Wild Phlox Trail
Just Think Outside
...the place for creativity
Welcome

This is my eighth summer photographing the Goats of Roan.

It started with Arlo whose image my wife said made her smile.

Every year since then I've been hiking the Appalachian Trail into the Roan Mountain Highlands to make a goat portrait or two.

And hopefully they make you smile too.

Take care,
Jeffrey

It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.

Al dente and Contentment too

The Goats of Roan do make me smile as well as bring me joy.

I look forward to photographing them each summer beside the Appalachian Trail where it runs along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina.  This year I had the opportunity to visit with them in the spring too. I got to see how their wool is shorn and also witness the antics of the twins that Pippi gave birth to over the winter.

And here are the 2015 additions to the Goats of Roan.

Al is snacking on Angelica which grows wild on the balds and is one the goat's favorite foods.

The special bond between mother and child and their contentment as they relax on a summer morning.

The Goats of Roan are a herd of Angora and Milk goats who graze on the Roan Mountain Highlands near the Appalachian Trail which runs along the Tennessee / North Carolina border.

The goats spend the winter in Shady Valley and the summer on the mountain balds at 5700'-5800' in elevation as part of the Baa-tany Goat Project.  The 10-year project began in 2008 in an attempt to restore the Grassy and Alder Balds using goats as an experimental management tool.
