Wild Phlox Trail
Just Think Outside
...the place for creativity
Welcome

This year the change of the leaves from green to the colors of autumn was impacted by the heavy rains of early October.

In some locations the leaves only changed to dull yellows and browns.  In others the change was simply delayed.  The best two locations I found were Grayson Highlands in southwest Virginia and Bays Mountain in northeast Tennessee.

I hope you enjoy viewing these images as much as I did hiking over the trails to make them.

Take care,
Jeffrey

Autumn - the season for enjoying the fullness of life -- partaking of the harvest, sharing the harvest with others, and reinvesting and saving portions of the harvest for yet another season of growth.

Autumn Splendor

I drove two hours to photograph the fall colors in the Grayson Highlands area of southwest Virginia.  As I approached the mountains I could see large black storm clouds over the top of the mountain.

I thought that after a long drive I could be rained out.  As I drove toward the top of the mountain I could see the storm was further to the east and made a wonderful backdrop to the fall colors.

A bonus of that afternoon storm was that when I was photographing on Wilburn Ridge this rainbow of colors appeared.  The Appalachian Trail runs just below the ridge.

A magnificent grove of old trees found in Grayson Highland.

I made the image of this grove of Poplar trees on Bays Mountain.  I love the contrast between the trees and the background as well as a splash of autumn colors.

The fall colors were muted for weeks when suddenly the leaves near the lakeside on Bays Mountain "popped". I make most of my images in the morning but decided this day to photograph in the early evening light. The colors were stunning.
