to mechanics
  • Male with career in photography and/or writing
  • Male with a career in science or chef who likes sports and being active
For more information on becoming a mentor for our MAP program, contact Michelle at [email protected] or 515-243-4292.

Ways to Support CYC

In order to reach the 1200 youth we work with every year and the 600+ individuals who receive training from us annually, we rely heavily on volunteers, donations, and sponsorships.  This is more important than ever as we gear up to lead a community-wide service-learning initiative with six other area non-profits and two school districts.  This work will utilize AmeriCorps members to facilitate service-learning, impacting hundreds of youth and creating a cultural shift making service just something everyone does.

Here are three ways you can get involved to help us bring this to reality.

Birdies for Charity

Once again CYC will be participating in Birdies for Charity. You can give a
one-time donation or make a pledge to help us serve  youth.
Charities receive 100% of every donation collected marked for them, and receive a 25% bonus for reaching $1,500, or $1.50 in penny pledges. There are also bonus bucks available for the top 25 charities. Provided by Sammons Financial. You can donate online here!
